1 John 1:5-10

Intimacy with Jesus, part 5

1 John 5:5-6 - This is the message he has given us to announce to you: God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. 6So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth.

It isn’t possible to have a right relationship with God and not deal with

your sin.

Until your desire to be intimate with God

exceeds your fear of dealing with your sin you will never have the level of intimacy you long for.

Pray for this Desire

7But if we are living in the light of God’s

presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his son, cleanses us from every

sin.

Forgiveness & Cleansing are not the same.

Forgiveness

Freed from the penalty of sin by being justified by

God – this occurred at the Event of Holiness

Cleansing

Is the restoration of the Quality of your

relationship with God Process of Holiness

8If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling

ourselves and refusing to accept the truth.

To deny that sin is in you is self-deception.

Don’t allow the fear of confessing your sin

keep you from intimacy with God &

others.

9But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every

wrong.

1 John 2:1 - My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. NLT

If you don’t turn from your sin and turn to God you will perish. Luke 13:3,5

Confess Specific Sin

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 – Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.

10For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. NLT

1 John 3:4-10 – Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices law-lessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

7Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.

10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. ESV

FAITHFUL

God once and for all forgives individuals

who sincerely turn to Him for forgiveness .

JUST

Seen in the ongoing cleansing done by the

blood of Jesus,

FORGIVE

Forensic (legal) term – release from a debt

– Divine Pardon

10If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing

that his word has no place in our hearts. NLT

To have daily fellowship with God

and with others we need to confess our sins when they occur.

“To know God it is necessary that we be like God to some degree, for things wholly dissimilar cannot agree and beings wholly unlike can never have communion with each other.” A. W. Tozer, That Incredible Christian (p. 84)
