How to Complete Reading Logs

Reading Logs

A reading log is a great place to react to what you read and develop your writing skills. You can find out exactly how you feel about the characters; you may gain insight about the theme and plot; you can expand your overall enjoyment of the literature; and you can improve your writing for constructed responses.

Reading Log Guidelines

• Fiction or non-fiction book

• Read for at least 20 minutes

• Continue to read same book until finished, then start a new one

• Textbook may be used once a week

• In-class reading does not count

Not Allowed

• Catalogues

• Magazines

• Graphic novels

• Music lesson books

Reading Log Form

Complete ALL of the following in the left column to earn one point for each day:

• Date • Book title• Start and stop time• Adult signature

Reflection

The reflection box should include 2-3 sentences.

Your reflection can explain a new character that was introduced, how the setting changed, how the story ended, what you found interesting, a question you have about the reading…

Reading Log Rubric

• Legible (easy to read)• At least 2 meaningful, ell-written sentences• First column boxes fully completed• Due each Friday• Even if you are absent one day, you are still

expected to read, complete log, and turn it in on Friday (or next day in school)

• Remember no late homework, including reading logs

I COMPLETELY understood what I read:• I answered all parts of question• I included “enough” important

information from the text• I included new ideas from my head

(inferences/extensions)• My ideas and information are clearly

connected

Constructed Response Score: 2

I MOSTLY understood what I read:

• I answered the question

• I did not include “enough” information from the text

• I included new ideas from my brain… but they were not fully connected or limited

Constructed Response Score: 1

I SOMEWHAT understood what I read:

• I tried to answer the question

• I did not include “enough” information from the text

Constructed Response Score: 0

I DID NOT understand what I read:

• My response was completely incorrect, not related to the question, or missing

Reading Log Calendar• Read/complete log Mon., Tues., Wed. and

choose one night to answer prompt• Folder and completed reading log form are

due on Thursday• Even if you are absent one day, you are still

expected to read, complete log, and turn it in on Thursday (or next day in school)

• Remember no late homework, including reading logs
