1.0.2 Requirements Analysis
A hotel caters for a diverse range of people. Their cognitive abilities and knowledge of technology therefore are different. Considering this important factor in the overall design of the interface/device, it must be simple to navigate, easy to learn to use and fulfil it's tasks correctly and completely.
The Device must allow the user to navigate an interface and be capable of carrying out the following functions :
• Room environment controls (heating lighting, air conditioning, opening/closing windows)
• In-room entertainment (TV, music,…) • Room service (food, drinks, etc.) • PIN access to safe • Hotel information • Tourist information • (additional function(s) Room Service Device Help, FAQ, About
RSD)
The design has been refined in order to make the final design as simple yet as efficient as possible.

Firstly, the physical design :
The overall look has to be professional and dignified because it is a hotel. If it appeals to the guests then guests will use it. Furthermore, the colour has been chosen as blue to convey richness and calm, which blends in with the room layout. Similarly the shape of the device is that of a micro laptop. It looks like a natural object which does not distract the guests while in their room. It is wall mounted for the purpose of safety – no-one can steal the device and it will not get lost.
The device has 3 main buttons :
• Up / Down buttons• An Enter key
and 6 quick access keys :
• Lights• Air Conditioning• Windows• Temperature• Food / Drink• Home Button
The purpose of the quick keys is for the guest to quickly access more frequently used operations with ease : aid effectiveness.

Next, the Interface :
On starting up the device it will take the user to the home screen. Using the Up/Down buttons to scroll through the tab selection display and pressing Enter when the user is happy to proceed.
This method of scrolling tab selector aids efficiency as it does not clutter up the screen while trying to select an operation and perhaps choosing the wrong option.

Furthermore, the design of the interface and device :
They both must incorporate positive design aspects regarding the guest's metal abilities and age range. The potential guests staying in the hotel will have a diverse range of skills and knowledge when considering the advancement in technology and logical processes relating to computational problems. For instance, a younger person may have a reasonable understanding of computer systems and consistent design features such as the Home symbol on the goto home page button. However, an older person may find it a difficult task trying to find out how to navigate through the system and may get frustrated. Older people may have poorer eyesight which may lead to complications when trying to use the device. Strong structured visibility will contribute to a solution : hidden functions that are not in use should not clutter up the screen if not necessary – Tab selection display. Acknowledging these factors, the design of the device must contain clear, helpful and precise information. The Use of metaphors such as the plus and minus images symbolise greater or less sound : adjusting the volume. The overall size of the device must be big enough for older guests to interact with and also aesthetically pleasing – matching the room layout and colour scheme. Similarly, the interface itself must develop these qualities. No overload of information should be present on the screen at any time to avert confusion over each function. Helpful feedback is given after each user interaction using polite and non-threatening language to aid efficiency of the interface.

1.0.4 Function Examples
Environmental function – Heating
This function allows the guest to change the temperature of their room. A simple two step process : choosing the temperature and then confirming the selected temperature. Feedback is immediate which is helpful to the user to amend their decision without frustration.

Room Service Function – Food - Dinner
This function allows the guest to order dinner.Simple box check and a confirm allow the guest to order with ease.With only 3 steps the consistent method of iterating through each option is not complicated.
