The IDEAS framework is based on a methodology known as Inquiry-based learning. This methodology supports the idea that knowledge of our world is constructed out of a process of collective questioning and problem solving. The Brilliant IDEAS series identifies five clear stages for both teachers and pupils as they work through the content. Each stage represents a different opportunity for developing key thinking skills.
INVESTIGATE
The purpose of this stage is to construct new knowledge from existing knowledge, and to provide a context for the knowledge.
EXPLORE
This stage encourages pupils to push further into the contents and to connect ideas through HOTS activities. Pupils use skills such as hypothesizing, evaluating and contrasting ideas.
DISCOVER
This stage presents the main new contents pupils will be learning, and is accompanied by LOTS activities to check understanding.
SUMMARY
This stage offers an opportunity for pupils to check the knowledge they have acquired throughout the unit.
Final task
Each unit contains a Final task which is developed in various steps throughout the unit. These tasks encourage cooperative learning and foster creativity, as pupils are challenged to create something and then present it to the class.
APPLY
This stage brings together main curricular content and competences in a practical task.

Planning across subject areasThe Brilliant IDEAS series offers comprehensive cross-curricular planning to help teachers show pupils the connections between the concepts that they learn.
The tables on the following pages show the curricular contents of Primary Natural and Social Science and their links to Arts and Crafts and Music.
These tables can be used by teachers to plan cross-curricular activities in their own classroom or by teams of teachers to plan and coordinate lessons across different subject areas.
How to use the cross-curricular tablesThe different subject areas appear at the top of the tables, which are organised by level of Primary. On the left-hand side, the bulbs indicate the units.
As Arts and Crafts books are organised by terms, one term is equivalent to two units of the Science and Music books.
In the Science columns, a summary of the content of each unit appears. In the Arts and Crafts and Music columns, topics appear in either green or blue to indicate a link to Natural Science or Social Science respectively.
