Iconic images of the modern world

This PowerPoint presentation gives examples with which to model a

consideration of iconic images (1945-present).

This leads to the first assessment task:

A presentation on an iconic image of the modern world of your choice.

TASK: Students are to choose TWO images from the period (1945 to the present) to

present and comment on. One must be Australian in content; the other can be anything of

their choice. These images are to be pasted into a document with responses to the

following questions (below). Students will present ONE of these images to the class in

the third week of this unit, at which time the completed document will also be submitted.

CONTENT & CONTEXT:

What is this image of? When was it taken? Who took it?

Briefly explain the context.

CONTINUITY & CHANGE:

Why is this image iconic? What change or historic development does

the image express/show?

A cultural icon can be a symbol, logo, picture, name, face, person,

building or other image that is readily recognized and generally

represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a

wide cultural group.

A representation of an object or person, or that object or person may

come to be regarded as having a special status as particularly

representative of, or important to, or loved by, a particular group of

people, a place, or a period in history.

In the media, many well-known manifestations of popular culture have

been described as "iconic".
