What can you remember about this

man?

•This is Neil Armstrong

•He was born in 1930

•He was born in America

•He first trained to be a pilot

•He then became an astronaut

•He is famous for being the first man to walk on the moon

•He died in 2012 at the age of 82

This picture shows Armstrong with the

crew of his first mission into space. The mission was called Gemini 8.

Neil Armstrong became an astronaut in 1962. By this time, quite a few people had travelled into space but no one had landed on the moon.

Russia and the USA were racing against each other to see who could get a man on the moon first.

After a lot of work by a lot of different people, NASA was ready to send American astronauts on a mission to the moon. This mission was called

Apollo 11. Neil Armstrong was the mission’s commander. He was joined by Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

How do you think the astronauts would have been feeling as they set

off on their mission?

On 16th July 1969, Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins blasted off in their

rocket and headed for the moon.

On 20th July, the astronauts reached the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin got in a smaller spacecraft known as ‘The Eagle’. Michael

Collins stayed behind to take care of the bigger spacecraft.

‘The Eagle’

The astronauts were supposed to sleep for a few hours before they

stepped on the moon but they were so excited that they asked to leave

the ship early!

Neil Armstrong carefully got out of the Eagle and put one foot on the surface of the moon. As he stepped out, he said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap

for mankind.” This is now one of the most famous sentences in

history.

How do you think Armstrong might have felt at this moment?

Meanwhile, the rest of the world was watching the moon landing on their televisions. No one had

ever seen anything like this before.

How do you think this family might have been feeling as they watched a man walk on the moon

for the very first time?

When Christopher Columbus discovered America, he brought back lots of things that people in Europe had never seen

before, like pineapples, potatoes and turkeys.

Do you think Armstrong could have

brought back anything useful from the moon?

www.planbee.com

Armstrong and Aldrin brought back knowledge about the moon.

They collected rocks to take

back to earth for scientific

experiments.

They examined and photographed the

surface of the moon.

www.planbee.com

The main goal of the mission

had been to find out if man could land and walk on

the moon and make it home again safely.

The rocks and soil samples they

took back to Earth showed no

evidence that there was

anything living on the moon.

What did Armstrong and his crew discover?

Do you think they achieved their goal?

Even though they didn’t bring back new objects from the moon, a lot of the objects we have today we only have because of the technology

used for exploring space.

Did you know that all of these items were first invented so that astronauts could go

into space?

Have a look at the pictures of space on the next slides. How would you describe these pictures? How do

they make you feel?
