End Dimensioning and SmartFit

Introduction.OMS provide independent, specialist measurement and inspection services to the oil and gas industry

• Market leader in pipe end measurement and fit-up• OMS has more than 40 employees and has been trading for over 10 years• Additional services include pipeline inspection and weld inspection (camera

and laser), Faro inspection, reeling trials, pipeline crawlers and QA/QC tools• Offices in UK, USA, South America and Kazakhstan• Worked on all the major projects globally

Clients. We have worked for all the major owners operators, installation companies and welding contractors.

Global operations.

End Dimensioning.End dimensioning is the process of measuring the profile of a pipe end. Capturing these measurements provides an insight to the individual shape and features of a pipe.

Pipe manufacturing process.Deviation in pipe shape is due to the manufacturing process.

UOE pipeLong seam welded

Seamless pipe

Consistent wall thickness, variation in size, shape and ovality, peaking at the seam

Variation in size, shape and ovality, deviation

in wall thickness

Pipe ends are not round. Both of the shapes shown below are considered round, or to have the same out-of-roundness (OoR).

… still has the potential to cause major delays to the project

Even when a pipe…

• has low or no ovality• been measured at the pipe mill using a laser• is in accordance with DNV/API specifications

Misalignment, or HiLo.Reducing project HiLo is the key to good pipe fit-up.

Poor fit-up leads to…

• Project delays• Cut-outs• Increased repairs• Time wasted• Additional project costs• Decreased life of pipeline• Missed deadlines and milestones

Introducing the AutoTool

The OMS AutoTool.

• 2,048 internal & external radial measurements

• Full rotation in less than 12 seconds

• Repeatable and accurate to 0.05mm

• A single team can measure over 200 pipe ends in one shift

Data collection.

• Exact centre of the pipe is calculated by the software

• Measurements are taken from a consistent datum

• 2,048 data points are refined down to 600

Measurement locations.• Pipe mill

• Coating yard

• Spool base

• Pipelay vessel

• Firing line

The most suitable location to minimisepipe handling will be agreed in advance.

Measurement in stacks and racks.

1. ID only within the pipe stack

2. ID and OD within the pipe stack (with >30mm coating)

3. ID and OD on the pipe rack (with >30mm coating)

Measuring pipe ends.

• The long seam weld (LSW) is typically used as the datum point for UOE pipes

• Bottom dead centre (BDC) for seamless pipes• Pipe ends are attributed with the following:

- A-B, A-E, L-S, N-S• The temperature of the pipes is taken to allow for the

coefficient expansion of the steel• Client pipe IDs are referenced within OMS software• Bevelling has no effect on OMS measurements

Technical reporting.Pipe end statistics

• Are your pipes within project specification?

• What fit-up is achievable without OMS involvement?

Introducing SmartFit

OMS SmartFit Software.

• Advance indication of expected HiLo• Meet project HiLo and improve weld quality• Reduction in fit-up time and increased productivity• Reduce downtime (repairs, cut-outs) and minimise

rejected pipe• Selection of 'golden' pipes for stalk tie-ins

All of the above is possible with out-of-specification ‘problem pipe’

Technical reporting.Potential fit-up scenarios with SmartFit

SmartFit interface.

SmartFit options. The following can be set:

• ID only or ID and OD fit-up type• HiLo tolerance can be set• Weld separation• Weld restrictions• Anode selection• Sequencing: single, double, triple and quad joints

SmartFit results.

Efficient pipe handling.Pipes can be sequenced in a specified order allowing efficient pipe handling

• Exposed pipebecomesavailable

• Sequence isindicated bynumbers

Datum and rotation marking.Pipe marking allows the spacer crew to obtain the best possible fit-up

• The datum ismarked on the fixed end

• The rotationmark is appliedto the free end

The pipe fit-up.Pipes are brought together and rotation marks are aligned before welding

To summarise…

• All OMS tools are accurate and repeatable

• The AutoTool is calibrated and verified to UKAS

national standards

• Measured in excess of 500,000 pipe ends worldwide

• We have never found a single perfectly round pipe!

…deciding to go with the SmartFit was a good decision for the execution of our project.

Jimmy Griffin, Subsea 7

…your personnel have performed excellently during the Ichthys campaign.

Derek Duddy, PTL (Hereema)

OMS did an outstanding job for us on the Sakhalin project. Without doubt, we would not have managed to complete and lay the pipe water injection line without the valuable contribution and expertise of OMS engineers.
