AGRIS is: currently a big metadata database in agriculture:

contains more than 7 million bibliographic references on agricultural research and technology with more than 65 institutions continuously feeding this database with periodic updates

A multilingual repository enriched with bibliographic data which are collected from dispersed agricultural institutions world wide.

A mash-up web application that links the bibliographic AGRIS knowledge to related resources on the Web using the Linked Open Data methodology.

The online system is highly visited, reaching peaks of 250K visits/month from more than 200 countries and territories.

The current system, AGRIS 2.0, was launched on December 5th 2013: it is mostly based on RDF and allows the creation of mashup pages to integrate many different information available on the Web, related to the AGRIS domain.

Reasons for publishing your data in AGRIS

You will become a member of a dynamic and privileged network of Agricultural Content Providers.

The name “AGRIS centers” stands for all the data providers that have contributed or are contributing with bibliographic data to AGRIS, from national libraries, institutional repositories, single or corporate journal publishers to service providers.

You do not give away your content: Only the metadata records describing your resources will be published through the AGRIS Web portal along with the link to the actual resource, stored in your server.

Access to the AGRIS Web portal and its services is and will remain free!

Step 1 2/7 Metadata: Accepted all metadata formats. Highly recommended : PubMed XML METS XML DOAJ ARTICLES MODS AGRIS AP Also acceptable are: MARCXML, MARC21, OAI-DC, ENDNOTE XML,

SIMPLE_DC.

Step 1 3/7 XML:

It is recommended to send your data in XML by e-mail(a compressed file attachment like .zip or .rar, containing all the XML files).

Step 1 4/7Recommendation for well formed XMLs use encoding UTF- 8.

eg. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

use <![CDATA[…..]]> for title, abstract and other element with too much textual information.

Not mandatory but recommended. Use some form of subject indexing(like

AGROVOC thesaurus); it is already sufficient to index the resources with free keywords.

Please also take note of Agrotagger*, a tool that indexes your articles automatically using AGROVOC.

Step 1 6/7 OAI-PMH (Highly Recomended): Use the Open Archives Initiative - Protocol for Metadata

Harvesting (OAI-PMH), a low-barrier mechanism for repository interoperability.

Develop an additional layer to allow AGRIS to harvest metadata formats, like qualified DC or MODS.

Step 1 7/7 Create a set specification by subject. Please note that it

is more useful to have one general subject set in which all topics related to agriculture are put than many specific sets, since each set needs to be harvested separately.

e.g. SetName : Animal production, SubSet : Animal genetics and breeding

You can register as a data provider at Open Archives. The Open Archives Forum Online Tutorial describes in detail the necessary steps to implement the protocols in an Institutional Repository.

If you comply with these requirements, AGRIS will be able to publish your data.

How to provide the metadata

Step 2 1/4 If your journal is indexed in the Directory of Open

Access Journals (DOAJ), it might well be that AGRIS is already indexing your journal. Please check if it appears in the List of DOAJ Journals indexed in AGRIS.

If your journal uses the Open Journal System (OJS), you will be able to export your data directly to AGRIS in different standard formats, such as DOAJ, METS, PubMed XML and other XML formats. For information on exporting from OJS, please visit the Importing and Exporting Data page of the Public Knowledge Project.

Step 2 2/4 If you have a collection of resources which are not

described with metadata but still you would like to make them available through AGRIS, you may create them using a tool like AgriMetaMaker (AMM) or Mendeley.

If you are not yet using a repository application, but are looking for one, please take note of AgriDrupal and AgriOcean DSpace

Step 3 Send a request to agris@fao.org, by filling the registration

form. 

  After the valuation of the new collection in terms of

appropriateness of resources and metadata, your request will be forwarded to agris@agroknow.gr in order to receive clarifications about any doubt or question you may have and to be part also of AGRIS Network via CIARD Ring.

Updates

At the end of every month the AGRIS Processing Unit processes and publishes the metadata sent by content providers.

In order for the xml files to be indexed at the end of the current month, they must be sent by the 15th of the month.

The harvest of metadata from a OAI-PMH target is done upon notification from the content provider or upon an agreement of monthly, bi –monthly etc harvesting.

What it is : Web-based system for distributed data input and
