Monitor your child’s Internet access on line
Don’t let kids 2 and under play with computer stuff
Kids 3 to 5 start to understand stuff on the internet
Help kids 6 to 9 understand how to get on safe websites
Use a long, unique password to keep your child safe
If a criminal gets your password then get a different password and
call the police
Don’t communicate with strangers in person. Tell an adult if a
stranger contacts you.
Cyber Bullying Cyber bullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person
Here are just a few signs of cyber bullying
• Signs of emotional distress during or after using the internet
• Withdrawal from friends and activities
• Avoidance of school or group gatherings
• Slipping grades and “acting out” in anger at home
• Changes in mood, behavior, sleep, or appetite
How Parents Can Help
If you discover that your child is being cyber bullied, be sure to discuss how it feels. Offer assurance that it’s not your child’s fault. Talking to teachers or school administrators also may help.
Block The BULLY
Most devices have settings that allow you to electronically block emails, IMS , or text messages from specific people.
Limit Access To Technology
Keep the computer in a public place in the house (for example: no laptops in children’s bedrooms)
Limit the use of cell phones and games.
Social Networking
Children should be 13 years or older in order to have a Facebook account.
7.5 million kids younger than 13 are using Facebook, including more than 5 million who are 10 and under.
Facebook doesn’t allow kids under 13 because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. This was written in 1998 to protect kids from revealing information to be used for marketing purposes and to reduce their risk of being exploited.
