DEVELOPMENT

According to: WIKIPEDIA

is a function of HUMAN

RESOURCE

MANAGEMENT (HRM)

concerned w/organizational

activity aimed at bettering

the performance of the

individual and groups in

the organizational setting.

TRAINING

• Training is an educational process. .

People can learn new information, re-learn

and reinforce existing knowledge and

skills, and most importantly have time to

think and consider what new options can

help them improve their effectiveness at

work.

PURPOSE

• The purpose of training is to improve

employee capabilities. When the

organization invests in improving the

knowledge and skills of its employees, the

investment is returned in the form of more

productive and effective employees.

PURPOSE

• To promote organizational vitality by

providing progressive training and

development opportunities that support life

long learning and assist individuals in

working effectively together within their

departments and throughout the

organization.

TYPICAL REASONS

Training and development can be initiated for a variety of reasons for an employee or group of employees

• When a performance appraisal indicates

performance improvement is needed

• To "benchmark" the status of improvement

so far in a performance improvement effort

TYPICAL REASONS

• As part of an overall professional

development program

• As part of succession planning to help an

employee be eligible for a planned change

in role in the organization

• To "pilot", or test, the operation of a new

performance management system

• To train about a specific topic

counterproductive logic

• It is better not to develop your own

employees, to prevent competitors from

potentially benefitting from the training.

• Developing your employees makes them

more attractive to other employers,

potentially making them more likely to

turnover. After they have been developed,

employees are free to leave the

organization to work for another

organization, taking the organization’s

investment in their improved level of

knowledge or skills with them to their new

employer.
