Dear Glenwood Families,
February flew by in a flash and our focus on science made it even more fun. There were so many smil-
ing faces at our Wonder, Explore and Create Fair on February 21st , learning from each other and sharing
all of the things that we “wonder” about. I’d like to send a special thank you to Chairperson Molly Russell
and her Co-Chairperson Tammy Wanck for their “behind the scenes” work. Setting things up, printing
off certificates, organizing materials, and lining up judges takes work, and it is that type of work that
makes the actual night of the Fair so much fun for all. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I’d also like to recognize some of our Glenwood employees this month for the many years they’ve
spent working for our district. Please join me in congratulating the following staff members:
15 Years of Service
Kathleen Borgeson – First Grade Teacher
Sharyn Fine – Occupational Therapist
Jessica Mirtallo – Fourth Grade Teacher
Ingrid Peters – Food Service Worker
Vita Rice - Paraprofessional
25 Years of Service
Lori Cherevko – Second Grade Teacher
30 Years of Service
Roy Pooler – Head Custodian
This month, we have our Open House on Tuesday, March 19th and it’s also Music In Our Schools
Month. As part of the focus on music in education this month, we’ll have a Musical Interlude as part of
our Open House schedule again this year. From 7:00-7:15 PM, we are hoping you will drop in to the
cafeteria and listen to our third grade students play the songs they are learning on the recorder, and also
hear a song or two sung by our 4th and 5th grade chorus members. Mrs. Laramee and all of her music
students who perform that night would love to see you! Here’s the schedule for Open House this year:
6:30-7:00 Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade Classrooms/Catarella/Rivera Open
7:00-7:15 Musical Interlude
7:15-7:45 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Classrooms/Walter Open

One of the picture books we recently shared is called Going Places by Peter and Paul Reynolds,
which teaches about the importance of individuality and how we need to celebrate everyone’s
uniqueness! Students completed self-portraits to highlight their differences and they are
hanging outside Mrs. McSain’s door!
We have progressed nicely through
Module 4 and are only a couple of
weeks away from the completion.
Students have been learning how
to multiply fractions and then
convert them into decimals
numbers. Module 5 will have
students exploring Geometry.
Students in both classes have been working on learning
what engineers do and practicing the engineering
process with different projects. They know that the first
steps must be to plan and design and then be prepared
to improve that design for better functionality. We are
also spending time on a Black History Project.
Students continue reading Non-
Fiction in the Lucy Calkins
Argument unit, which involves
reading articles about a
controversial topic (such as
“should plastic bags be banned.”)
They are researching both sides
of the argument and debating -
from both the side they agree
with, and even the side they
don’t agree with!
In writing, students are weighing
in as to whether chocolate milk
should continue to be available in
schools, or if it is an unhealthy
choice that should no longer be
sold. Students have been
reading articles on the topic,
considering the perspective of
the writer, and using that
evidence in their writing to back
up their claim.
If you have
questions or
concerns please
don’t hesitate to
contact your
students teacher!

A Good Start
March is National Nutrition Month and March 4-8 is National School Breakfast Week. Break-fast is the most important meal of the day. It provides the nutrients and energy your child needs to concentrate in school. Research shows that kids who eat breakfast get better grades, pay attention better in class and behave better. Give your child a combination of protein (milk, eggs, cheese or meat) and carbohydrates (whole-grain cereal, whole-grain bread or fruit). The carbohydrates boost energy and help your child start their day and the protein keeps his/her body going strong until lunchtime. Here are some quick breakfast ideas:
Make instant oatmeal with low-fat milk or water. Toss in raisins or other dried fruits and nuts.
Layer low-fat yogurt with cereal and blueberries.
Top a waffle with low-fat yogurt and fruit.
Blend a breakfast smoothie with low-fat milk, yogurt and frozen fruit.
Spread a flour tortilla with peanut butter, add a banana and roll it up.
Add ham and cheese to a toasted whole-grain English muffin.
