Survey results

• RTP/RTL survey of randomized sample of 500 coaches across TN

• Response rate 19.6%

o 93% had completed concussion training

o 98% always remove an athlete from play or practice for suspected concussion

o 97% required athletes with suspected concussion to be cleared by a licensed health care provider before returning to play or practice.

o 99% said their athletes know to make the coach aware of any concussion symptoms they experience

o 88% said their organization always implements the “Gradual Return to Play Policy”

• A follow-up survey is planned.

• Results will be compared to assess change in concussion practices.

Safe Stars

Safe Stars is a collaboration between the Tennessee Department of Health and the

Program for Injury Prevention in Youth Sports at The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's

Hospital at Vanderbilt.

• The first safety rating system in the nation for Youth Sports Leagues

• Free and Voluntary to all youth leagues across Tennessee

• Can achieve Gold, Silver, or Bronze level

Safe Stars Partners

Abusive Head Trauma Prevention

• Contract with Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee

– Assessment of birthing hospitals regarding current AHT/SBS practices

– Face-to-Face AHT/SBS training to hospital staff (10 hospitals in 2018)

– Training designed to educate staff engage caregivers and provide AHT/SBS prevention

information
