Bus users decorate the bus for couple’s special dayBus users decorate the bus for couple’s special dayBus users decorate the bus for couple’s special dayBus users decorate the bus for couple’s special dayBus users decorate the bus for couple’s special day
When the CATT bus picked up Ivor
and Joyce Evans at the end of June
for their regular shopping trip to
ASDA Whitchurch they were
delighted to see that the bus was
decorated with balloons and
banners saying ‘happy diamond
wedding anniversary’.
Joyce and Ivor were touched by
everyone’s efforts and say that for
them, catching the CATT bus is a
sociable, friendly occasion.
Benefits of catching the CATT bus
The CATT bus helps people like Joyce
and Ivor who can’t access public
transport by picking them up by their
door, where possible.
But this is more than just getting from
A to B to get the shopping in, no matter
how essential these activities are.
These trips keep social networks alive,
helping to combat loneliness.
Lessons learned over sixty years
Have Joyce and Ivor got any advice
for couples on how to make it to their
Diamond Wedding Anniversary?
“I’d say give and take, not take it all
from one side. And take the good with
the bad,” says Joyce.
And seeing this lovely couple in their
home, I’d say there has been plenty of
good times for them to enjoy.
Helping people get around
CATT community bus runs trips for all
ages to places of activity such as shops
and the South Bristol NHS Community
Hospital for people who find it difficult
to access public transport.
Whoops! The last wham! featured a
cover picture of Mayor George
Ferguson by the CATT bus. We name
checked everyone except the fantastic
volunteer driver Colin Holbrow who
drove George that day. Sorry Colin.

Come and have a look at the
Room 13 Gromit titled ‘Pass the
Gromit, Cheese!’ in Hartcliffe
Library.
Room 13 Hareclive is an artists’
studio run by young people for young
people based at Hareclive Academy.
Gromit was given to Room 13 by The
John James Bristol Foundation.
The idea came from 11 year old
researcher Jack who wanted people
to try and guess how many pieces of
cheese they can spot - the colourful
triangles represent cheeses.
Gromit Unleashed Trail
The trail of 80 large Gromits are
around Bristol 1 July-8 September.
Information and maps online at
www.gromitunleashed.org.uk/
Paper copies are available at venues
including At-Bristol, M Shed,
Windmill Hill City Farm and Bristol
Tourist Information Centre.
Smaller gromits locally
Schools and local groups are hosting
smaller Gromits including those at
Hartcliffe Library, Dundry School and
the Zion Centre - see page 11.
All 80 large sculptures will be
auctioned in October to raise funds
for The Grand Appeal, Bristol
Children’s Hospital Charity.

Hartcliffe Farm has become a base
for City of Bristol College students
studying land-based and animal
care courses thanks to a partner-
ship between the two organisations.
Lorraine Horgan from Hartcliffe Farm
said: “City of Bristol College are now
a major partner for education work
with the Farm.”
Following the process from lambing
to going to market
Lorraine Horgan said: “They can walk
up the road from South Bristol Skills
Academy at Hengrove and the animals
are all here in their natural environment
and they can see the whole cycle – what
they eat, lambing, our cattle going to
market.”

Nigel Emery from Shortwood Road has an allotment at Hartcliffe Com-
munity Park Farm Allotments.
He said: “My kids and grandkids love it. It’s very tranquil here, got a good
community spirit, family orientated, we had a barbecue when the weather was
good, the kids don’t want to go home.
“We’re putting in raised beds for three disabled people & seven for the college.
We’ve got plans – the marshland will become a nature pond with pontoon fea-
turing magnifying glasses. We’ll also have a small park area, the more enjoyable
it is for the children the better it is for the parents.
“We’re inviting people who are interested in getting an allotment to get in touch.”
Allotments cost £50 per year for 15 x 50ft plot and £35 for 15 x 35 ft plot.
Access via Court Farm Road entrance. Tel: (0117) 978 2014

Range of qualifications available
The Level 2, 3 & 4 students use the
Farm from Monday to Wednesday
and work on various projects, includ-
ing rebuilding the paddocks.
The partnership hopes to offer an en-
riched learning experience to students
who are completing the land-based
qualifications, whilst improving links
within the community developing a
community project.
Students to assist with vet checks
Daniel Slade Curriculum Leader for
land-based industries at City of Bris-
tol College says: “The project is going
from strength to strength and is really
making a difference to the learning ex-
perience of the learners that access it.
Students can observe and assist with
basic veterinary checks under super-
vision of farm staff, such as checking
the sheep’s feet, or they can develop
enclosures for the homing of new ani-
mals. This can all be carried out whilst
working towards a qualification, as-
sisting the community and building
work experience.”

Year Six Fair Furlong Primary
School pupils created a colourful
mural to brighten a Withywood
pathway in July.
The work was possible thanks to
Wellbeing Funding from the Dundry
View Neighbourhood Partnership.
Improving lane for all
Residents said they wanted something
done to improve the pathway leading
from Vowell Close to Lynde Close.
Thanks to a joint effort between Fair
Furlong pupils and staff, artist Johnny
De Mearns and staff from Dundry View
NP and Safer Bristol this once unloved
pathway is now far more inviting.
‘Urban flower jungle’ scene
Kyle Beard, 11, has been going to Fair
Furlong since nursery and is looking
forward to using the sports facilities and
fast computers when he goes to
Merchants Academy in September.
It’s going to improve, more people are
going to want to come through. I hope
others will look after the wall.”
“Be the change you want to see”
Johnny de Mearns, the artist working on
the project with the pupils, said:
“I thought the mural was a great
opportunity for young people to learn
how their participatory creativity can have
such a positive and beautiful impact on
their local environment, I am really proud
of all they have learned and done in such
a short time.
“I hope people who see the mural enjoy
it and respect what they have done to
help be the change they want to see.”

CULTURE
Are your priorities for the area:
• Better parks and green
spaces?
• Young People’s services?
• Cleaner, smarter streets?
• Increased sense of safety?
• Improving how neighbours
get on together?
• Employment opportunities?
Come and tell us your priorities
at the Improving Dundry View
Priority Setting Event Saturday 7
September 9.45am-1.45pm
Headley Park Church, St Peters
Rise, Headley Park.
That’s where we’ll ask people what the
next set of improvements are that you
want the Neighbourhood Partnership
to work on over the next few years.
Parks Improvements
The Partnership has been working
through a list of Parks’ improvements
over the last couple of years.
For example, St Augustine’s Park is
getting a new playground now as a
result; the play pod in Withywood Park
was funded from the same ‘priorities’
list. Other new equipment is in the
pipeline for Willmott Park and Headley
Lane Park. We want to hear about new
priorities for parks from you.
Clean and Green money
Each ward in Dundry View has a small
fund to make improvements to smarten
up the streetscene. Come and tell us
where you think it should be spent.
Top ten issues for improvements
The police and council are working
closer together on the top ten issues
which local people want improved - it’s
called Neighbourhood Working.
We want you to pick your top ten
issues from our ‘long list’ to give them.
The morning will be a relaxed event with
tea and coffee, followed by a light lunch
to thank everyone attending.
We look forward to seeing you there.

In August the Steering Group is
meeting with the group interested
in developing an indoor Skate
Park at the pool site.
The Neighbourhood Partnership is
looking at two options for the future
of Bishopsworth Pool:
1. The indoor skate park and
2. The village hub idea.
‘Village hub’ idea
The Steering Group will then look to
develop the option around the ‘village
hub’ idea.
Then there will be a second round of
consultation with the wider
community to get a sense of which
option is wanted locally.
The Steering Group will then send a
final report to the Neighbourhood
Partnership in December 2013 for a
final discussion and decision about the
future of the site.

CULTURE
South Bristol Skills Academy has
been open for three years and this
is the first time I have eaten in their
restaurant.
By not going there sooner I think
I’ve been missing out!
The Academy Brasserie is staffed by
students in their first, second or third
year of study in Catering and Hospitality
and has a very relaxed but refined
atmosphere.
At lunchtime it was busy with tables of
end of term parties, staff from the
college and local regulars.
Food sourced from onsite garden
I was later told by Frederic Maindron
the restaurant manager that the
strawberries are just one item of
produce sourced from the horticulture
students’ vegetable garden on site.
It would be hard to get more locally
sourced ingredients than that!
I definitely would recommend a visit,
and if the dinner experience isn’t enough
of a treat the college also offer a spa
and dinner experience.

The varied menu, updated weekly by
the students, is a very reasonably priced
combination of two or three courses.
I chose the soup of the day to start,
which was vegetable. While waiting we
were offered homemade bread that is
made fresh daily by the students.
The soup was really tasty, as was my
main of cod nicoise salad.
The presentation of all the dishes,
including the Eton Mess pudding, was
very pretty and of a high standard.
The Academy Brasserie is open
Monday to Friday from 12pm to
1.30pm for lunch term-time only.
Lunch costs £4.50 for a main course,
£6.50 for two, £7.95 for three courses.

Children and young people in
Bristol will now have the chance to
improve their health, confidence
and self-esteem after the CSV Play
Rangers project received £250,000
boost from the Big Lottery Fund for
the next three years.
CSV Play Rangers has been delivering
outdoor play and learning across
Bristol for six years and the new funding
will allow them to continue the activity
sessions and improve access to
outdoor play in areas including
Hartcliffe and Withywood.
Four play sessions a week
The grant will fund four play sessions a
week, as well as bringing together local
children, young and adult volunteers to
form a project steering group.
Working outdoors in the community
Nicky Jones, CSV Play Manager in
Bristol said: “CSV is delighted to have
received this funding from the Big
Lottery to continue working outdoors
in the heart of the community with the
children that really need interesting and
challenging play opportunities.
“CSV Play Rangers will offer quality
activities and support to the children
and will engage the community to
ensure they are involved in the direction
of the project.”
Lucy de Groot, CSV Chief Executive,
said: “This vital grant from the Big
Lottery Fund will go a long way to help
young people be active in their
community, combat social exclusion
and tackle health problems.
“This provides opportunities for them
to experience new adventures that will
challenge them.”
CSV are working in partnership with
Learning Partnerships West, the Bristol
Youth Links provider of services for
children and young people to ensure
that play is provided across South
Bristol in as many green spaces as
possible.
CSV
CSV (Community Service Volunteers)
is a charitable organisation which
creates opportunities for people to take
an active part in the life of their
communities through volunteering,
learning and community action. Last
year 150,000 people gave their time
as volunteers through CSV.

Calling all Whitchurch Park
homeowners! Can you help? I am
a PhD student at the University of
the West of England in need of
homeowners in Whitchurch Park to
give me just two hours of their time.
You could make a huge difference to
my study.
Home energy efficiency savings
The study looks at motivations for home
energy efficiency improvements, from
low energy light bulbs and loft insulation
to low-energy house refurbishment.
Interested in talking to all
Whitchurch Park residents
But you don’t need to have installed a
mass of measures, in fact, even if you
haven’t installed energy efficiency
measures, I’d still like to hear from you.
The study relies on the kindness and
cooperation of homeowners in
volunteering their time to talk to me.
I need you to talk!

The June Neighbourhood
Forums welcomed many local
residents who came to raise
issues in their area.
First Bus sent representatives along
to two forums, Bishopsworth and
Whitchurch Park ho took questions
about the service.
Around 30 issues were raised at the
Bishopsworth forum including low
level drug issues and quad bikes.
Over 15 issues were raised at the
Hartcliffe Forum including riding
horses with no helmet and fires on
Dundry Slopes.
Ten issues were raised at the
Whitchurch Park Forum including
parking on Belland Drive and litter.
There will be feedback on progress
with issues raised at the September

Nine pupils from Bedminster Down
school who rescued a girl from a
swollen river and helped over a
hundred other young people to
cross safely received special
awards to mark their achievement
from Avon Fire & Rescue Service.
The awards were presented by Chief
Fire Officer, Kevin Pearson at St
Georges Hall as part of Bedminster
Down School’s awards ceremony.
The fifteen year olds from Bedminster
Down School were competing in the
Ten Tors Dartmoor Challenge in May.
On the first day of the trek, and having
made good time, the team led by Matt
Hunt decided to find a safer place to
cross a dangerously swollen river.
Spent three hours helping others
While waiting to cross waist-high water
a girl in the group in front lost her footing
and was carried off downstream.
Youngster Max Alford quickly used his
throw-line to pull the girl to safety.
She was picked up by the air
ambulance and later recovered.
The team then used their throw-line to
fashion a guide rope across the river
and helped more than 100 Ten Tors
challengers to safely cross the river.
The three and a half hours spent helping
others gave them little chance of
completing the route themselves.
Bravery & teamwork applauded
On hearing of their exploits the Ten Tors
Director took the unusual step of
awarding the students their medals even
though they did not finish.
“The director told us that the group’s
bravery, teamwork and concern for
others was exactly what the Ten Tors
was all about” said Steve Christie,
School Business Manager.
“We are very proud of the team and
it’s great they are receiving this extra
recognition from the Fire Service.”
