The Hero Archetype

What is an archetype?

An ideal model upon which all

others are based

A universal pattern that occurs in

cultures around the world.

Archetypal Heroes

What do they have in common?

Unusual circumstances surround birth

Separated from home or family

Unsure of their purpose

Home isolated or more humble than

birthright

Feels different or isolated from peers

Coming of Age: Refusal followed by

acceptance

The hero goes on a journey

A life-changing event

leads to the journey

The journey can be physical, spiritual or philosophical

The journey results in the hero finding

their purpose

Every hero has a weakness or flaw

The hero must prove themselves

The Unhealable Wound

The hero encounters evil and

suffers

Special Weapon

Can only be wielded by the

hero

The hero can use it differently than

others

Is a character who possesses some of these qualities a

hero?

Yes; sometimes heroes only have

some of these qualities
