Hillside detectives investigate bank robberyHillside Police are investi-

gating a bank robbery thatoccurred Feb. 14 at 4:57 p.m. onLiberty Avenue. The LusitaniaBank was robbed by a suspectwho handed a teller a black bagand a threatening note thatdemanded money. The tellercomplied and put an estimated$5,000 into the bag and returnedit to the man. The suspect thenturned and left the bank, walk-ing east on Fitzpatrick Street.

The suspect was described asa white male about 23 years old,about 6 feet tall with pale com-plexion, freckles and browneyes. He was wearing a coldweather facemask, a blackNorth Face jacket, and blackpants. If anyone has any infor-mation about the identity of thesubject or this incident they areasked to call the Hillside PoliceDetective Bureau at 973-926-5800.

This incident is being jointlyinvestigated by the Hillsidepolice detective bureau and theFBI.

Clark• Kemar Cameron, 23, of

Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested onFeb. 10 at 2:40 p.m. on CentralAvenue for credit card fraud. Thearrest was made by Officer BrianRenda.

• Thomas Will, 46, of Linden,was arrested on Feb. 13 at 8:44p.m. in the vicinity of North StilesStreet in Linden for shopliftingmerchandise from ShopRite Super-market in Clark. He was alsocharged with eluding police andresisting arrest. The arrest wasmade by Officer Christian Lott.

Cranfortl• Daniel Gold, 25, of Freehold

was arrested on Feb. 10 at 1:15 a.m.on Raritan Road.

A 1999 Pontiac Grand Am wasstopped for erratic driving on Rari-tan Road. During the course of the

investigation, police located twosuspected marijuana cigarettes inthe possession of Gold, who wasthe passenger. He was arrested forpossession of marijuana and pos-session of paraphernalia. The driv-er, a 27-year-old male from How-ell, was issued a summons for fail-ure to maintain a lane and releasedat the scene.

• Yolanda Watson, 42, of SouthPlainfield was arrested on Feb. 11at 1:08 a.m. on Raritan Road. A2005 BMW was stopped for driv-ing in the opposing traffic lanes onRaritan Road westbound after turn-ing from Centennial Avenue. Afteran investigation at the scene, police.arrested the driver, Watson, forallegedly driving while intoxicatedand failure to keep right.

• James Smith, 21, of Elizabeth;Robert Schaarschmidt, 20, of Cran-ford and Robert Backof, 22, ofCranford were arrested on Feb. 11at 1:46 a.m. at 6 South Ave. West.

The three subjects were arrestedwhen police responded to a reportof people observed leaving thebuilding that formerly housedBlockbuster Video. It was deter-mined that the three arrested sub-jects had entered through an unse-cured door.

At the time of the arrest, it didnot appear that any property wasstolen or damaged during the inci-dent. All three subjects wereprocessed and charged with crimi-nal trespass.

• Ronald Hill, 45, of Newarkwas arrested on Feb. 12 at 8:15p.m. at Centennial Avenue and Rar-itan Road.

A 2004 Mercedes Benz was.stopped for having an inoperablebrake light. A rear seat passenger inthe vehicle was observed to have anopen container of alcohoi in hispossession. During the course ofthe encounter, this person provideda false name and false identifyinginformation to police. Furtherinvestigation revealed the samepassenger, later identified as Hill,to be in possession of a suspectedmarijuana "blunt." He was arrestedand charged with possession ofmarijuana, possession of parapher-nalia and hindering apprehension.

Hill was also cited for having anopen container of suspected alcoholand failure to wear a seatbelt. The'driver, Scott Brown, 21, of Newarkand the front seat passenger,Mitchell Coleman, 22, of EastOrange were both arrested for out-standing traffic warrants fromEssex County. Brown was issuedsummonses for suspended licenseand maintenance of lamps.

• Tyler Miller, 18, of Linden and.loshual Thomas, 19, of Rahwaywere arrested on Feb. 12 at 12:37a.m. at Raritan Road and CoiemanAvenue.

According to reports, a 1995Acura Integra was stopped for seat-belt violations. After a brief investi-gation at the scene, police recov-ered a partially-smoked, suspectedmarijuana cigar and a small bag ofsuspected marijuana. The driver,Miller, and front seat passenger,Thomas, were arrested for posses-sion of marijuana and possession ofdrug paraphernalia. Miller was alsocited for possession of controlleddangerous substance in a motorvehicle and Thomas was cited forfailure to wear seatbelt.

Linden• Carlos A. Carvajal, 47, of Eliz-

abeth, was arrested on Feb. 14 at7:44 p.m. in connection with ashoplifting incident at Kohl'sDepartment Store.

A loss prevention officerinformed police that he observed anindividual, later identified, as Car-vajal, grab five bottles of men'scologne and walk into the dressingroom. When he emerged from thedressing room, the security officerno longer observed the cologne.The suspect then walked out of thestore to the parking lot. The lossprevention officer1 confronted Car-vajal, who took off running throughthe parking lot and onto South ParkAvenue.

Responding police officersobserved Carvajal on the corner ofSouth Park Avenue and East LindenAvenue and detained him until hewas identified as the shoplifter by.security. Officers then re-tracedCarvajaPs path of flight and locatedthe five bottles of cologne, valuedat about $273, discarded near someshrubs adjacent to the TGI FridaysRestaurant. Carvajal was arrestedand charged with shoplifting.

• At 3:26 p.m. on Feb. 16, a col-lision occurred involving a schoolbus and motorcycle'at the intersec-tion of Route 27 and Nora Drive inLinden.

A 2003 GMC Blue Bird yellowschool bus owned by George Drap-per Inc. of Iselin and operated byRonnie A Harmon, 54, of Plain-field, was traveling eastbound onRoute 27 and attempted to make aright turn from the left lane ontoNora Drive.

A 2009 Yamaha YZF motorcy-cle operated by Alexander Daza,26, of Roselle was traveling east-bound on Route 27 in the right lanewhen he collided with the passen-ger side front of the bus. The driverwas ejected from the bike and land-ed under the bus near the rearwheels. There were no passengerson the bus other than an aide, Eve-lyn Brown, 77 of South Plainfield.Neither the driver nor the aide wereinjured.

Daza, who was wearing anapproved helmet, was transportedby NorthStar medevac to Universi-ty Hospital for internal injuries.

Harmon was issued a summonsfor careless driving and Daza wasissued a summons for an unregis-

tered and uninsured motor vehicle.• Victor Jackson, 50, and Ronald

Yvone McLeod, 45, both ofNewark, was arrested on Feb. 12 at10:08 p.m.

Police responded to the ConocoPhillips Refinery on South ParkAvenue on a report of trespasserson the property.

Officers spoke to a securityguard who said she observed twomales with hoods and dark clothingenter the refinery property from anaccess gate near the N.J. Turnpike.These individuals fled when theyobserved the guard in her vehicle.Police responded to the area of theTurnpike Entrance and observedthe males fleeing along the fenceline. The suspects were ordered tostop at gunpoint and complied.

Jackson and McLeod wereplaced under arrest and chargedwith burglary and criminal mis-chief. It was later discovered thatthe suspects used boltcutters to gainaccess to the property through thefence. The suspects may have beenattempting to steal scrap metalfrom the property.

The arrest was made by OfficersPaul Zack and Ian Conk. The inves-tigation is being continued by theDetective Bureau and the Counter-Terrorism Unit.

Elizabeth, was arrested on Feb. 1 at12:23 p.m. on Summit Avenue atBroad Street for contempt of court.

26, of Paterson, was arrested onFeb. 2 at midnight at Summit policeheadquarters for theft of moveableproperty.

• Eric D. Williams, 43, of Pater-son, was arrested on Feb. 2 at 6:58a.m. at the railroad station for tres-passing.

• Frank H. Popola, 52, of Union,was arrested on Feb. 2 at midnightat Summit police headquarters forpossession of suspected heroin.

• Vonetta S. Sterling, 30, ofPlainfield, was arrested on Feb. 3 at3:29 p.m. at Summit police head-quarters for contempt of court.

• Jasmin Koljenovic, 30, ofPlainfield, was arrested on Feb. 4 at11:42 a.m. for using a cellularphone while driving, driving with asuspended license, and failure toexhibit a driver's license.

• Stanley A. Udoh, 35, of Sum-mit, was arrested on Feb. 5 for driv-ing while intoxicated.

• Dam ion G. Stewart, 26, ofOrange, was arrested on Feb. 7 at10:11 a.m. at Franklin Place forcontempt of court.

Union• Pierre N. Dorvihna, 23, of

Union was arrested on Feb. 13 at9:06 p.m. on Colonial Avenue andwas charged with obstruction ofjustice. Dorvilma was placed underarrest during an investigation afterrefusing to follow police instruc-tions as well as providing officerswith false information. The arrestwas made by Police OfficerChristopher Conners.

• Victoria A. Jimenez, 21, ofUnion was arrested on Feb. 11 at11:32 p.m. on Oregon Street andwas charged with obstruction ofjustice. Jimenez was placed underarrest. During the course of aninvestigation, she allegedly pushedofficers and attempted to close adoor on them. She also resistedarrest by flailing her arms and kick-ing. The arrest was made by PoliceOfficer Keith Brochu.

• Michael M. Guirguis, 26, ofBayonne was arrested on Feb. 12 at4:50 a.m. on Chestnut Street andKawameeh Drive and was chargedwith driving under the influenceand resisting arrest. The arrest wasmade by. Police Officer NicholasKatsock.

• Jonathan W. Protopapas, 32, ofUnion was arrested on Feb. 13 at7:17 p.m. on Grove Road and wascharged with unlawful possessionof weapons. Protopapas was arrest-ed outside of his residence afterbeing found to have been in posses-sion of a metal pipe during an argu-ment in the street while allegedlyexhibiting disorderly conduct.
