Highlights of His Childhood His full name:

Anthony Mary Adjutor John Claret y Clara

Born on Dec. 23, 1807 in Sallent, Spain

Parents: Juan Claret and Josefa Clara

He was 5th of 11 children.

His father owned a small textile factory, but was not rich.

Highlights of His Childhood His sister Rosa taught

him how to pray especially praying the rosary.

Because of his great devotion to Mary, whom he considered his mother, he added our Blessed Mother’s name to his.

When he was about eleven years old, a bishop visited his school and asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Without hesitation he responded: "A priest."

Highlights of His Childhood

1825-1829 – Began to work as an apprentice weaver

At age 17, he was sent to Barcelona to learn more about the textile business.

He did so well in the textile industry, but felt empty despite his worldly achievements.

The Gospel Verse That Changed his Life

A Missionary and Apostle September 29, 1829

– entered the seminary of Vich

June 13, 1835 – he was ordained as priest.

June 1839-1850 – volunteers to be sent to Catalonia and the Canary Islands as an Apostolic Missionary

A Congregation is Born July 16, 1849 –

establishes the CMF (Cordis Mariae Filiae) or the congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary together with five other priests.

The Virtuous Bishop August 3, 1849

– nominated Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba

October 6, 1850 – consecrated as Archbishop of Cuba.

Confessor to the Queen June 5, 1857 –

officially appointed as Confessor to Queen Isabella II of Spain

These were the most painful years of his life as the enemies of the Church directed all kinds of slander and personal ridicule.

May 31, 1870 - defends the dogma of papal infallibility in the halls of Vatican I

Persecution, Exile and Death

In 1868, a revolution broke out in Spain which dethroned the Queen of Spain, and sent her family into exile.

August 6, 1870 – persecuted, he seeks refuge at the Cistercian monastery of Fontfroide, France

October 24, 1870 – Claret dies after a lingering sickness which had lasted for weeks.

Declared as a Saint February 25,

1934 – Claret was beatified by Pope Pius XI

May 7, 1950 – declared a saint by Pope Pius XII
