Innovation Projects Meeting NSW eResearch Strategic Needs Chris Mendes, September 1st 2009

Version 3.0

Goals 1.  Create an overview of NSW eResearch strategic needs 2.  Create projects that are aligned with Australia’s &

NSW’s research priorities 3.  Create projects of significance to the NSW research

community 4.  Create projects which meet Intersect’s strategic goals:

a.  Address needs across research groups, disciplines and members b.  Develop re-usable technologies c.  Develop ‘package-able’ solutions which can become services in the

future

5.  Provide a fair and equitable distribution of project services to Intersect’s members

2

Overview

•  This process has been designed to meet the goals set out earlier

•  Gathering and prioritising projects is a fairly expensive exercise. We are trying to make this as efficient as possible

•  In summary, this process comprises: –  an on-going collection of potential projects for consideration

maintained in a short-list –  an annual selection of projects for execution –  a quarterly review of progress and possible re-prioritisation

•  Criteria and process will be public

3

Resourcing

•  Innovation projects can currently be resourced with approximately 4 EFTs. –  2 or 3 Developers –  HCI/UID, QA, Project Management

•  In kind contributions from participating stakeholders are welcome and encouraged.

2. Review

•  The Intersect Executive Team will review the ‘Needs Report’ and produce a list of possible candidate projects for further consideration

•  About 10 projects will be selected

7

3. Define Candidate Projects

•  Preliminary scoping will be carried out for all candidate projects

•  A short list and summary will be proposed to the Innovation Committee.

•  The work will be performed by Intersect’s eResearch Analysts and the project business analyst in close consultation with stakeholders

•  Data for the assessment steps will be gathered at this time

8

4. Assessment

•  The assessment process involves evaluating each project against key selection factors

•  Selection factors have been designed to meet the goals of the selection process (TBA).

•  Data for this stage will be collected by Intersect’s eResearch Analysts in close consultation with stakeholders

•  Priority will be suggested by the Intersect Executive

9

5. Review & Selection

•  The Innovation Committee will meet annually to review and prioritise candidate projects

•  They will then select 3-5 projects which are estimated to fit within the resourcing that Intersect has available for execution in the following year

•  At this time, other factors will be considered such as balancing of service levels to members

10

6. Quarterly Review

•  The Innovation Committee will meet quarterly to: •  Asses progress to date •  Review the situation for up-coming projects

•  Is the project still valid/needed? •  Have any of the key criteria changed? •  Has the project received funding through some other means?

•  If required, replacement projects may be selected from the candidate list.

•  As required, the Executive team may review the order of project execution based on the quarterly review.
