The performance of an individual is inherently grounded in the social situation of their

performance. Ceci and Roazzi (1994)

Social Interaction Activates the Brain

• PET scans reveal the brain is more engaged during social interaction over content than during solo learning activities.

• From birth, brains naturally attend far more to people than to inanimate objects.

Kagan Cooperative Learning, 2009

Why Engagement?

• We ask our students to pay attention ALL the time.

• Students have to attempt to do this in an emotional and highly social environment.

Concept Map

Engagement

The primary purpose of engaging students or participants is to mentally prepare them for the learning ahead. The objectives are to actively bring participants into the moment, to reduce

the effect of any personal distractions, to reduce the anxiety of being in an unfamiliar setting, and

to focus their brains.

Talking Chips

What are some personal distractions that our ELLs have?

Cooperative Learning creates genuine social interactions, which in turn

generate positive emotions.

If you want them to hear it,you talk.

If you want them to learn it,they talk.

Sharon Bowman, 2005

Novelty vs. Predictability

These two elements have great influence on emotions and emotional states of students.

When my body is engaged….my mind is engaged.
