Impacted Impasto, Evidence of the "Role Up" by Van

Gogh Robert Alexander Boyle

07 November 2016

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), The Night Cafe, 1889, Yale University Art Gallery

Headlines were made when an old friends book was mentioned in the New

York Post this past Sunday. Veteran journalist picked up where we left off

several years ago in the story of trying to ascertain ultimate authenticity of

the Met Annenberg van Gogh, "Wheat Fields with Cypresses." Not to go

into James Grundvig's book to much, his ultimate point is a truism about

the artist, if the examples are right, there has to be evidence of the rolled

up state when Vincent shipped his canvases back home to brother Theo in

Paris via narrow gauge late 1880's primitive French Railroads. In extreme

magnification, it is pretty obvious to see.
