Church and the world – a necessary dialogue
• Traditionally the Catholic Church sees itself in
contrast to the "world". In fact, a distinction is
important. But dualism poisons the gospel and
paralyzes the church. What is needed is genuine
dialogue, characterized by a willingness to listen
and learn.

Bishops between autarky and collegiality
• The Quaestio presents current historical research
on the episcopate and the church synods from
Classical Antiquity to the present day. One focus is
the previously neglected area of tension between
individual and collegial responsibility of individual
bishops.

Growing approval and open questions
• In 1999, the Lutheran World Federation and the
Pontifical Council for Promoting Christin Unity
signed the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of

the Reformation period. 20 years later the volume
illuminates its reception and names desiderata for

• Viewed from a Christian, Jewish and Islamic

religion can the state tolerate? How much state
can religion tolerate? Are they compatible?

Michael Seewald
Reform – the same church, but different thoughts
• The Catholic Church is under unprecedented
pressure to change. The list of issues is long:
women's rights, same-sex partnerships, lay
ministry. These demands have a subversive sound
only because the reform discourse is set in a
dogmatically narrow framework. Michael Seewald
exposes this framework. It becomes apparent that
the church can reform itself and at the same time
remain in essence Catholic.

Eberhard Schockenhoff
Peace on earth?
• Christmas as a provocation
• What would be missing if there were no Christmas? The author interprets Christmas as a protest against the political theology of the Roman Empire. This interpretation brings to life the provocative nuances that were clearly audible at that time: a protest against violence, a cry for justice, and a longing for peace. But isn't the Christmas story of the divine Prince of Peace in the stable too good to be true? And what does the unredeemed hope of Christmas mean in a world without peace?

Ulrich LükeThe creed and current needs
• Are the creeds, which developed from the Ancient
Church and which are still in use today, only of
interest to ancient historians? Do we still need
such an antiquated wording? The creeds bear the
handwriting of their time and the scars of past
religious disputes, yet they still form the basis of
our faith today. Ulrich Lüke makes this treasure of
the past accessible to the present without
intellectual loss.

The secret of the Galilean
• Talks into the night on Jesus of Nazareth
• Two people are discussing the questions: Who was
Jesus? What did he want? Their conversation
continues through the night. Did Jesus see himself
as a teacher? A prophet? As the Messiah? The
answer is to be found in the succinct and often
provocative words of Jesus, in his parables, in his
actions and gestures. Gerhard Lohfink inspires the
reader with the power and beauty of Jesus' words.

Marriage and heaven
• Woman and man in Early Christianity
• In Jesus' proclamation he is vehemently opposed
to discrimination. Women are co-responsible not
only for the Easter message, but also for the
development of Christology. Berger's
interpretation of Ephesians 5 is the climax of this
book: Conjugal love is a pattern and model for the
relationship of the Messiah to the people of God.
Berger cautiously and provocatively draws links
from the New Testament to sexual ethics of the
future.

Jesus of Galilee – Messiah and God's Son
• A central thought of Helmut Hoping's is the Son of
God becoming man in Jewish flesh. Hoping
examines the history of early research on Jesus, his
life and the Christological development of
doctrine. He approaches the mystery of Jesus
through incarnation, corporeality, the freedom of
Jesus, the salvific significance of his death and the
question of God's ability to suffer. He also looks at
Judaism and the Islamic image of God and Jesus in
the Koran as well as the position of Mohammed.

One God for all
• The sending out to world mission in the Acts of the
Apostles
• "One God for All' is the great project of Early
Christianity, without which worldwide Christianity
would not exist today. Mission, however, is a
frequently misused term. The Acts of the Apostles
provide important clarification here: Mission is a
journey of discovery. It is an invitation to bear witness
humbly, following in Jesus' footsteps: able to provide
teaching and being willing to learn, being open and
receptive, with a love of freedom and a love for
mankind, living a life pleasing to God.

Theory of epistemology from an encounter with God
• Theory of epistemology from an encounter with God
• The book outlines an ethic of theological thought from an encounter with God. How should theologians "think"and "reflect"? The "theological landscape sketches" follow the structure of the Lord's Prayer and interpret 49 biblical passages in epistemological terms. The author develops a theological cognitive ethic from the dialogue between philosophical epistemology and biblical texts. Theological thinking is presented not only as thinking about God, but also as thinking before God and thinking towards God. This results in normative structures for theological reflection.

• On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the 1st Vatican Council, this book provides historical orientation and describes the development of this controversial Council. The author looks at the bigger historical picture of theology and the church. For example: the effects of the revolutions since 1979, Ultramontanism, the development of a specifically Roman theology. The long shadow of the 1. Vatican Council
• How the council continues to obstruct the church today.
• The 1st Vatican Council was characterized by the
rejection of modern philosophy and science. In these it
saw a destructive individualism and liberalism which
were viewed as the basic evils of modern society. They
strove to overcome these through authority and
obedience. Conservative circles tried and failed to define
their original principles in the build up to the Second
Vatican Council. They did not fully succed and the II
Council opened up the church to the world. However, it
also repeated controversial statements from the First
Vatican Council. As a result, the tradition of 1869/70 had
a powerful effect on the official reception of the Second
Vatican Council, right up to the present.

Markus Vinzent
Open beginning
• The development of Christianity in the 2nd century
• On the premise that early Christianity was not
interested in a historical representation of its
beginnings, Vinzent gains fundamental insights
that question previous theories. The earliest
witnesses are neither the Gospels nor the Acts of
the Apostles, nor Paul's letters. They are
apocryphal writings. The first Christian theologians
were not interested in historically documenting
the person of Jesus of Nazareth nor the beginnings
of Christianity, but in using "historical" recourse as
an anti-heretic weapon.

Each Good Friday at the hour of Jesus' death the stigmata were accompanied by an ecstatic experience. Why we can look forward to the future
• Against the temptation of being a victim
• Should we cultivate a nostalgic longing for the past out of fear for the future? Or should we allow ourselves to look forward to the future and aim for what is possible? Fear of the future can paralyze us, making us remain victims of the situation. If we proactively shape our future, we open up the possibility to change and adopt a more positive outlook. Verena Kast encourages us to reject the "craving for the past", after all, there is a life before death!

Painful separation and new beginning
• "We have all experienced separation in some form
or other and have felt the suffering, pain, anger
and grief that go with it. We suffer particularly
when relationships break up: our fundamental

with feelings of shame and guilt. The author
advises us not to dwell on such thoughts and
remain bogged down in the past, but to learn from
our experiences, find a new direction in our lives
and turn an end in to a new beginning.

A matter of justice
• Stop land speculation
• Affordable housing is the social issue of our time. Prices are rising and political measures, such as the rent brake, are a blunt sword in the fight against the seemingly unstoppable rise in housing prices. Massive speculation with rising land prices has led to an increase in building land prices of 1900 percent throughout Germany. For decades, Hans-Jochen Vogel has been fighting for a land rights reform for decades. His new book puts the subject of social justice back right at the top of the political agenda.

Stauffenberg - my grandfather was not an assassin
• The assassination of Claus von Stauffenberg on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 is one of the most important dates in recent German history. Von Stauffenberg himself and his failed attempt to stop the National Socialist madness have become a myth, the memory is ritualized. Sophie von Bechtolsheim talks about the many Stauffenbergpictures that she has encountered during her life -in science, in the media, in the family. She asks how Stauffenberg and the other protagonists of July 20 can still be or become role models. And she asks herself how responsibility and guilt are related and how much we value freedom today
