Sun Health Knowledge Quiz
The primary cause of skin aging is:
– Smoking
– Bad diet
– Sun Exposure
The effects of sun damage can be seen as early as ones:
– Teens -- 20s
– 30s -- 40s
80% of a person’s sun exposure is acquired before age:
– 18 -- 25 -- 37
Cosmetic procedures like microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing and chemical peels can
make one more susceptive to sun exposure.
– True -- False
If you “temper” your skin by giving yourself a light tan before summer starts, you will be
less likely to cause sun damage to yourself throughout the summer.
– True -- False

Sun Damage Basics
Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation: The Damage Within
Sun Damage is caused by frequent exposure to two types of harmful UV rays:
– UVA Rays - penetrate deep within the skin and contribute heavily to sun damage and melanoma.
– UVB Rays – primarily affects the skins surface, but also contributes to cancers like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
• UVB Rays are also the main cause of sunburns

Sun Damage Basics
Sun Damage Revealed
So how do you know if your skin has been sun damaged? Ask yourself these questions:
– Do you get freckles when you go out in the sun? Do they go away during cooler months when you are more covered-up?
– Have you been sunburned three or more times in your life?
– Before the age of 18, did you sunbathe often or regularly?
– Do you spend long hours outdoors for weekend activities or work?
If you answered “Yes” to 3 or more of these questions, chances are you have sun damage.

The Sun Damage Continuum
The Sun Damage Continuum can help you understand the sun damage you currently have and how serious it may be.
– Mild to Moderate Sun Damage: These are usually the first signs of sun damage to show up. These can include:
• Freckles
• Mild Pigmentation or Sun Spots (a.k.a. Age spots or Liver Spots)
• Fine lines and wrinkles

The Sun Damage Continuum
– Moderate to Severe Sun Damage: With prolonged or excessive exposure to the sun, you begin to see more noticeable signs. These can include:
• Moderate to heavy pigmentation
• Coarse wrinkles
• Leathery skin
• Signs of Cancer
– Severe Sun Damage: Cancers
• Yearly check-ups with a doctor
• Monthly self-examination
• If you suspect any skin irregularities, consult a physician right away

Correcting Existing Sun Damage
How Damaged Skin Looks and Acts
There is abnormal skin cell production deep within the skin
Skin cell turnover significantly slows leaving more dead skin on the surface.
Overproduction and uneven distribution of melanin (skin pigment)
Collagen and elastin are damaged causing sagging, stretching and loss of bounce-back resilience.

Correcting Existing Sun Damage
How Healthy Skin Looks and Acts
Skin produces normal, healthy skin cells.
Healthy new cells are pushed to the surface faster.
Pigment cells distribute melanin more evenly.
Collagen and elastin is strong and healthy, maintaining skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Antioxidants: The antidote to sun damage
What are they?
– Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that help maintain health by slowing the destructive aging process of cellular molecules
– Common antioxidants are vitamins A, C, D and E and certain compounds called carotenoids (like lutein and beta-carotene).
How do they work?
– To understand how antioxidants work, we must first understand the role that free radicals play in cell destruction
Obagi System—correct & prevent sun-damaged skin 19
Preventing Future Sun Damage
Antioxidants: The antidote to sun damage
The role of the free radical
– As cells function normally in the body, they produce damaged molecules — free radicals.
– Free radicals – oxygen particles that have unpaired electrons – attach to healthy cells and steal the positive electron in an effort to heal themselves
– This damage continues in a chain reaction, and entire cells soon become damaged and die – a process called oxidation
– When skin absorbs sunlight, oxidation occurs
– As the body ages and is repeatedly exposed to harmful UV rays, it loses its own ability to produce natural antioxidants to combat this process
– The result: skin looks old before its time

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Antioxidants: the antidote to sun damage
How antioxidants combat free radicals
– Antioxidants help prevent widespread cellular destruction by willingly donating positive electrons to the free radical
– This activity helps to stabilize free radical before it can affect healthy cells
To the rescue: topical antioxidants
– When used with a sunscreen, topical antioxidants such as vitamin C provide exceptional protection against UV radiation and free radical damage
– L-ascorbic acid is the most stable form of topical vitamin C
– L-ascorbic acid strengthens collagen and elastin damaged by free radicals
– Stable, topical L-ascorbic acid delivers more vitamin C into the skin than diet

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Sunscreen: As important as your daily vitamin
Use it EVERY day, no matter how long you’ll be out in the sun
– 1 to 2 teaspoons-full for face
– 1 ounce for body – enough to fill a shot glass
Use a product with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher
– SPF is a factor that helps understand how much longer we can be in the sun before burning, relative to our tendency to burn without sunscreen
• For example, if you are a fair skinned person who normally burns after 20 minutes in
the sun, a sunscreen with SPF 15 would allow you to remain in the sun for 300
minutes before burning. (20 x 15 = 300)
Look for The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation
– Products with this seal are recommended as effective UV sunscreens
– Obagi-C Rx System C-SunGuard SPF 30
– Obagi Nu-Derm System Healthy Skin Protection SPF 35

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Sunscreen: Choose your ingredients wisely
What you should look for: A good broad-spectrum sunscreen should contain both physical and chemical sunscreens for significant UVA protection.
Physical Sunscreens reflect and/or scatter UV rays and radiation
– Provides the broadest spectrum sun protection, blocking both
UVA and UVB rays
– Micronized Zinc Oxide – Z-Cote
• Preferred ingredient to combat skin aging from long UVA rays
• Recommended for daily use and on compromised skin
– Titanium Dioxide
– The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation

Preventing Future Sun Damage
SUNSCREEN: Choose your ingredients wisely
Chemical Sunscreens absorb UV rays and radiation
– Avobenzone
• Chemical sunscreen for those with concerns for irritation
– PABA esters (glyceryl, padimate A and padimate O)
• These newer preparations have fewer side effects than the original PABA.
– Salicylates (homosalate, octyl salicylate)
– Cinnamates (cinoxate, octyl methoxycinnamate or octocrylene)
• Octocylene is a cinnamate with both UVA and UVB absorbing properties.
– Benzophenones
• These can absorb both UVA and UVB rays

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Sunscreen: Make it work while you play
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall…
– You need sunscreen in all seasons, every day
“Water-resistant” sunscreens
– should retain their protective ability for at least 40 minutes in water
“Waterproof” sunscreens
– should protect the skin for 80 minutes in water
No sunscreen can be effective unless it is properly and frequently applied!

Preventing Future Sun Damage
Protective Clothing: what’s in your closet?
Keep yourself covered
– Heavier fabrics like denim offer more protection than lightweight fabrics like lace and linen
– Specially designed sun-protective clothing has a tighter weave than typical summer fabrics and are usually darker in color
– Hats are a must! Look for wide rims ( 2 to 3 inches) that go all the way around the hat for the best UV protection
See how much protection your clothes provide
– Hold an article of clothing up to a light bulb. If you can see through it, its SPF value is probably less than 15
– If light gets through but you can’t see through, its SPF value is probably 15 – 50.
