Nursing ‘informatics’ at Hull
• We don't do anything on 'pure' nursing informatics. The pre-reg nurses get some insight on electronic patient records (mainly from a day-to-day usage perspective) and I do something with them on telehealth in year 2, but that's about it.
What is informatics?
Informatics is the science of computer information systems. As an academic field it involves the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. The field considers the interaction humans and information alongside the construction of interfaces organisation, technology and system.

Informatics for nursing education
• Where do our students get information?
• Where do we get information?
Informatics for nursing education
• Where do our patients get information?
HON survey 2005
Informatics for nursing education

Students use:
Informatics for nursing education
• What do our students do with information?
Informatics for nursing education
• How do our students share information?
BUT…do you feel like this?
I just don’t get social media
Information overload
How do we teach our students about informatics?
Journal of Professional Nursing (2005)
We are not producing
• Programmers
• Systems analysts
• Computer scientists
• Information technologists
We are trying to produce
Nurses who are comfortable
• Looking for
• Finding
• Interpreting
….information
From informatics to infographics
Interactive infographics
Common data elements
Common data elements
• conceptually defined as variables that are operationalized and measured in identical ways across studies, enables comparison of data across studies in ways that would otherwise be impossible
Summary
• ‘Informatics’ is probably a piece of jargon
• Our students are natural users of information
• We should teach them as if we know that
• Our students are natural generators of information
• We should teach them to do that better
