Sguardi Sonori 2011:
INFINITE SPACES A great concert for astronaut and
orchestra
directed by Ennio Morricone with
Roberto Vittori and Paolo Nespoli
By FaticArt Association
Sandro Cecchi ESTEC 8.3.2011
Sguardi Sonori is a festival of contemporary art organized by
the nonprofit cultural association FaticArt which takes place in
Italy with artists from around the world since 2004. The sections of
the festival are: electronic music, soundart installation,
performance art, contemporary art (installations, video art,
painting, photography).
The event INFINITE SPACES will take place between April and
May 2011 is a concert conducted by Maestro Ennio Morricone,
which could take place from Rome or another place in the world in
conjunction with the International Space Station with the
participation as a soloist of the astronaut Roberto Vittori
(probably in April 2011 since the launch date of the ultimate Space
Shuttle mission STS-134 has been fixed on April 19th 2011) or
other Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, who is already on the ISS
and will remain there until May 16, 2011.
The project was selected by the Ministry of Public
Administration and Innovation for participation from July 24th to
August 7th 2010 at the Italian Pavilion at World Expo in Shanghai
for the exhibition “Italia degli Innovatori” (Innovators of Italy).
This concert could be broadcasted worldwide over the 5
continents (Dubai, Seoul, Assisi / Rome, Jerusalem, Dakar /
Johannesburg, Beijing / Shanghai, Sydney, New York, etc..) and it
will see the participation of the greatest artists in the world that will
give their contribution to what should be the most universal
CONCERT FOR PEACE ever made: a Woodstock of the third
millennium that will be broadcasted around the world via satellite
in High Definition 3D in theatres that are equipped with this
technology via Eutelsat- OpenSky.
The concert has already had a prologue INFINITE SPACES
Preview on July 20, 2009 in Rome at Piazza del Popolo on the
occasion of the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the
landing on the moon.
The video of the memorable execution occurred in the presence
of 100,000 people filled the square is visible on the Facebook

INFINITE SPACES: the project
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CONCERT LIVE FROM THE
SPACE STATION IN 2011
Date to be determined in accordance with a schedule of launches
to the ISS and with the workplan of the STS-134 mission and ISS
operations. Hopefully it will be done during the next mission of the
Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori and Paolo Nespoli by April-May
2011.
The project was designed by Sandro Cecchi and Carlo Fatigoni
and includes the participation of the Italian astronauts Roberto
Vittori and Paolo Nespoli and Ennio Morricone with whom we
work on a possible "score for astronaut and orchestra".
This can be done live with worldwide broadcasting in conjunction
with the International Space Station (ISS) with the participation of
some of the greatest artists in the world playing together the
astronauts aboard the ISS.
PARTICIPANTS
Some of the artists considered are: Bruce Springsteen, Bono,
Sting, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Lou Reed, Ravi Shankar,
Alva Noto, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Scanner, DJ Spooky, Vijay Iyer,
Alice Coltrane, Juan-Claude Risset, Franco Battiato,
Alessandro Cortini, Elio Martusciello, Phill Niblock, Richard
Devine, Neil Leonard, Lamonte Young, David Byrne, Ellen
Fullman.
The event should last from 2 to 3 hours depending on locations and
related artists. The live audio-video contact with the ISS last from 8
to 20 minutes, unless NASA makes available a permanent link to
the Space Station during the event.
During one of this audio-video contact will be performed "Concerto
for Astronaut and Orchestra" INFINITE SPACES by Ennio
Morricone.
Implementation of the score of the
"Concerto for Astronaut and
Orchestra" by the astronaut side
The astronaut will be connected with the control room of the
concert. The performance of the score by the astronaut will be
made by sending the appropriate
command (control data) of an OSC
(Open Sound Control) with his
hands movement that will modulate
propriately through the softwares
Density and Pulsaret the sounds of
the stars and the universe that are
preloaded on a Apple host computer
in the control room on ground.
The submission of monitoring data generated by the
astronaut from the ISS to the Earth with his movement implies
that the OSC protocol is present as a special application
written for the Ground Control Computer in the Control
Room.
The conductor gives the ON / OFF command to run the score to
the astronaut. The command may be given either in video, if the
astronaut has a chance to see the
conductor as well as ON / OFF
directly on the astronaut interface.
The sounds are mixed in real time
on ground with the music of the
orchestra and with any other sound
The nature of electronic sounds
generated by the astronaut will be of
two types:
1) real sound of space, concrete materials like “Cassini Listens to
Lightning at Saturn”, “Sounds of the Magnetosphere”, “Voyager
Termination Shock” and so on.
2) synthetic sound: microsound implementation of Pulsaret
Wavlet, Grainlet Granular Synthesis Technique, etc..
Software author: Density/Pulsaret DSP: Alessandro Petrolati

Pulsaret is a new interactive real-time
program for asynchronous/synchronous
prototypes granular synthesis. Pulsaret
implements a wide range of time-domain
varieties of granular synthesis:
glisson, grainlet, trainlet pulsar etc... Sound disintegration,
pulverizer, sampled envelope “convolution”, dynamic draw
envelope/shape, interpolation-transitions and Hyper Vectorials
pads they simplify the creation of incredible sound objects. All
parameters are controllable via MIDI learning/rescale and OSC
network. Matrix & LFO provide a powerfull way to connect one
parameter with a dependent parameter/s, implementing all
grainlets kind.
PULSARET FEATURES .eight granular sreams simultaleously
.envelope/windowing menage up to 16 pre-generated shape
(prototypes)
.envelope/windowing loading and menage up to 12 sound-files
(aiff,wav,mp3)
.dynamic envelope buffer load/save, normalize, trim, resize
length etc...
.main mixer 8 channels + 1 master, solo/mute and VST slots,
Master cascade~ filter
.multichannels I/O mapping
.quick-record export master channel and/or multichannel file
streams, progressive file autoname, select directory and re-
sampling/quantize out file
.snapshots (presets) memory: up to 100 for each stream and 10
for the main mixer and global snapshots
.simultaleously (streams and main) transition (interpolation)
between snapshots (in a given time)
.clients menage: include/esclude widgets from transitions
.four draw table for transitions curves
.micro-pad interpolating between four snapshots
-HV_pad (i.e. hyper vectorial pad), 9 snapshots pad (4 pad
near), and auto-explorer (spiral, dunk, reflects) engine
- MIDI/OSC input mapping: learn/manual, rescale range and
exponential curve
- MIDI/OSC output sync: enable/disable, continuously or mouse
up send
