Course Description: This course is a survey of rock music. The focus is on the music, musicians, the sociological, political, and economic conditions merged into the evolution of this art form. This course should give you some of the basic tools by which you may judge and appreciate the development of Rock and Roll from the 1950s to the present. You will become familiar with the most significant artists of each decade/style period and be able to identify their sound. Course Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. Identify representative musical works and musicians from each period 2. Discuss the differences between style periods 3. Understand and discuss social, political and economic issues that affected each style period 4. Write two properly formatted papers on topics assigned by the instructor 5. Pass written tests and listening exams
Special Information:
• This course deals with issues that have impacted Rock and Roll music throughout its history. These issues include racism, drugs and alcohol.
• I will place a strong emphasis on identifying representative works by various artists. Students may need to obtain and listen to musical examples on their own for complete understanding.
Course Outline:

1. Rock and Roll: It’s History and Stylistic Development, 5th ed. Joe Steussy and Scott Lipscomb 2. Pencil, pen, highlighter & notebook paper 3. A binder or notebook for class notes, tests, quizzes, etc.

Classroom Policies: 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Show respect for all people (BE CONSIDERATE)!! 3. Come to class prepared every day (pencil, notebook, positive attitude)! 4. Maintain a clean classroom environment (verbal and physical environment). 5. Participate in all classroom activities (HAVE FUN)!! 6. No food, drinks, or gum in the classroom. 7. Comply with these rules every day. If you cannot:
a. I will discuss your behavior with you. b. I will discuss your behavior with your parents/guardians. c. Your parents, you, and I will discuss your behavior with your counselor or vice principal.
Participation is one of the most important parts of this class. Students who participate will do better in class. If you as an individual are not prepared for class, we as a class will not be able to progress as we would normally if you were prepared for class. Come to class every day ready and willing to learn. Student participation is monitored on a daily basis. If you are frequently absent from class or miss required assignments, your skills cannot be adequately assessed. This will adversely affect your grade. All YVHS policies regarding grading, tardies, absences, truancies, dress code, and academics will be followed. Please learn and follow these policies.
REMEMBER: YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO LEARN AND I HAVE THE RIGHT TO TEACH. Classroom Procedures for Success: Follow these procedures to ensure your success in this class!
1. Make sure your cell phone is OFF before class begins. 2. Bring all necessary materials with you to each class. These include the following:
a. Pencil, pen & highlighter b. Assigned textbook (please treat it with care!!) c. Your class binder/notebook
3. Students who receive call slips will be released at the instructor’s discretion. 4. I will dismiss the class, not the bell. Please do not prepare to leave until instructed to do so. 5. The dress code will be enforced. Please dress appropriately. 6. Students are expected to remain quiet for attendance. If you cannot do so, your behavior will be discussed with you
after class. 7. Please clean up and throw away any trash after class. (Recycle to help the Music Department!) 8. Have fun during class, pay attention, and enjoy listening to and learning about the greatest music in the world!
