1.0 Introduction of Organization
1.1 Organization
I had chosen Durian FM Sdn Bhd for industrial training programme. Durian
FM Sdn Bhd is a company that offers Internet-based multimedia, advertising,

Durian FM Sdn Bhd operates a new station which is DurianAsean, an English
based Internet radio. Soon, Durian Fm Sdn Bhd will offer a Malay
language-based Internet radio name Durian Nusantara. However, the place I
done my industrial training programme is the Chinese language-based
Internet radio, Durian FM.

1.2 Background of the Organization
The use of the Internet is growing at a tremendous rate. Internet penetration
worldwide is very close to the one billion users mark. Nevertheless, during
the past ten years, the Internet has become a very important distribution
mechanism for audio and video streams and files. Online radio is a relatively
recent phenomenon. Audience statistics show that internet radio is
increasingly popular, especially among young people and users in offices.
Traditionally, audio programs have been available via dedicated terrestrial
networks broadcasting to radio receivers. Now, radio receivers are no longer
only dedicated hi-fi tuners or portable radios with whip aerials, but are now
assuming the shape of various multimedia-enabled computer devices. Radio
listeners no longer need to tune into the AM FM channel!
Durian FM is an idea of an online radio through the internet 24 hours a day
with live DJs and many sort of pre-recorded radio programs. This radio
station can be listened from any part of the world as long as they have an
internet connection. Durian FM plays a role to give out information on
political views, latest news and entertainment without censorship and never
been heard before on normal conventional radio stations. Our aim is to offer a
mixture of positive and uplifting discussions, chat and music, highlighting all
that is relevant to our local community. Our broadcasts are all streamed live
via its website and rapidly developing an online listener base in many states

I. Data Key In and Management
There are 2 task I do for data key in and management. Firstly, it’s the guest list key in.
I have to key in the name and the contact details of every guest that has attending our
‘Soaring Pegasus’ talk show. I have to categorize the information according to the
background of the guest, for example politician, professionals, peoples from NGO and
so on. Secondly, it’s the reference sources key in. I have to rearrange all the Chinese
old newspaper according to date, then cut out those important and highlighted
news, categorized all these according to the topic code provided, in the same time
label the date, page and the source of each clipping.
II. New Selections
Before the show starts at 8am, we have to browse through today newpaper, discuss
what news to review in the show later. We will circle the headline of the news we
chose.
III. Topic Description
Once the topic for coming show has confirmed, I have to do research on that topic
and write a draft of topic description with 150 -200 words. After my colleague checks
my draft, the description will publish in our official website, as a preview for the
coming show.
13
IV. Guest Invitation
I have to contact guest to our coming talk show based on the type of topic in the
coming show. The guest is either reject, on air via phone or Skype connection, or
come to our studio themselves. I have to create interview question and email to guest
that request for it.

The scale of valuation is 5 for excellent, 4 for good, 3 for intermediate, 2 for weak and
1 for very weak. Valuation has done by supervisor based on 2 categories, which is
characteristic of intern and performance of intern. For characteristic, I obtained 3 for
communication ability and get along with colleague ability, while 4 for working
discipline. For performance, I obtained 3 in working knowledge and creativity, while
5 for responsibility. Overall, I got 21 in total. The full mark in valuation is 30.
1.12 Problems/ Suggestion (Masalah /Cadangan)
I have face problem in accommodate with the task given at first. However, practice
makes perfect, task has no longer tough for me after I have master the skills needed.
However, I’m still want to suggest that students must prepare themselves well in term
of technical knowledge and soft skills needed before they go for practical training so
that they can learn new knowledge and gain experiences without any problems in
working environment.
15
2.0 Activities for Industrial Training
2.1 Unit
As I mentioned in part 1.7, Durian Fm is a small radio station with 6 staff and
an intern, hence I don’t have a fixed unit or department. I participated myself
in almost every job they do and gain knowledge from every different job I did.
2.2 Main Activity
I. Data Key In and Management
There are 2 task I do for data key in and management. Firstly, it’s the
guest list key in. I have to key in the name and the contact details of
every guest that has attending our ‘Soaring Pegasus’ talk show. Since
this task has been neglected for 2 years, I have to key in all the name
and contact details of guest that attend our show from June 2012 until
the recent one based on the daily program check list (Figure 4.1) or
the name card of the guest (Figure 4.2). This task is not an easy task, it
wasn’t merely key in all the details into Microsoft Excel sheet (Figure
4.3), I have to categorized the information according to the
background of the guest, for example politician, professionals, peoples
from NGO and so on. Secondly, it’s the reference sources key in. This
task also been neglected for years. In this task, I have to rearrange all
the Chinese old newspaper from year 2011 to recent according date
(Figure 4.4 and 4.5, then I have to cut out those important and
16
highlighted news, categorized all these according to the topic code
provided (Figure 4.6), for example code A is for politic issues, B for
social issues, C for education issue, D for race and religious while E
for environment issues. Below each alphabet, there are also a series of
number that narrowed and specific the issues, for example A08 for
corruption, B05 for youth, D02 for HUDUD and so on. Besides doing
categorization, I have to jot down the date, page and the source of
each clipping (Figure 4.7).
II. New Selections
The first job I did every day is news selection. Since ‘Soaring Pegasus’
news review show will be aired on 8am, so the first thing I did when I
reach office at 7.30am is select news (Figure 4.8) for the ‘Soaring
Pegasus’ news review show (8am – 9am). Although I’m not the DJ in
the show, I’m still joining them in this half hour to browse through
today newspaper and discuss which news to be review in the show.
III. Topic Description
For the second hour of ‘Soaring Pegasus’ (9am-10am), there will be
a talk show, guest will be invite for the show to narrate, discuss or
debate the hottest topics recently. But before that, I have to do
research on the topic there are going to be on show, then prepare a
150-200 words description for the topic (Figure 4.9). This description
will be post in our Facebook page as a preview for the talk show
17
(Figure 4.10).
IV. Guest Invitation
Politicians, government officers and NGO representative would be
invited to our ‘Soaring Pegasus’ talk show. It’s my job to contact
relevant guest to each topics. Some of the guest will reject our
invitation, some of the guest will choose to on air via phone or Skype
connection, some of the guest will come to our studio themselves
(Figure 4.11). Besides that, some of them want interview question to
decide whether want to be our guest or not. For this case, I have to
prepare interview questions and email to them before request them to
be our guest (Figure 4.12).
V. Audio Editing
Once we finish ‘Soaring Pegasus’ show at 10am, the next job we will
do is audio editing for ‘Soaring Pegasus’ show. The purpose we do
this is to make an audio link, so that the listener who missed our show
can easily access to the link to replay it from our website (Figure
4.13). . This audio editing task wasn’t that complicated, all I need to
do is remove the commercial and song from the recording show track
using Cool Edit Pro software (Figure 4.14).
18
VI. Web Poster/ Banner Creating
This is our daily job after too. We have to a poster/banner as a
preview for tomorrow talk show. The poster creating is simple; all I
need to do is insert a related background, the photo of guest and
details such as title of the topic, name of guest, job position of guest,
date and time of the show, using Adobe Photoshop (Figure 4.15).
VII. Indoor and Outdoor Photo Shooting
Whenever there is a guest come to our radio station, I have to take
photos for them and fellow DJs (Figure 4.16). Besides that, when we
have an outdoor duty, I will help in photo shooting too (Figure 4.17).
These photos are use as web publicity in our official website.
19
2.3 Problems and Challenges Facing
When I first came to Durian Fm, I felt very nervous because I do not have any
working experience in mass media field, being in the radio station working
environment is a totally new experience for me.
In data key in and management job, there are guest or organization
background that I didn’t know well, I have to find the information, mostly by
surfing internet to understand it well before I categorize it, this make me
doing my job very slow. But I learned a lot while finding information.
In topic description, there are several issues I don’t know, especially those
related with economic such as GST (Goods and Services tax), TPP
(Trans-Pacific Partnership) and so on. This makes me facing difficulties when
writing topic description. But I learned a lot during research, furthermore my
colleague willing to lend me books to study the topic I’m week, I gain lot
knowledge while writing topic description.
In audio editing and web poster/ banner creating, I was very weak at first
since I seldom use Adobe Photoshop and I never use Cool Edit Pro software
before. But practice make perfect. I can handle it after few times using.
2.4 Conclusion
As conclusion, the industrial training programme has brought me with a brand
new experience. I have study a lot in 2 months of industrial training programme
and have built my confidence to work in this field in the near future.
20
3.0 Conclusion
3.1 Lessons
Throughout my internship at Durian Fm, I learnt a lot of things including
technical skills and also soft skills that are needed for future undertaking. The
lessons I learnt include use of new software, importance of preparation,
importance of communication and importance of time management.
a. Use of New Software
During my internship, I have learnt how to use Cool Edit Pro software
to edit audio. I found that it is not very hard to master, plus it has more
function compare to the MP3 Cutter and Editor software I’m familiar
to before that. I also learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop too, although
it is hard at first since I seldom use it, after I use for few times, Adobe
Photoshop is no longer tough for me.
b. Importance of Preparation.
While participating in writing topic description, I found out early
preparation is very important. It happened to me where I realized I’m
facing difficulties in writing a topic description since I don’t have the
background knowledge of related topic. I write spontaneously during
my first topic description and I received negative comments from
colleagues. After experienced the first description, I gathered opinions
from my colleagues and do more research on the topic before I write
the description.
21
c. Importance of Communication.
During the industrial training, I realized the importance of
communication within colleagues. It’s a must for the new intern like
me so that all tasks can be completed smoothly. Without a proper
communications, conflicts might happen. Colleague may not
understand what the problem I met or I do not understand on the
explanation from my colleague. But luckily colleagues and staff in my
company are all nice and generous. I had a great time communicating
with them. Besides, I was encouraged to present my opinion and
suggestion to my colleagues regarding to the recent issues and news. It
turns out that things are working faster and better within our team.
Besides that, I learnt the importance of communication in guest
invitation too. When my first times giving a phone call to a datukships
politician, I didn’t realize I forgot to address him as Datuk. This can be
seems are disrespect for that politician. However, I have improved it
after that.
d. Importance of Time Management.
Working in mass media field is always a race with time, hence time
management is very important, especially when I do news description
and creating web poster/ banner. I must complete both of the tasks as
soon as possible so that web publicity can run smoothly. If I keep
procrastinate until the last minute, the publicity will not works
22
perfectly and we will lost a lot of listener. Besides that, audio editing
have to complete as fast as possible, otherwise our loyal listeners will
complain for the late of online replay.
3.2 Suggestion
In my humble opinion, industrial training is a must and very important course
for every undergraduate student, however 2 months industrial training period
for B.A. Mandarin student is too short. There are many knowledge and skills
that I haven’t learned yet due to short training period. We have to admit some
of the skills need longer time to learn, for example language skills in on air
show and produce a quality on air show. 2 months is too limited to fully
understand the operation of workplace.
Besides that, I realize the knowledge I learnt in classroom is not enough to
apply in workplace. I think university should increase more classes regarding
to general knowledge and solving workplace problems, instead of learning
only theory.
3.3 Conclusion
In conclusion, students must prepare themselves well in term of technical
knowledge and soft skills needed before they go for practical training so that
they can learn new knowledge and gain experiences without any problems in
working environment and communications in different people and ages.
