24,400 buses, including 4,500 at RATP
178 trolleybus in 3 networks (Limoges, Lyon, Saint-
Etienne)
87% of the fleet is owned by Urban Transport Authorities
Average age of bus fleet: 8.3 years (Province)
and 6.9 years (Ile-de-France)

European Standard (Euro):
43 % of the fleet is at Euro 4 or higher
Energy: 87.2 % of buses run on diesel
10 % on natural gas (GNC)
2.8 % with other energy sources (electricity,
Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Hybrid, ...)

Limoges: a local specificity since 1938…
• A recent decision to renew and develop the
trolleybus network for sustainable reasons
• The 5 trolleybus lines represent 50% of the
annual traffic.
• In March 2013, 4 new articulated trolleybus

Energy: test and deployment of hybrid vehicles
Diesel engines of low capacity and electric traction, with recuperation of braking energy and "start and stop" function (the heat engine goes off during the stop)Reducing fuel consumption (about 30%), CO2 and NOx emissionsFor less noise and more comfort for the passagers.

End 2012 and during 2013, two networks equipped:Bordeaux: 30 hybrides buses (8% of the fleet)

Lyon: test of 6 vehicles (Iveco, Man, Volvo) duringone year (2013-2014)• Testing the economic model and the balance
between higher acquisition costs and gains in consumption and maintenance costs (for example, functioning and wear of the battery)
• Pollutant emissions and comfort of the passengers, the drivers, the local residents
• Testing in real operating conditions and comparison with diesel buses on the same lines.

Paris and Ile-de-France : on December 11th, 2013, the STIF Council (Public Authority) decided the end of diesel buses. • All new tenders will be for hybrid vehicles
(electric or diesel) or CNG buses.• 9,000 buses concerned. The hole bus fleet will
be removed by 2025• 800-900 buses concerned in 2014 and 2015

• In January 2014, 48 hybrid buses will be in operation on 3 RATP lines.
• 3 experimentations will be launched:1.- rechargeable hybrid buses (Ellisup Project)2.- hydrogen vehicles3.- standard buses 100% electric.

ELLISUP (Electric bus with lithium batteries and super-capacities) • A project supported by ADEME funds in 2009• A prototype developed by Iveco Bus with
Michelin, EDF, RATP and CEA Grenoble,• Presented at Busworld Kortrijk in October 2013
and at the Rencontres Nationales du Transport Public Bordeaux in November 2013
• Testing on a RATP line during 2014

• An electric engine accommodated in 4 of the 8 wheels
• A gain of internal space: 10 to 20 % of additionalpassengers
• Autonomy for 8 to 10 km• Fast charging terminus station: the lithium battery
can be charged in 4 minutes

Comfort and accessibility In France, the February 11th, 2005, Act requires to ensure accessibility to all public places and the entire transport chain by 2015 90% of low-floor buses, more than 60 % of the fleet has at least one accessibility element (visual or audible announcement of stops, kneeling system, range of access and / or space for wheelchairs)All the bus lines in Paris are accessible to wheelchair users

Transport networks have specific requests regarding interior and location of seats.
• wider seats suitable for people of high body mass• floor without vibration• lighting varies according to the time of the day• spaces with different colors (for example., front
seats = blue, for disabled persons = red, for young persons in the back = yellow...)
• valuation of the customers welcome and ergonomics of the driver’s place

On-board equipmentEach network has special, non-standard requirements about the installation of on-board equipment :
• Ticketing• Direction indicator on front (girouette)• Videosurveillance with cameras inside and
outside• AVMS (advanced vehicle monitoring system)• Radiotelephony.

DesignThe external image of rolling stock is very important for Councils who want a custom network. In France, each network has a specific look for identification :
• Crealis Irisbus in Paris: cache-wheels, bottom of the windows and colored direction indicator front and side
• Neo Crealis Irisbus of Tzen Ile-de-France: rounded forms, sliding doors, large windows, CCTV and air conditioning
