Scene One(JUSTIN is practicing piano – playing “Silent Night!” and singing along. He keeps mess-ing up. See page 59.)(JESSICA is sitting on the couch with a schoolbook propped open – looking very frus-trated.)
JUSTIN: (singing) Silent night. Holy night. All is…
(plays wrong note, stops, starts again) (singing) Silent night. Holy Night. All is… (plays wrong note)
(continues that pattern over and over again – without singing)JESSICA: Mom, I need help. I can not figure this math out. I’ve got an exam on Friday!
MOM: (from offstage) Okay, I’ll be in to help in a minute! I’ve got to get this batch ofcookies in the oven. I won the cookie party last year, and these have to be evenbetter than last year’s.
(MOM walks in wearing an apron covered with flour, hand in an oven mitt.)MOM: Okay, what can I do to help? I have about 40 seconds until this batch of cookies
is done.
(JUSTIN continues to practice without singing.)JESSICA: (pointing to book) This (point) is the problem. And, I have 15 more to do. And, I
just finished my study guide.
MOM: Well, sweetie, it sounds like you are making good progress. Here, you need tocarry the one, and then regroup.
(oven timer goes off)MOM: (running offstage) Hold on! I’ve got to go get those!
DAD: (bursting through the other side stage) Honey, I’m home!
JESSICA: Dad! I really need help on this.
MOM: (from offstage) Hey, honey, glad you’re home! How was your day?
JESSICA: Dad, I really need help!
DAD: (to JESSICA) Okay, okay.
(calling out to MOM) It was good – except that now I have another interview forthis promotion tomorrow, and we have the office Christmas party coming up.
(to JESSICA) Okay, honey. Let’s see, you need to carry the one. And then re-group.
(JESSICA slaps her forehead and shrugs.)DAD: (to JUSTIN) Oh, son… you’ve GOT to play that correctly!

(JULIE dressed in a bathrobe/angel costume keeps walking around in circles looking forsomething.)
JULIE: (whining) I can’t find it. I just can’t find it. I really need my halo before we go.(calls out) Hey, mom, I can’t find my halo. And we need to hurry or we’re goingto be late for the practice. I’ll be in the car!
(JULIE keeps looking around under things – knocks over a piece of the nativity withoutnoticing and then exits the room.)
MOM: (running in franticly) Oh, my goodness, I almost forgot! She has a rehearsaltonight for the Christmas musical. Any chance you could take her? I’ve got to getthese cookies done! The cookie party is tomorrow!
DAD: Okay. I’ll drop her off, and then I’ll go get a little shopping done. I’ve got a fewmore gifts to buy.
MOM: Ooh, while you are out can you get a gift for the gift exchange, please? (callingto him as he leaves) Just NOT a fruitcake!
(JUSTIN is still playing.)MOM: Keep practicing buddy! You can get it.
(Lights down on home scene. Lights up on CHOIR.)

Scene Two(DIRECTOR (the real one) is onstage in front of choir, directing kids, speaking with backto audience.)
DIRECTOR: (loud voice) Great job, choir. Okay… Nativity Scene… everyone, get in yourspot. Choir, don’t block the angels. Angels? Is that all the angels?
JULIE: (comes running in in angel costume with halo falling off) Sorry, I’m late!
DIRECTOR: (pointing and accounting for each character) Joseph… Mary… Where are thesheep?
CHOIR KID 1: Ummm… they’re… eating the manger straw.
CHOIR KID 2: Yeah… they’ve been… (sheep voice) baa’d.DIRECTOR: (groaning) Oh! And where are the wise men?
CHOIR KID 1: There was an (finger quotes) “accident.”DIRECTOR: What do you mean an (finger quotes) “accident”?CHOIR KID 2: Well, let’s just say it looks like the wise men are only bringing gold and
frankincense to the baby Jesus.
DIRECTOR: Where’s the myrrh?
CHOIR KID 2: (pointing to floor) There. (pointing somewhere else on floor) And there.
(pointing to a third randomly silly place, like the ceiling) and… there!
DIRECTOR: What a crazy night….
(Lights down on choir and up on home scene.)
Scene Three(JUSTIN is playing piano still – and still messing up.)(MOM runs in with pan of cookies – hits table and knocks over a nativity piece butdoesn’t notice.)
MOM: These are finally cool enough to decorate. (to JESSICA) Can you help me deco-rate these? You are so good at that!
JESSICA: (jumps up and drops books, knocking over a nativity piece) Oh, I love decoratingcookies with you! Okay, I can take a little break from studying.
MOM: Justin, you want to help?
(JUSTIN plays one more time and then gets up and walks to table to decorate cookies.)(MOM, JULIE and JUSTIN stand around table decorating cookies.)(DAD bursts in door with shopping bags and knocking over nativity piece.)

DAD: Success! I made it through the mall and found almost everything else we need!Yes! (holds up fruitcake) And I even found a fruitcake!
(JULIE enters dancing and singing the choir song.) JULIE: It’s Christmas! The bells are ringing…
MOM: (to DAD) So glad you are home! You can help decorate!
(turns to JULIE) Julie, how was choir rehearsal? Are you guys ready?
JULIE: Well… we will be! The wise men had a problem spilling their gifts. And theshepherds lost the sheep. But at least Mary didn’t drop Jesus this time!
DAD: Ms. Diane (Note: Use your Director’s name.) has so much more patience than Iever would have! I don’t know how she does it!
(to Jessica) Jessica, did you finish your homework?
JESSICA: Almost. One of my problems is a survey. Could you all answer a question forme? It’s easy. What is the best part of Christmas?
MOM: Well, that’s an easy one!
(very fast back and forth)JUSTIN: Presents!
MOM: What?
JUSTIN: Cookies!
MOM: No.
JUSTIN: Decorations!
MOM: Seriously?
JUSTIN: Okay…
JESSICA: Maybe someone else could answer?
(CAROLERS start singing “Jingle Bells” quietly center stage.)JULIE: Hey, listen!
(No one pays attention.)JESSICA: Dad? What is your answer?
JULIE: Guys! Listen!
(Still, no one pays attention…)DAD: Well... I love Christmas. We have the chance to celebrate…
JULIE: Hello! Guys! It’s carolers! Listen!
(EVERYONE freezes, listens, and then all scramble to the window/door!)

Scene Four(coming back inside)
MOM: They sang some of my very favorite songs!
JULIE: I know! Mine too.
JUSTIN: I love those songs.
JESSICA: I’m so glad they came.
(JESSICA in front – sees nativity knocked over and puts an arm out to block everyoneelse.)
JESSICA: Hey! What happened here?
MOM: What do you mean?
JULIE: What happened to what?
JESSICA: The nativity — everything is knocked over!
JUSTIN: Oh man! (kneels down beside table) It sure is.
MOM: (picking up one piece and setting it up correctly) I must have hit the table when Iwas running around getting the cookies ready.
JESSICA: (setting another piece in place) I wasn’t even paying attention when I came inwith all my school books.
DAD: (putting another piece up) Or maybe I hit it with the shopping bags.
JULIE: I don’t think any of us were paying attention. It’s been crazy busy around here.
MOM: We were all too busy. But look at all these pieces. All the different parts of thereal Christmas story.
DAD: I bet it was crazy busy then, too.
JUSTIN: Mary and Joseph had to travel a long way to Bethlehem.
JULIE: Even farther than we go to Grandma’s house?
DAD: Yes… even farther. And, they had to walk!MOM: And Mary was expecting a Baby!
JESSICA: (puts Mary and Joseph in the nativity stable) And then, when they got there, itwas so busy in town that they didn’t even have a place to stay!
DAD: (picking up a shepherd) And what about the shepherds! They were working thatday. A stinky, smelly job.
JULIE: Even stinkier than Justin’s shoes?
JUSTIN: Hey! (pause) I bet those shepherds were scared out of their minds when the an-gels started singing! (pause) Can you even imagine?

Christmas Story ReadingLuke 2:1-20 (NIV)
NARRATOR 1: In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be takenof the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place whileQuirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to regis-ter.
NARRATOR 2: So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, toBethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line ofDavid. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married tohim and was expecting a child.
NARRATOR 3: While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gavebirth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in amanger, because there was no guest room available for them.
NARRATOR 4: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watchover their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory ofthe Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
NARRATOR 5: But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news thatwill cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior hasbeen born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You willfind a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
NARRATOR 6: Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earthpeace to those on whom his favor rests.”
NARRATOR 7: When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said toone another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary andJoseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
NARRATOR 8: When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had beentold them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shep-herds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them inher heart.
NARRATOR 9: The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things theyhad heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Scene Five(FAMILY moves to front center stage.)
MOM: That night in Bethlehem was possibly crazier and busier than we get here andnow.
DAD: Traveling, fighting the crowds, singing, giving gifts…
JULIE: Then and now.JUSTIN: But the perfect gift was given for us that night.
JESSICA: Love was born that first Christmas.
MOM: Crazy and busy became peaceful and holy.
DAD: God gave His Son Jesus so that we can have peace even when we are busy.
JULIE: Peace doesn’t mean calm and quiet. That first night wasn’t calm. And it surewasn’t quiet.
JUSTIN: Those shepherds were scared. The crowds were crazy. The angels’ singing wasloud.
JESSICA: But it sure was peaceful. Because the Prince of Peace was born that night.
MOM: Jesus brings peace to a crazy, busy world.
DAD: Because we know we are loved, no matter what.
JULIE: We’ve been given the perfect gift — Jesus.
JUSTIN: Christmas is crazy!
JESSICA: Christmas is busy!
MOM: Christmas is peaceful.
DAD: Christmas is holy.
ALL: Christmas is JESUS!

Production NotesBy Dana Anderson
Summary
Luke 2:14 (NIrV) “May glory be given to God in the highest heaven! And may peace be givento those he is pleased with on earth!”
John 14:27 (NIrV) “I leave my peace with you. I give my peace to you. I do not give it to youas the world does. Do not let your hearts be troubled. And do not be afraid.”
Christmastime is often crazy busy with SO many things to do. From parties to shopping, fromrecitals to exams, it is easy to lose focus on the Prince of Peace that was born in Bethlehem thatholy night. Our Christmas today is not usually quiet, calm or silent. That first Christmas wascrazy busy, too! But Jesus came to bring peace and hope to a crazy busy world. This Simple Plusmusical focuses on a family running in every direction and potentially missing His peace in themiddle of crazy. The musical is 30 minutes long.
Characters
Mom – frantic, fun and Christmas-y; Christmas apron, oven mitt and a bit messy
Dad – work-clothes and briefcase; shopping bags
Jessica – older sister; frustrated with homework
Justin – practices piano persistently
Julie – little sister; dressed as angel
Director – the “real” director – YOU
Choir Kid 1
Choir Kid 2 – silly
Nativity characters (non-speaking parts) – Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men
Carolers – small group of choir kids to start singing carols quietly
Narrators 1-9 – can be individual choir kids or could be combined
Note: all characters can be played by either boys or girls, except mom and dad.
Scenery
The entire musical is set in two settings: Family Room and Nativity.
FAMILY ROOM: Use sofas, chairs, side tables, lamps, etc. to create a comfortable space on oneside of the stage for the characters to gather around during the scenes. It needs to include:
Piano keyboard, sofa or chair, coffee table with nativity scene on it, small folding table.
NOTE: The tabletop nativity needs to be placed in the center of the stage. It should start out withall the characters in place. During Scenes One and Two, the family should “accidentally” bumpthe table to knock down all the pieces by the time they go out to listen to the carolers. If needed,

during “Gloria Medley” a stagehand could sneak in to make sure all pieces are knocked over andout of place!
NATIVITY: Recreate a nativity scene – a manger, hay, large stuffed sheep, a bench or stool, etc.
Place choir risers across rear center stage.
Props
Tabletop nativity scene
Schoolbooks
Cookie tray and cookies and icing
Shopping bags
Fruitcake
Jingle bells for Christmas carolers
Nativity props
Wise men gifts (3 empty decorated boxes or bottles)
Manger/wrapped baby doll representing Jesus
Stuffed sheep
Costumes
Choir and characters can wear casual “Christmas-y” clothes (jeans, slacks, t-shirts, etc.), or ifyou would like a more uniform look, have all wear jeans and a specific colored shirt (not whiteor black).
Mom should wear flour-spattered apron.
Julie wears angel costume (can carry wings).
Nativity characters can wear biblical character costumes: robes, cloth belts and headpieces, angel costumes, shepherd staffs, etc.
Lighting
Light your stage and risers uniformly.
Add spots as necessary downstage for the main actors.
Suggestions for added effect:
At the bridge of the song, “Take Me Back to Bethlehem,” dim the stage lights and bring up aspot on piano keyboard and the nativity scene. Bring choir lights back up as the choir begins tosing.
Use colored lighting effects (red or green wash) for the songs, “Gloria Medley” and “Crazy,Busy, Peaceful, Holy Night.”

Audio
For best results, mic your children’s choir with choir mics spaced evenly in front of risers.
Provide 6 wireless headset/lav mics for the cast.
Provide 2 stand mics center stage (either front center or right in front of risers) for narrators.
Remember to check all batteries before the start of the show!
Visual
Consider adding visual interest with text, images, or video displayed on your screen.
For a simple option, create a title slide with the musical title that can be shown during the entiremusical.
During the songs, display the lyrics for everyone to follow along.
Use the lyric videos offered to enhance the display!
Choreography and Staging
Movement adds interest for the audience!
It also helps the children remember the lyrics.
One or two groups of auditioned dance teams could add interest with more difficult choreogra-phy. If you have a talented choreographer, you might want to include a ballet in part of “TakeMe Back to Bethlehem.” It would be fun to plan some tableaus or crazy motions to “act out” theverses of the opener.
Try adding a few unified motions to each song for the choir, like large hand motions, raisingarms, or swaying.
Use these as suggestions as a starting point for your choir.
“Christmas Is”
As the music begins, choir files in from all possible entrances and line sup on risers whilesinging. Cast enters last and ends up in the family room set.
Within the script, Justin plays the keyboard over and over. He is “practicing” and doesn’t playthe song correctly each time. He only plays the first 6 measures and incorrectly plays the notefor “calm” every time and then restarts. Have a keyboard at the back of your “home” set. Justincan sit by the piano and either play the song himself OR pretend to play (turn the sound off onthe keyboard) and have your accompanist play offstage. He finally plays the song “correctly”during “Take Me Back to Bethlehem” song. See staging note under “Take Me Back to Bethle-hem.”
“It’s Christmas”
Chorus: step touch starting to the right.
Each time these words are sung, freeze and use these motions:

“Joy to the world” – shoot both hands straight above head and bring them slowly down to sidesagain by the word “world.”
“Take Me Back to Bethlehem”
Once the solos are over, the nativity characters slowly move from the choir risers into place bythe manger.
During the second chorus (meas. 61), Justin moves to the keyboard. He pretends to play “SilentNight!” correctly (while track plays). The family all moves to the nativity and kneels. Justinjoins them once the choir begins to sing the bridge section.
After song, the Narrators move to stand mics (placed center stage) for the Christmas Story Read-ing.
Afterwards, the family stands and moves to front of stage in front of nativity to finish the scenespeaking directly to audience.
Teaching Tips
Encourage your choir at every opportunity to sing beautifully! In the various styles of thearrangements in this musical, they will have a chance to sound pop, high energy, lyrical andworshipful.
All good singing starts with good breathing and good vocal technique. Begin each rehearsalwith a short warm-up that includes some of these concepts and techniques.
• A reminder about good posture – back straight, shoulders relaxed, “tall at your belt.”
• A breathing exercise, such as this: take a deep breath and sing the alphabet on one pitchas many times as you can before you run out of breath. Encourage the singers to“squeeze” with their abs when they start to run out of air.
• A vocal warm-up, such as “Mama made me mash my M ‘n M” (for resonance),
or “I love to run in the sun” (for vocal range, breathing and a beautiful open “AH”sound).

• A funny way to help the kids experience an open throat and big sound is to have themsing like the tenor at the opera. Have them stand up tall, with hands clasped in front oftheir belt. Ask them to feel like they are yawning, then all together sing the first phrase ofthe “Hallelujah Chorus.” Lead the way by exaggerating it for them. It’s okay to be sillyand laugh – just make sure they are hearing and feeling that big open sound, which theywill need for the few high notes in the music!
• Help the kids discover that they can sing with different sounds or different kinds of“voices.” They have a “head” voice that is high and light. They will need to use this beau-tiful voice especially in “Take Me Back to Bethlehem.” It takes a lot of air, using big, deep breathing, to support this high voice. They will also need to use this voice in “TheFirst Noel” so the high notes are beautiful and not screechy. The high energy, fuller voicethey use in “Christmas Is” comes naturally to most kids, but be sure they don’t push toohard and get harsh or sound like yelling.
Repetition is the key to confidence! Think of many ways to have the children sing each songmany times. Don’t just sing all the way through every time. Plan your rehearsals to spend 5-10minutes per song during each rehearsal. Try to get to all songs at every rehearsal.
• Clearly define the sections in each song – verse, chorus, bridge, etc. Help the kids see andhear the sections that are alike and different.
• Sometimes only work on one section of a song: at one session only rehearse the wordyverses in “Christmas Is.” Don’t even sing the chorus. In “Gloria Medley,” sometimesonly work on one of the carols, or just the new chorus, instead of singing all the waythrough.
• You might take one or two difficult phrases out and sing them as a warm-up. Do this withthe ending section of “Crazy, Busy, Peaceful, Holy Night” that begins with “MerryChristmas.” If they have trouble getting the pitches exact, have them sing the syllables“doobie, doobie…” instead of the words.
• When the kids have the words to a song fairly well memorized, play a “Sing/Think”game. Use the split-track without vocals or just sing with no accompaniment. Have themstart singing, then at your signal (maybe finger over lips), stop singing and just “mouth”the words. Then at your next signal, all start singing again. If you are doing this withouttracks, it makes everyone really pay attention so they can stay together. You can do aphrase at a time or just a few words at a time. A variation of this would be to speak thewords in rhythm, keep it going silently in your head at the signal, then aloud again at nextsignal.
• Always make sure the kids know what the words mean, especially in the carols. Some-times we just sing sounds and don’t make sense. In “Gloria Medley,” read the lyrics ofeach carol as a poem. Talk about the unusual or unfamiliar words. (What is a “herald”angel?)

Be sure they know what Gloria in excelsis means. This is Latin. (Hey, you’re learning anotherlanguage.) Gloria in excelsis Deo, means “Glory to God in the highest.” Help the kids find thisin the Christmas account in Luke 2. It is what the angels sang to the shepherds. The correct wayto pronounce the Latin phrase is “glow-ree-ah een (long “E”, not short “I”) egg-shell-sees day-oh.”
Another foreign word in this carol medley is Noel. It is the French word for Christmas. Hallelujah is the Bible word (Hebrew) that means “Praise the Lord.” Sing it with a beautifulopen “AH.”
Kickoff Party
Introduce your potential cast and choir to the musical theme.
Help them understand the connections between the Bible stories and the songs.
Read Luke 2 aloud.
Talk about how many days or rehearsal times you have until the performance.
Play the CD as the children play games and enjoy snacks.
Introduce the characters and announce audition times.
Suggested games:Crazy Busy FREEZE DANCE
Use the “Crazy, Busy, Peaceful, Holy Night” song to have a dance party!
Explain that when the music is on, they should dance.
When the music stops, everyone FREEZE!
The TRAY Game
Find a selection of small objects (perhaps Christmas objects like a candy cane, small gift, orna-ments, ribbon, etc.) and arrange them on a tray. Vary the number of objects according to the agesof your children. Cover the tray until you are ready to play. Uncover the tray, and place it whereall children can see it. Give the children a certain amount of time to memorize the contents ofthe tray, and then cover it up again. Ask the children to write down all of the objects that theycan remember.
Vary the objects according to the abilities of the children. Older children might be given sometiny objects such as a pin or a paper clip; younger children will remember better if they are givenlarger, brighter objects.
Detective Game
Ask a volunteer to come to the front of the room. The others should notice details about the vol-unteer. He leaves the room very briefly and changes one thing about his appearance. For in-stance, he could untie one of his shoes or put his nametag on the other side of his shirt. He thencomes back to the front of the room. The goal is to see how quickly the group notices what isdifferent.
