Time period where people in Europe were thinking about the natural world and the universe in a new way (1500s-1600s).

How did each of these factors contribute to the Scientific Revolution?

A. The Renaissance

1. Spirit of curiosity (people were questioning things).

2. Studying the world around you (not just religion) is now accepted.

3. Interest in the scientific writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans (like Aristotle).

4. Printing press is invented

1. Luther challenged the Catholic Church on its ways….if you can question religion, you can question

the world around you too.

C. The Age of Exploration

1. Better navigational tools were needed to help explorers travel to new places → leads to more scientific discoveries.

Galileo Galilei

Geocentric Theory – Earth is the center of the universe, sun and planets revolve around it. Supported by Aristotle and the Church.

Heliocentric Theory – Sun is the center of the universe, Earth and other planets revolve around it. Supported by Copernicus and Galileo.

Pluto has lost its status as a planet, now considered a “dwarf” planet.

We are still rethinking the solar system today!
