THE HAUNTED NEW ORLEANS - French Quarter - WALKING TOUR
A Parajunkee.com Adventure | 1
Hotel Monteleone 214 Royal St
The Hotel Monteleone can claim being one of the most haunted hotels in North America. Elevators stop on the wrong floor; children heard laughing in the hallway; chilly spots and guests getting lost as they wander down the wrong way. Most incidents that have been reported originate from the 14th floor. The hotel is alleged to be haunted by more than a dozen ghosts, most of them former employees and former guests. Stop in the Carousel Bar and ask the bartender if he’s ever encountered William Wildemere, a former guest of the hotel who has never left.

Welcome to New Orleans! What is more naturally New Orleans than a good ghost story? In this city, we have thousands of ghost stories probably because it is one of the oldest cities in this nation and has a very diverse and macabre history. New Orleans is ripe with the dead and maybe, you can catch a glimpse of some of that history with just a quick walk around the French Quarter, or Quarter, as locals call it.
Ready to start this tour? Okay here we go….leave the convention hotel, the Marriott on Canal Street, and take a right. Our first stop is Chartres St. Once you get to Iberville, make a left and head toward Rampart (away from the River).
Walk down Iberville toward Rampart until you get to Bourbon, make a right and then a left when you get to Bienville. Soon, you’ll be right in front of Arnauds.

Arnaud’s Restaurant 813 Bienville Ave
Arnaud’s is a New Orleans tradition. The bar dates back to the 1700s. Stop and grab a bite or just take a peek. Say hello to the host. If he has time, I betcha he has a few ghost stories. He might even tell you about the original owner, Count Arnaud, the man who wears a tuxedo and shows up in the middle of the restaurant smiling over the people that are eating. The restaurant also has a few ghosts that tend to show up in the bar to drink and carry on along with a female ghost dressed in her Sunday’s best and who just disappears. Don’t be shy about chatting up wait staff, hosts, or bartenders, in New Orleans. We all love to tell stories.
Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 425 Basin St
The St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is said to hold the grave of New Orleans’ own voodoo queen Marie Laveau and is New Orleans’ oldest existing burial ground. The St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is one creepy place with brick piles where graves once stood and worn down marble faces. Most of the graves are crumbling. And if you find Laveau’s tomb, you’ll see offerings left on her grave-site, some by curious tourists, others by practitioners of Voodoo that still revere the long dead priestess. The cemetery was founded in 1789 and a lot of the graves are still intact. Though it is said that over 100K bodies have been buried in the cemetery, the graveyard is only one city block wide. It is whispered that Marie Laveau herself haunts the graveyard appearing each year on
Continue down Bienville all the way to Rampart (about 4 blocks) and cross to the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Watch out, Rampart & Basin are busy streets.

St. John’s Eve. You’ll know her by the handkerchief she wears around her neck. Visitors have claimed to have been assaulted, slapped, and tripped, within the one block area of raised tombs. I also must insist that you do not visit this cemetery at night. Every native New Orleanian knows that it isn’t only the ghosts you have to worry about in this cemetery. There are some shady living beings that also haunt the graves preying on tourists that wander in after dark.
Hermann-Grima House820 St. Louis St
Located at 820 St. Louis Street, the Herman-Grima house was built in 1831 and is considered one of the top 10 haunted houses in the city. The house is currently in use as a museum, my cousin actually works there as one of the museum’s curators and will tell us stories about weird happenings and how most of the staff will not work alone. The house has been completely renovated and all the ghosts seem to be at peace within the house. Most of the spirits are considered to be from the house’s origin. It is reported that the ghosts will sprinkle lavender and rose around the front parlor and will light fires during the winter. American Horror Story, Coven, was shot at this location.
Cross Rampart and head down Conti, heading toward the River. Make a left on Dauphine and then a right on Saint Louis. The Hermann-Grima house is on your right.

Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre 616 St Peter StNew Orleans’ Le Petite Theatre is haunted by a ghost called Caroline, who will help employees of the theater find missing objects. It is reported, if you ask her directly where something is, you’ll find it sitting in the middle of the aisle when you come back. Caroline was an actress who fell from the balcony while “engaging with her director.” She was dressed for her performance in a white wedding gown. There are also a few other ghosts, the Captain, who is seen during rehearsals by the actors as he watches from “his seat” in the balcony. The other is known as Sigmund, who was a stage carpenter and plays “pranks” on the set.
St. Louis CathedralThe cathedral you see is not the original cathedral. It is the third building constructed on the spot from having been destroyed twice before, once in a hurricane in 1722, and the second by the fire of 1788, called “The Good Friday Fire” that destroyed most of the French Quarter. It is reported that the ghost of Pere Antoine, a friar that served the poor, but also tried to establish an “Inquisition” in New Orleans, is still making his way throughout the church. The ghost of Pere Antoine is recognizable because he still wears the garb of the Capuchin (think typical monk garb, but black not brown, and sandals) and sports a white beard. The ghost of Pere Antoine is so widely reported and seen outside of the cathedral that some devout Catholics claim that he is a saint and still walks the Earth. Most of his sightings are interactions, catching women that trip in the streets, taking cigars and watching the children’s choir perform. You can see Pere Antoine’s portrait in the cathedral’s vestibule. It is also reported that the cathedral is haunted by other priestly ghosts, including Pere Dagobert, another Capuchin monk. The towers and the organ loft are considered some of the most haunted areas of the church.
Cross Saint Ann to Muriel’s, you can’t miss it.

Keep on walking down Saint Louis until you get to Charters and then make a left. You’ll see the Cathedral looming ahead of you. But, before you get to the Cathedral, make a left on Saint Peter’s and look up at the pretty facade of Le Petit Theatre…
Now walk across the street to the Cathedral. Depending on the hour, you might be able to poke your head into the Cathedral, but she is a beauty to just look at from across the way in the area of Jackson Square.

Haunted Bars in New Orleans:
1. Pat O’Brien’s - Known as Pat O’s to locals, the piano bar and upstairs ladies room are haunted.
2. The Bourbon Pub - Known as The Pub to locals, patrons have reported being “hit on the bottom of the foot” in an odd recreation of an S&M technique called Bastinado.
3. Alibi Bar - Not a recommended stop on the tour, this is a DIVE. Patrons have reported silverware and glassware flying off the bar.
4. O’Flaherty’s - A ghost dubbed Angelique can be seen peering down from the balcony.
5. The Dungeon - Does not open until midnight and is one of NOLAs most extreme bars. The bar is rumored to be owned by an actual vampire. Rumors of haunting might just be a marketing ploy.
Muriel’s Jackson Square 801 Chartres St
Muriel’s is said to be haunted by several “harmless” ghosts. Most of the activity comes from what is called the Seance Lounge, which is open for private parties in the upstairs area of Muriel’s. The ghosts knock on the walls and a woman’s voice is heard now and again. Downstairs in the Courtyard Bar at times glass is flung from off the bar to shatter on the wall. There is another ghost the owners consider to be Pierre Antoine Lepadi Jourdan, the man who restored the property after the Good Friday fire. Jourdan’s ghost is said to appear as a sparkly light that likes to hang out in the lounge and move objects around.
Bourbon Orleans Hotel 717 Orleans St
Before the Bourbon Orleans was a hotel, it was the historic Orleans Ballroom and Theater and then later converted into a convent in the late 1800s. Like the Hotel Monteleone, the Bourbon Orleans hotel is ranked as one of the most haunted hotels in New Orleans and has been featured on psychic reality shows. The specific entities that haunt this hotel include a confederate soldier that haunts the 3rd and 6th floor along with a few nuns and children.
The Yellow Fever epidemic hit the area when the hotel was the convent and a large amount of children died at this location. A small girl child has been reported on the 6th floor playing with her ball. A nun is said to haunt room 644. There are also reports of a lonely dancer that twirls under the ballroom’s chandelier and hides behind the curtains.
Head North past Bourbon, the Sultan’s Palace will be on the left on the corner of Dauphine and Orleans.
Head down St Ann to Royal, make a left and a quick right on Orleans.

THE GARDETTE-LAPRETE HOUSE 716 Dauphine St
The ghost of the sultan is one of the most famous New Orleans French Quarter ghosts. The murdered Turk is still said to wander the halls of the four-story house that he occupied before he was brutally murdered.Visitors and residents of the home have reported hearing the “tinkle of Oriental music” and the odor of incense floating around the house. Residents have also reported hearing shrill screams coming from different parts of the home. The sultan himself is the main player of this particular haunting though. He is seen walking around the house looking confused and often seen by onlookers from the sidewalk below as he peers out of the windows. He is distinguished by his foreign “oriental” dress.
Cafe Lafitte in Exile 901 Bourbon StCafe Lafitte in Exile is well-known, or more appropriately renown, as one of the oldest gay bars in the country. Because of its longstanding gay patronage, the ghosts that haunt this establishment are said to be gay also, including a poltergeist-type spirit dubbed Mr. Bubbly. Mr. Bubbly likes to pinch guests on the petunia and loves to wave at tourists from the balcony. The bar is also said to be haunted by a few famous ghosts, specifically, playwriter Tennessee Williams and author Truman Capote. Williams can be spotted in his usual spot at the far end of the bar and Capote is often spotted in the stairwell looking to chat it up.
Head East on Dauphine and make a right on Dumaine St. Corner of Bourbon & Dumaine.

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop 941 Bourbon St
Lafitte’s Blacksmith shop looks out of place from the buildings that surround it. Yes, it sports the traditional New Orleans shutters, but that is about the only traditional look about it. The squat two-story building is just a little plain house in the middle of grand French Quarter homes and businesses. But the building, while plain, is considered the oldest structure in New Orleans, reportedly constructed in the early 1700s The building is one of only a few of the original French structures remaining in the Quarter.
The building, now a bar, got its name because it was once owned by the pirate, Jean Lafitte, and was his blacksmith shop until he was run out of the area by the authorities. Since you can go in Lafitte’s and poke around, look into the fireplace, which is said to be the focal point of many occurrences, and dark hauntings, according to staff and patrons. Lafitte has also been spotted sitting in the back drinking his favorite beverage and smoking a cigar. If you smell cigar smoke, Lafitte is nearby.
Hotel Provincial 1024 Chartres StThe Hotel Provincial is a lovely, upscale hotel in the heart of the French Quarter. The hotel is made up of five buildings that each have a lengthy history of their own.
Some of the buildings were used as a Civil War Confederate Hospital where many soldiers died from their war wounds. Building 500 is said to have the most manifestations of hauntings. The building is said to be haunted by soldiers from the 18th and 19th century.
Guests have reported seeing the horrendous view of the military hospital for just a second when the elevator opens to the second floor. Ghostly doctors and patients are seen often reaching for help and moaning their distress to guests.
Hotel Provincial has been named one of the top ten haunted hotels in the U.S.

The Beauregard-Keyes House 1113 Chartres St
General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was a Civil War general in disgrace. Thousands died under his command and he was forced to retreat. The battlefield is said to still haunt his residence and owners have reported seeing General Beauregard himself in full Civil War dress whispering “Shiloh” the name of the battle that disgraced him.The house has been in existence since 1826 and the Confederate General occupied the home from 1865-66, not a long time, but enough to make quite an impression on the home. An actual battle is supposed to recreate itself in the main hall of the house described as “Men with mangled limbs and blown-away faces swirl in a confused dance of death,” by Victor C. Klein, a New Orleans ghost author. But current museum employees claim these accounts are merely an author’s fantasies and the house is actually only haunted by a few friendly spirits including the spirits of a few animals that don’t want to leave their old home.

The LaLaurie Mansion1140 Royal St
Our tour ends at the LaLaurie Mansion. This is THE haunted destination in New Orleans. The LaLaurie Mansion has one of the most sordid and macabre histories, tales of murder, death, torture, and mutilations, all by one couple, the LaLauries. The LaLauries were part of the social elite of New Orleans in the 19th century culture and were celebrated until their extracurricular activities were discovered.
After the couple was forced by a lynch mob to flee their home, the mansion has become a few different venues, a saloon, a girl’s school, music conservatory, apartment building, and furniture store. The home has been owned by actor Nicolas Cage and is now currently a private residence.
Agonized screams have been heard coming from the home along with the figure of a slave girl running across the roof have been seen. Attacks by ghosts have also been reported. Black men in chains that grab for you as you pass, a matron woman standing above a baby’s crib. The property is said to be cursed and everyone that has owned it supposedly ends in ruin, for example, Nicolas Cage’s current career and subsequent bankruptcy even the LaLaurie house was taken from him by the bank.
There have been reports of the current caretakers of the house getting repeated phone calls from the main house’s number even though the number was disconnected after Cage lost the home to foreclosure. The maids have also reported seeing the shape of a body pressed into the duvet right after they made the beds in the morning. Most residents of the house do not stay long. g

Thank you for participating in the Haunted New Orleans French Quarter tour created just for the RT Convention New Orleans attendees. The tour was created by New Orleans native, and blogger, Rachel Rivera who owns and operates the site, parajunkee.com. Besides being obsessed with Paranormal and Urban Fantasy reads, Rachel is also quite obsessed with non-fiction paranormal, ghost stories, and New Orleans history. Her obsession was fueled after living in a haunted house for almost three years. Living with a ghost that would regularly make itself known by opening cabinets, knocking on doors, and physically assaulting any adolescent visitors, does wonders to fuel an obsession.Rachel put this book together because she has taken a few haunted tours that only visit a small percentage of the haunted sites in the Quarter. By doing it yourself, you can see all of the Quarter’s most notorious haunted locations and take your time while doing it. If you appreciate this Walking Tour, make sure to support the advertisers, because without them, this book would not have been printed.

His assistant, Biddy Gunter, doesn’t seem affected, and Danny starts to think he’s going crazy—until he gets a visit from his mother, who suggests that Danny’s uncanny talent to sell old houses may stem from his family’s psychic inheritance.
When Biddy reveals to Danny her own strange dream about the carriage house ghosts, they team up to investigate and discover both the house’s dark history and their own unexpected attraction. But as the hauntings turn from unsettling to downright dangerous, Danny and Biddy need to figure out how to rid the house of its ghostly inhabitants, before their budding romance meets an untimely end…
