Transcript of How to Do What You Want on Wall Street

None of us want to go to Wall Street just to have a job.

We have bigger plans than that.

We figured that if we put our heads down and worked hard, we'd have the career and life of our dreams.

But how many of us are really living our dreams?

This is where I come in.

This is where I come in.

I'm Geoff Blades.

This is where I come in.

I've worked at Goldman, the Carlyle Group...

I'm Geoff Blades.

And coached the people who are your boss' boss. Throughout my journey on Wall Street, I've come to see that the secrets to success

are very simple...

And coached the people who are your boss' boss. Throughout my journey on Wall Street,

I've come to see that the secrets to success are very simple...

But they are also hidden from plain sight

If you want to get what you want out of your career on Wall Street, you

need a new system

You need a guide that helps you figure out what you love, create a plan to get it, and build yourself into the person who can execute that plan.

This is that guide.

The Two Secrets For Doing What You Want

After a decade of research and hundreds of hours coaching senior Wall Street executives, I was able to nail it down to two dominant ideas.

The first secret for doing what you want is: Have a definite purpose.

The second secret for doing what you want is: You must have a process to get it.

"Losers have goals, and winners

have systems."

-Scott Adams, Creator of Dilbert

“Good things don’t arrive by themselves; you need consistency

and a method for everything you do in

life.”

The System for Doing What You Want is built for taking you from where you

are to where you want to be.

The System works in five steps, and begins with figuring out what you want.

In Define It, you learn an approach that solves the common problem of not knowing what you want.

Let me repeat that: It solves the problem of not knowing what you want.

Let me repeat that: It solves the problem of not knowing what you want.

So in just a few pages, your lifelong search for direction will be over!

c

This powerful knowledge enables you to navigate the complexity and choice of

your career.

Beginning with the end in mind, you will develop your grandest vision for your career and your

roadmap for getting there.

Getting It is the intelligence behind The System, where you clearly define how you get what you want. This is the most

advanced approach for cracking the code of Wall Street

In Plan It, you learn a simple, yet potent approach for creating your plan.

In Execute It, you will build an iterative, dynamic, and continuous process for executing your

plan and getting what you want.

Finally, Getting Skills is where you become focused on clearly defining what skills you need and apply a

rigorous process for learning to quickly and powerfully build skills.

You are already the type of person who takes

action and makes things happen, but creating the

career you truly want requires more than

simply action.

To get what you want, you must be willing to take seven types of

actions.

You must build winning habits.

The difference between mediocre and extraordinary careers is much smaller

than most people think.

Evolutionary improvement leads to revolutionary outcomes, and the secret is

building habits of continuous improvement.

"Winning is a habit.

Unfortunately, so is losing.”

-Vince Lombardi

You must be willing to do hard things.

Doing hard things requires taking actions that are

uncomfortable: doing new things, growing, learning,

and being terrified but taking actions anyway.

It requires setting goals that you are uncertain you can achieve.

You must take control and drive change.

“Your career is 100 percent your

responsibility.”

-Rob Kaplan, former Goldman partner

Taking control means ensuring you are positioned correctly.

Taking control means ensuring you are positioned correctly.(seats on Wall Street) are not created equal.

It is up to you to ensure you are positioned in the right seat and in the right way to win.

You must grab hold of your career and go after it!

It’s up to you to develop a sophisticated understanding of the players and the rules, and play them to win.

Nobody will teach you these rules. They are not written down anywhere.

You must focus on development.

The future of learning is personal development, and those who develop will lead.

Leaders are consistently focused on driving success through

developing expertise.

You must aim for mastery.

“Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and

soul can be a true master. For this reason, mastery demands all of

a person.”

-Albert Einstein

The key to an exceptional career is building mastery at the right

things.

You must take risks.

There is little risk in sitting on mute during a call, but you are also failing to add

value.

An investor faces the risk of her ideas being shot down and rejected. She risks her career if the investment goes badly. Yet, taking risk is her only path for opportunity.

So…which one is really more risky?

Having the conviction to establish a consistent habit of taking steps over time is far more

important than the size of those steps, big or small.

A small weekly commitment will make transform your career to

the point that it's unrecognizable in a couple of months, let

alone after a year.

Working for

Goldman Sachs can’t

be all bad...can it?

YES, OF COURSE IT CAN!

Overworked. Overstressed. Underpaid. Underpromoted. Traveling

all the time. Feeling like the goalposts keep moving.

Feeling like someone else has control of your career and your life.

The same challenges exist at every firm and at every level on Wall Street.

Whether you are Gary Cohn, President and COO of Goldman Sachs,

thinking about your ascension, or fresh out of college thinking about your

career direction, you want a sophisticated approach.

On Wall Street, working hard is not enough, and you want an edge that

helps you get what you want. You can ride along with the herd, or you can

grab the lead of the bull and let it know you are in charge!
