5/Higher education qualifications in FranceAn overview of the L.M.D. system (licence, master, doctorat degrees)
A brief introduction to the French higher education system
and its place within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA)
European grades or levels
The following degree courses correspond to three levels or grades that are recognized throughout
all member countries of the EHEA. For all courses, students must have successfully completed
the French Baccalaureate (the bac) or its equivalent qualification in the student’s home country.
Licence: A three-year course which is the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree
and comprises six semesters
Master: A two-year course which is the equivalent of a Master’s degree
and comprises four semesters (after the Licence)
Doctorat: A three-year course which is the equivalent of a PhD
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees (intermediate)
DEUG: A two-year undergraduate degree course
Maîtrise: A four-year postgraduate degree course
Advantages of the L.M.D. system:
A better comparison of equivalent qualifications throughout Europe
Students can study in other universities across France or in any EHEA member country
Better transparency of degrees on the job market
Students can choose their learning pathways according
to their study plans and their vocational needs
11International Students Guide / Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences -BREST
Course Units (TUs) and ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits
The course unit lies at the heart of the system and can combine several subjects and comprise
different teaching methods (lectures, classes, coursework, etc.). Each course unit has a
corresponding ECTS credit value that takes into account the workload required to achieve the course
unit. Every semester, course units totalling a maximum value of 30 credits can be obtained, or, in
other words, one validated semester is worth 30 credits. A specific number of ECTS credits must be
obtained for successful completion of a degree. For example:
Licence: 180 ECTS credits
Master: 120 additional ECTS credits. (For example, students must obtain 180 credits
from the Licence plus an additional 120 credits for the Master)
ECTS credits are recognized and used in all EU member countries.
Your studies within the French Higher Education System
In France, the academic year is divided into two semesters:
Semester 1 runs from September through to December and is followed by midterm examinations.
Semester 2 runs from mid-January to mid-April and is followed by final examinations.
You can select your options from the Licence and Master 1 courses and then confirm your choices to
the Registry.
In accordance with French law and international agreements aimed at promoting student mobility
(particularly between different European countries) a certain number of credits are accorded to
each course unit. These credits are accumulative and transferable and correspond to the work load
involved. One taught semester is worth 30 credits. Once you validate a course unit or a semester,
the corresponding credit values are permanently banked. The accumulated credits are transferable
between different study programmes and also between national and international institutions that
recognize ECTS credits.
