The debate was broadcas t on t h e T h i r d Programme, t h e u n -m i s t akeab l e v o i c e o f Derek Coomber coming over l oud and c l e a r , The unseen mot ion was t h a t ' T h i s House P r e f e r s a Knave t o a F o o l j and was l o s t by 99-206; t h i s audience v o t e was not a p a r t o f the c o n t e s t .

A ve ry s m a l l aud isnce o f under f i f t y was p r e sen t a t t h e U . L . U . debate on A f r i c a . I t was a g rea t p i t y t h a t t h e o t he r 99,8*£ o f t h e s tudent body f a i l e d t o f i n d a n y t h i n g o f i n t e r e s t i n a sub j e c t wh i ch i s o f g r ea t importance t o t h i s o o u n t r y . S u p r i s i n g l y , even the c o l ou r ed s tudents f a i l e d t o t u r n up I n f o r c e .

The arguments f o r and a g a i n s t wore w e l l p r e s e n t e d by Mr . Fennsr Broekway, M . P . seconded by a s tudent from t h e G o l d Coast and by M r . G . B . Craddoek M . P . seconded by a B r i t i s h s t u d e n t . The mot ion c a l l i n g on t h e Government t o announce t a r g e t da t e s f o r t h e hand ing over o f A f r i o a n government t o t h e n a t i v e p o p u l a t i o n was c a r r i e d by twenty-one vo t es t o f i v e w i t h n i n e a b s t e n t i o n s .

M r . Jack Howarth i n p ropos ing t h e t o a s t t o t h e a s s o c i a t ­

i o n , proved t o eve ryone ' s s a t i s f a c t i o n t h a t t h e d i s s o l u t i o n

o f I .C .W .A . was unnecessary .

S e v e r a l e n t e r t a i n i n g i n c i d e n t s from the e a r l y h i s t o r y o f

I . C . W . A . were remembered by t h e P r e s i d e n t , M i s s G r a t w i e k , i n

h e r r e p l y . She a l s o mentioned i n h e r speech t h e achievements

o f p r e s en t members, o f whose c o n t r i b u t i o n t o t h e academic;,

s o c i a l and a t h l e t i c a c t i v i t i e s o f t h e C o l l e g e was not i n c o n ­

s i d e r a b l e

The s t anda rd o f speeches was g e n e r a l l y c o n s i d e r e d t o be

h i g h and t h e i n f o r m a l dance a f t e rwards was enjoyed by eve ry -

G u i l d s ' h a v e dec ided not t o change t h e p a t t e r n o f t h e i r t i e s .

A t f i r s t s e v e r a l a l t e r n a t i v e schemes b e a r i n g s h i e l d des i gns

i n reds and b l ue s were cons ide r ed^ and l a t e r i t was suggested

th«[t t h e p r esen t i s s u e was u n s a t i s f a c t o r y on l y i n i t s exact

was adequate , but not n e a r l y enough support was g i v e n by any

gypsy v e i n by Dvorak s t a r t e d t h e show, but t h e main event was

t h e per formance o f a new group o f songs by Bernard S t e v ens ,

t h e composer b e i n g p r e s e n t . I n t h e s e t h e harmonic v o cabu l a r y

was perhaps r a t h e r l i m i t e d , b u t n e v e r t h e l e s s , t h e s p i r i t o f

Amateur d ramat i c s can be the sub j e c t o f c o n s i d e r a b l e

c o n t r o v e r s y . The o p i n i o n s i t r a i s e s v e r y from downr ight

condemnation t o moronic e f f u s i o n . To a c e r t a i n ex tent

b o t h v i e w p o i n t s a r e un d e r s t a n d a b l e ! a w e l l p roduced , w e l l

On Saturday March l s t , I . C . succeeded i n drawing t h e 'match a g a i n s t t h e Cambridge 2nd team on t h e l a s t h i t o f t h e l a s t f i g h t .

Owing t o de l ays i n t h e a r r i v a l o f v a r i o u s members o f t h e Cambridge team t h e match was fought i n the o rde r o f Epee , Sabre , F o i l , i n s t e a d o f t h e u s u a l F o i l , Epee , S a b r e . ( I t s h o u l d be e x p l a i n e d ' t h a t t h e F o i l and Sabre s t y l e s r e q u i r e c o n s i d e r ­a b l e a c t i v i t y and i t i s g e n e r a l l y the custom t o separa te them by t h e e o m p a r i t i v e l y r e s t f u l Epee . ) I . C . v e r s s l e w i n g e t t ­i n g t h e i r eye i n and were sound ly de feated i n t h e Spec 6-2 ( t h e r e b e i n g ene double l o s s ) . The Sabre was won 5 -4 , b u t i n s p i t e o f t h i s t h e chances o f making up any l o s t ground i n the F o i l seemed remote.

The C u t t h r o a t s had a v a r i e d and somewhat u n c o n v e n t i a l

f o i l s i d e - Lemante, f i g h t i n g w i t h an I t a l i a n f o i l and I t a l i a n

s t y l e - Maek lup , ene r g e t i c and P o l i s h - P h e i n e s t e r , more c o n ­

v e n t i o n a l bu t a s t o n e w a l l e r . Lemante, whose age and expe r i ence

were shown by h i s p e r f e c t l y t imed stop t h r u s t s , de fea ted a l l

t h e I . C . team. Maek lup , a l t h o u g h p e r s i s t e n t I n a t t a c k , was

i n a c c u r a t e . P h e i n e s t e r s t o n e w a l l i n g was e v e n t u a l l y overcome

by A l n s l e y by use e f t h e one-two - by T o p l i s by t h e c u t - o v e r -

and by B r i s t o v e by sheer h a r d work . The F o i l was won 6 - 3 ,

r e s u l t i n g i n a draw e f 13 a l l . A count o f h i t s r e v e a l e d t h a t

t h i s was a l s o a draw e f 46 a l l .
