By ERICA SCHMITTCORRESPONDENT
The holidays are upon us and pressure to find the right presents for family and friends is starting to become more and more nerve-racking. Specific children’s toys like the Playstation 3 and those craved by adults like the I-Pad or Pandora bracelets are repeatedly being found on peoples’ lists this year, and can be purchased at well-known chain stores everywhere.
However, everybody loves to unwrap something that is surprisingly different. Not every child wants what all the other kids at school are wishing for, and not every woman has to wear the same jewelry brand that her friends are wearing.
North Main Street in Southington has a row of shops that offer unusual gifts, so after parking in the free public lot shoppers can walk to each within seconds.
The Auracle Gift Shop & Pottery Studio at 1 North Main St. has “gifts for the mind, body & spirit,” according to the store’s
website. Besides the silver & gemstone jewelry, books, relaxing music, fairies, wind chimes, home décor, and spa products, they have gifts for the spiritually aware or magically inclined person in your life. These include smudge sticks, crystals, pen-dulums, Tarot cards, Willowtree Angels, soy candles, incense, oils, aroma diffusers, divination tools and herbs.
The store also has a section of holiday gifts featuring decorated baskets with spa products, tea lights and candles, a wide variety of ornaments, and stockings stuffed with cat treats.
Their pottery studio holds free instruc-tional classes for children and adults as well. Owner Eryen LaLonde makes pot-tery herself. “Anyone can come in anytime the store is open to use the studio,” she said. The use of the studio costs $8 per person, plus the cost of pottery, and that fee covers all studio materials including their stencil and stamp collection, and regular paints.
The studio is holding holiday events in addition to their regular classes. On Friday
there will be an Ornament Painting Party from 6 to 8 p.m., allowing kids to paint at least six ornaments and enjoy a pizza party. The cost of the event is $35 per person.
On Dec. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., a Holiday Hand Print Plates event, which also includes a pizza party, will feature the guided creation of two holiday hand print plates to give as gifts to family. The cost is $36 per person.
The Auracle is open on Sunday the
month of December from 12 to 5, Tuesday and Wednesday 12 to 6, Thursday and Friday 12 to 8, and Saturday 11 to 6. A schedule of children and adult classes along with photos and information about the shop’s merchandise can be found at www.theauracle.com.
Next door is a haven for fantasy-game enthusiasts known as Fables Comics & Collectibles which specializes in novelty items hard to find anywhere else like comics, gaming cards, action figures, post-ers, board games, T-shirts and collectible swords.
“The gaming cards make great stock-ing stuffers,” suggested owner Stephen Lazorick. He is offering graphic novels and comics at 25 percent off for the holiday season. Fables Comics & Collectibles is located at 5 North Main St. and is closed Monday, open Tuesday 11 to 8, Wednesday 11 to 9, Thursday through Saturday 11 to 8, and Sunday 12 to 6. Its inventory can be seen at www.fablescomicsonline.com.

1-stop shopping in Southington: from comics to gift baskets
A skip, hop and step down the sidewalk is Gifts In a Basket, a shop that specializes in the creation of gift baskets filled with your choice of gourmet food products, baby toys and bears, or spa items.
Owner Renee Belenger loves to make up baskets for customers based on their preferred price range and designated occasion. “We also sell our products individually, and when someone gets a certain item in a basket that they love, they come back and buy lots more,” explained Belenger.
Their wide selection of gour-met food products includes pastas, popcorn, chips, dipping mustards and many other snack choices, bak-ing mixes, jellies, sauces, soups and sweet delights like their popular ‘Cheesecake-in-a-jar’, cookies, and raspberry jalapeno dessert sauce.
Because Branford Hall Institute is located upstairs, they also have a coffee and tea counter with coffee from The Coffee Trade Roasting House of Avon, snacks, soups and pizza delivered every day at noon-
time for the students. Baskets usually start around $35.
Gifts in a Basket is located at 51 North Main St. They are open Monday and Friday 8 to 4, Tuesday to Thursday 8 to 9, and Saturday 10 to 2. You can order online at www.bratsbaskets.com.
Just across the street and around the corner is Pamela Bristol’s gift shop known as Move over Martha. Bristol’s focus is interior-decorating furnishings and furniture, but also has an eclectic collection of gifts perfect for the woman in your life.
Her custom wreaths and gar-lands adorn the store and are for sale, along with ornaments, quirky jewelry, entertainment-ware, and clothing, specialty soaps and lotions, and much more to embellish both homes and people.
Bristol also offers an interior-dec-orating service, helping customers redesign a room or even set up entire homes before owners move in. They have access to many fur-niture and home accessory suppliers and can guide you through the design process.
Bristol’s dog Mabel has her own
red and white bed and matching holiday collar and she can be found prancing around the store or rest-ing like a queen in her bed near the entrance.
Move over Martha opened at 35 Center St. 12 years ago and is open Monday through Friday 11 to 6, Saturday 10 to 5, and Sunday 10 to 2. More information can be found at www.moveovermartha.com.
None of these shops are competi-tors since they each offer uniquely diverse gifts for just about anyone on your holiday shopping list. Because they are all local, neighborhood gift shops, they fit in to the mission of the ‘3/50 Project,’ which is all about supporting independent retailers and shopping locally, and advocated for on the Auracle’s website.
“For every $100 spent in inde-pendently owned stores,” reads the site, “$68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.
If you spend that at a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home.” To learn more, visit www.the350p-roject.net.

Green gifting is tricky. It can mean sussing out exactly how much repurposed material was used, or researching the level of sustainabil-ity. It can mean chasing exactly how an eco-cause spends your dollar and whether a nonprofit lives up to its reputation. If all of that makes your head hurt, offer a gentle reminder about the importance of saving the planet instead.
For kids in need of a nudge to save money along with the envi-ronment, Greenergrassdesign.com sells a green flocked piggybank for a suggested retail price of $18. It looks like it’s made of grass, but in
a good way. Plush wild animal toys called
Greenzys are made of soy fibers and nontoxic dyes. They sell for $19.99, complete with a code to be redeemed for a tree planting in a child’s honor, along with a cer-tificate, at Greenzys.com. The line from Kids Preferred also includes books. Look for the stuffies at Fao.com, Fred Segal or on Amazon.
Adorable animal-design storage baskets can harness kid clutter, and little ones won’t even mind that you’ve gypped them out of a toy, which by the way are everywhere in some eco-friendly form or another. The soft baskets from 3 Sprouts retail for $38 at
Abesmarket.com. All are made of heavy organic cotton canvas and felt from recycled water bottles.
Speaking of the jillions of water bottles clogging our lives and landfills, the BPA-free reusable plastic Bobble has a clear curvy body, jewel tone sport tops and replaceable carbon water filters in matching colors. A 13-ounce bottle retails for $8.95 and an 18.5-ounce size $9.95. Each filter will last more than 300 uses, the Bobble people estimate.
Got a green thumber to buy for? Boskke’s stoneware ceramic Sky Planters hang upside down from the ceiling. A locking mech-anism and mesh hold the plant and soil in place and an inter-nal reservoir system feeds water gradually to the roots. Smalls sell
for $35 and extra smalls for $25, plants included. “It’s sort of crazy looking and cool,” Loehnen said.
Mounted planters are popular. Woollypocket.com offers Wally, a breathable pocket system lined to protect interior walls for $49 and unlined for exterior use at $39. They can be combined to grow a whole lotta green and come in a variety of colors, mounts included. Also made of recycled plastic bottles.
Plants are pretty gifty for under $50. Etsy is filled with awesome terrariums. Pottingshedcreations.com sells amaryllis and paper-whites bulbs in a bamboo grow box elegantly packaged with a bow for $45.
Great ideas for giving ‘green’ for $50 or less

6 | Thursday, December 9, 2010 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE New Britain Herald | The Bristol Press
The practice of regifting has been the butt of many jokes throughout the years. Some people are known to be serial regifters, and family and friends dread exchanging gifts with these people. However, is it tacky or trendy to give away the items received that can’t be returned or put to good use?
Regifting in a sense is recycling of mer-chandise that may otherwise end up in the garbage. Individuals who are serious about making strides to protect the environment say that regifting is being “green.”
Done with finesse, regifting can be a handy and happy holiday experience. Done the wrong way, however, it is a recipe for family feuds or awkward situations with friends.
Here are some ways to handle regifting in a tactful manner.
■ Only regift items that will have utility for someone else — even if they do not fit into your lifestyle. For example, duplicates of personal appliances or too many baby outfits in one size can be passed on to another.
■ If you’re interested in recycling, regift for the right reasons. Let the recipient know that you’re concerned about saving the planet and are passing on this “new” item to him or her to be environmentally responsible.
■ Do not regift items that have been previously used.
■ Do update the wrapping paper on regifted items. It is still a gift after all.
■ Do not regift outdated items, even if the tags are still in place. It will be an obvi-ous regift if you’re giving away a tie-dyed concert T-shirt from 1986.
■ Don’t regift items that are standard holiday “safe” gifts and ones the recipi-ent probably doesn’t want anyhow. These include boxed cologne or perfume sets that feature knock-offs of designer fragrances, scarves and gloves, bootleg DVDs or video games, random books, or other items that can be purchased from a street vendor.
■ It’s not a good idea to regift food items, either. You run the risk of the food having gone stale. Plus, food gifts -- unless pur-chased for a foodie with specific culinary interests — tend to be tacky to begin with. How many sausage and cheese baskets does one person need?
■ Be sure to regift to a different social circle. That means if you have something from a work friend you may be able to pass it on to a family member. If there is any chance of the previous gift-giver seeing his or her gift used by another person, avoid regifting.
Regifting the right way

It’s the holidays and you’re staring down your gift list when it dawns on you: TV! We’ve all got a die-hard fan of one show or another to buy for, so go for the easy peasy with a screen-inspired gift:
MAD MEN■ You heard about it on the show, now
read it for yourself: “Sterling’s Gold: Wit & Wisdom of an Ad Man,” observations from Roger Sterling Jr. It’s a fresh offering that Grove Press published under the character’s name,
keeping mum about the real writer. A Sterling pearl: “When a man gets to a point in his life when his name’s on the building, he can get an unnatural sense of entitlement.”
■ There’s also the stylish “Mad Men: The Illustrated World” by Dyna Moe from Penguin imprint Perigee Trade. Tips for the perfect bouffant, paper dolls that include Joan, hang-over remedies, inside jokes. Great for the coffee table.
■ For him: Sterling silver tie bar by David Donahue at Nordstrom. Narrow with etched
stripes on the front.■ For her: The gold ruby glass Art Deco bev-
erage set with roly poly glasses at Retroartglass.com, or choose your own ‘60s-inspired martini set from a few notables at Servedraw.com or on eBay.
GLEE■ Glee Karaoke Revolution for Wii. Sing
your faves from the first season, perform with characters from the show, compete against friends, but don’t forget the add-on, the Wii Karaoke Microphone. Cardinal Industries has a
CD board game for all ages, called, um, “Glee, CD Board Game.”
■ The cast has a new Christmas album. “Glee, the Music, the Christmas Album.”
■ There’s a licensed clothing line from T-shirts to tracksuits sold exclusively at Macy’s, but why not wing it with a fun outfit for your fan.Coolspotters.com has some suggestions.
■ Claire’s began selling Glee accessories in September for younger fans. Choose from necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, hats, cos-metics, legwear, bags, wallets and paper goods.

NEW YORK — The list of gifts can be short this year: Fair Isle knits, plaid anything, pea coats, flannel shirts, maybe some skinny-leg cargo pants or something in red. That should cover everyone from grandpa to the kids. It’s the rare occurrence this holiday season that some fashion trends transcend demographics.
“Now that communication is so much faster, trends are quicker and everyone has access to them,” explains Nina Garcia, fashion director at Marie Claire. “All these trends get adapted quickly to men’s, women’s, children’s, and the trends from the celebrities and runways are generalized so quickly for the broader market.”
It helps that many of this year’s
“trends” are largely adaptations of classic, iconic holiday looks, adds Nicole Fischelis, vice president of ready-to-wear at Macy’s. Yet there is a feeling of newness because there feels like more of a high-fashion influence over it all, she says.
“We have a huge statement in plaid — we have special shops for plaid this year. There’s the but-ton-down shirt for men, and the sleeveless quilted vest for women. The Fair Isle, the argyle, the snow-flake are always a part of things, too, but these trends are global.
At Gap, you’ll find a few common threads among all its collections, from Baby Gap to Gap Body. They include faux fur, plaid and sparkle.
Normally, womenswear takes its own trajectory, says Simon Kneen, creative director of Banana Republic, but women’s and men’s styles in
stores right now are simpatico — especially among the wintery Fair Isle knits.
“I think it’s all part of a larger sportswear influence this year — the feeling of outdoors, the coziness of cardigans, the need for warmth,” Kneen says. “As a shopper, it should be easier. You’re looking for unique-ness for everyone, and you can still have that, but when you find these sorts of patterns, you really find the fun of holiday gifts.”
At Kohl’s department stores there are two stories to tell: Fair Isle and utility, which includes the pea coats and cargo pants, as well as work boots and two-pocket flannel shirts.
“In most cases, we merchandise by gender and classification, but as the customer walks the floor this holiday, she’ll see recurring ideas,”
says David Hacker, Kohl’s vice pres-ident of trend and color.
Some years there have been broad color themes or a must-have item that works across categories, but it’s unusual when bona fide trends reach so many people, he says.
Not that everyone should wear these styles the same way. In fact,
says Garcia, they shouldn’t.“It’s all about the mixing and
matching and how you wear things based on your personal style,” she says. “It would be funny to see your husband, your child and yourself all wearing the same trend at the same time, but, trust me, cargo pants will look different on everyone in the family.”
Or, take the plaid shirt. Dad might wear it in a neutral color, loose and layered over a long-sleeve waffle T-shirt, while mom’s should be more fitted in a pretty color — perhaps lavender or yellow — or she can wear it as a tunic over leg-gings, Garcia suggests.
And, Macy’s Fischelis wonders if, at least for the holidays, the fam-ily could be a little matchy-matchy while they have the chance? “I think it’s fun to have one theme.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Whether your loved ones are armchair travelers or real-world travelers, consider one of several of the new travel books out this fall as a gift.
■ Lonely Planet’s “The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World,” $50. The folks at Lonely Planet started with a list of the United Nation’s 192 member countries, then added nearly 40 places that don’t get their own seats at the U.N., like Caribbean islands, Antarctica, Tibet and Taiwan. Each destina-tion gets photos, description, map,
lists of top things to do and see, plus recommendations for ways to experience the place through books, film, food and music.
■ “Where to Go When: Italy,” from DK Eyewitness Travel, $40. Italy remains the fifth most popular international destination for American travelers but when is the best time to go? “January through December,” according to Frances Mayes, author of “Under the Tuscan Sun,” who wrote the foreword for this book, which offers recommendations for every month of the year.
■ National Geographic’s “Drives of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Most Spectacular Trips,” $40. For the wordly road-tripper, this book offers itineraries from U.S. 1 on the coast of Maine or Big Sur in California, to the Silk Road in Central Asia and the outback in Australia. The book is divided into eight chapters by type of trip (such as mountains, coasts, cities, history), each offering a detailed selection of itineraries and top 10 lists.
■ Travel + Leisure’s “Unexpected USA,” $25 (paperback, $15). This book offers great inspiration for
those of us who’d just as soon ferret out unexplored corners and surpris-ing places in the U.S. than fill up the pages of our passport book. A road trip through the Midwest is recommended as a way to see great architecture and design by Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava and Mies van der Rohe on a route that includes Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Other chap-ters look at an into-the-wild trip in Alaska, a barbecue quest from Kansas to North Carolina, and why Walla Walla, Wash., is the “next great wine destination.”

By J.M. HIRSCHassociated press
This holiday season, show your love by showering those you care about with calories.
That’s right. This year I went in search of the most calorifically delicious treats suitable for gift giving. Because face it, when it comes to diets, December isn’t a particularly virtuous time of year. And if we’re going to indulge, it might as well be on the really, really good stuff.
So here is my roundup of some truly wonderful gift-worthy treats.
Norman love ConfectionsThis guy is the Bono of the
chocolate world. And his treats — mostly filled chocolates and truffles — are beyond delicious in a toe curling sort of way. They also are stunningly gorgeous. Artwork sort of gorgeous. So much so you might pause on the way to devouring them.
Love releases new flavors each year. These generally are sold mixed into the general popula-tion of his chocolates, but you can order a special 10-piece box that highlights the 2011 flavors — California honey, hazelnut praline truffle, hot dark chocolate, mango,
peaches and cream, peanut brittle truffle, peanut butter banana, rum cake, sweet tea and tiramisu.
Favorites were California honey and peanut butter banana. The 10-piece box of new flavors can be ordered from his website, http://www.normanloveconfections.com. It sells for $22.
momofuku milk barDavid Chang has developed a
cult-like following for his momo-fuku eateries in New York, and with good reason. His pie and cookie haven known as milk bar serves some almost painfully good treats, such as compost cookies, which contain pretzels, potato
chips, coffee grounds, oats, but-terscotch, chocolate chips and graham crumbs.
Strange, of course. And that’s the point. But so addictively deli.cious. Then there is crack pie, which fills a toasted oat crust with a gooey butter filling made from sugar, brown sugar, cream, egg yolks and vanilla.
Until recently, you needed to be in New York to get these treats. But Chang has launched an online shop — http://momofuku-store.com — from which they can be ordered. Cookies, including the compost variety, sell for $10 for a tin of six. Pies sell for $44.
What to give the people you love who love to eat
