He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”

Fear and Faith both depend on a future that

HASN’T HAPPENED YET.

SIN (Genesis 3)

“Sin is what you do when you are not

fully satisfied in God.“

–John Piper

Root of all sin:1st Commandment: No Other Gods

We fear God… and our gods! What are our idols?

“That to which we give the highest good in our lives..” -Luther

Idolatry is what you do when you are not fully satisfied in God.

If only _____________, then I would be happy, fulfilled, and

secure.I will do anything to get

________.What do I want to preserve or

avoid?

What do I fear?

You fear the “opposite” of your idol.

If you must have control, you fear losing control and unpredictability. If you must have acceptance, you fear rejection. If you must have recognition, you fear being overlooked. If you must have food, you fear hunger or limited choices.

If you must have a perfect appearance, you fear gaining weight or wrinkles. If you must have all A’s, you fear poor grades or mediocre performance. If you must have comfort, you fear hard work.If you must have money, you fear poverty.

When anything but God becomes our “idol”, our greatest fear is

not having it.
