Frequently cited concerns
There’s no standardization of terminology and naming so there’s
constant confusion about what the business users want and what they
got when it is delivered.
No understanding of relationships between data objects repeatedly delays
projects. We need more automation of discovery and design tasks to
accelerate delivery.
Our data modeling environment is completely distinct from our other software
design and development tools so it is hard to share design artifacts and stay
in synch.

Defining and Enforcing Standards
Increased Quality and Governance
■Naming– Words, acronyms, and patterns
■Meaning– Glossary
■Values– Domain values or ranges
–Transformation– Logical to physical – Physical to logical
■Privileges– Users, groups, roles
■Privacy– Sensitive attributes– Data masking rules
–Traceability– Auditability
“InfoSphere Data Architect helped us to semantically integrate all our critical data
sources and to design a business information model within two weeks. Previously, this
process would have taken more than two and one-half months.”
