The Certification Journey at Auburn
2002• Became an approved Microsoft Office Testing Center• Exams optional for initial teacher certification students
2006• The unthinkable• Exams required for all initial teacher certification students
2008-2013• Continuous Research – Pre and Post Survey
Our Role
• Promote Awareness Of Industry Certification To Students, Teachers, Administrators, Parents, And Community
• Advise Students• Develop Sequential Curriculum• Offer Program Minor • Communicate The Potential For Industry Certification To
Add Value To Student Marketability And Advancement In The Workplace
• Monitor Changes
Research
• In a study at Auburn in 2002, only 9.8% of Alabama Business Educators held any type of industry certification.
• In a study at Auburn in 2005, pre-service business educators who had taken certification exams agreed that industry certification offers many benefits, including increased confidence.– Teachers who have more confidence with computer skills can
concentrate on teaching the application of the software rather than just specific “click” skills.
– Respondents strongly agreed (M = 3.47, Scale 1-4) that business educators with industry certification should receive additional compensation.
Demand for Graduates
• Employers seek program graduates with industry certification
• Research Conducted at Auburn University:– 2012
• 96% of employers surveyed indicated they would like for their employees to take and pass industry certification exams (i.e. IC3, MOS)
• 91% of employers surveyed indicated that having industry certification will give applicants an advantage in the interview process
• 94% of employers surveyed indicated that having industry certification increases confidence in computer applications
