Identifying 3-D Figures
Lesson 12 – 7
Vocabulary
• Three Dimensional (3 – D) Figure: Shapes that have a length, width, and depth/height
• Face – a flat surface on a 3-D figure.
• Edge – the segments formed by intersecting faces.
• Vertex (vertices) – corner of a figure• Lateral face – the sides of a 3-D figure
• Base – top or bottom shape of a 3-D figure. A base is also a face.
Vocabulary• Prism – has 2 bases, and lateral faces
made of rectangles.• Pyramid – has at least 3 lateral faces,
which are triangles, and only 1 base.• Cone – has 1 circular base, and 1 vertex• Cylinder – has 2 circular bases, and no
vertices• Sphere – has no faces, bases, edges, or
vertices. A solid figure that has the same distance to any point from the center.
Naming the Prism or Pyramid
Prisms & Pyramids have 2 names!!!!• Prism: identify the base (the shape
that can be stacked on each other to form the prism)
‘name of the base’ prism• Pyramid – identify the base (the
shape that is on the opposite side to the vertex)
‘name of the base’ pyramid
