International Happiness Day Presentation
20th March 2018
A shift is occurring globally. People are realizing and acknowledging that progress or development ought to be about increasing human happiness and
wellbeing and not just growing the economy.
1. So what is Happiness?
Let’s engage in some myth busting first!• MYTH 1 - happiness is feeling good all the time • MYTH 2 - happiness is not experiencing negative feelings at
all• MYTH 3 - happiness is being rich or affording everything
you want• MYTH 4 - happiness is a final destination or end goal of life
1. So what is Happiness?
SOME FACTS!!!• Happy people also experience negative emotions.• Happy people’s general evaluation of life is that life is “good” despite
challenges.• Happy people also experience stress, trauma and have to overcome
challenges/difficulties in life.• Happy people don’t postpone their happiness to some far off future
date. They focus on working on being happy in the present.
DEFINING HAPPINESS!It is commonly defined by experts as a combination of how satisfied you are with your life (component 1) & how good you feel on a day to day basis (component 2). Experts who define happiness more holistically also include an additional component related to meaning & purpose (component 3) in life.
Happiness
Affective (Hedonic) component• More positive emotion• Less negative emotion
Cognitive component• Life satisfaction – overall
evaluation of one’s life as being good
To break it down, Happiness is:
Eudaimonic component• Meaning• Purpose
