Sessums News:

Autism Awareness Week at Sessums: Thank you students and staff for

participating last week in Autism Awareness. Our goal is for students and

staff to learn more about specific disabilities and grow in our knowledge

and understanding about Autism. Here is a brief timeline of laws created

to support exceptional students: In 1975, The Education for All Handi-

capped Children Act is passed, providing for free and appropriate public

education, individualized education plans, due process hearings, and edu-

cation in the least restrictive environment possible. In 1997, The Individu-

als with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) includes individuals with brain

injury and autism with procedural safeguards, early intervention, pre-

school services, and teacher training. Florida legislators enact Disability

History and Awareness Weeks, beginning in October 2008. April became

Autism Awareness Month. Most recently in 2008, The Higher Education

Opportunity Act expands eligibility for Pell Grants and other need-based

aid for students with intellectual disabilities to pursue postsecondary edu-

cation.
