IntroductionThishandboookisforstudentswhohaveregisteredinSeptember2013fortheProfessionalCertificate/DiplomainUniversityTeachingandLearning.ItisalsoforthestudentswhoregisteredfortheolderGraduateCertificate/DiplomainUniversityTeachingandLearninginSeptember2011orearlier.Wehopeyoufindyourprogrammeveryrelevanttoyourteaching,intellectuallystimulatingandanenjoyablequalitylearningexperience.Wehopethattheopportunitiesprovidedtomeetandlearnwithcolleaguesacrosstheuniversitywillgiveyouarealsenseofcollegiality.

Whoistheprogrammefor?TheProfessionalCertificate(15ECTScredits)andProfessionalDiploma(30ECTScredits)inUniversityTeachingandLearningarein‐serviceprogrammesforthosewhoarecurrentlyteachinginhighereducation(i.eNQFlevel7orabove).Theyofferacademicsatdifferentstagesoftheircareersopportunitiestoreviewandimprovetheirteachingskillsandtheirunderstandingofapproachesandtheoriesineffectivehighereducation.Academicsatthestartoftheircareerwilldevelopskillstoworkeffectivelyintheclassroomandlearntodrawonpedagogicaltheoryandresearchininformingtheirteaching.Moreexperiencedacademicswillbeofferedopportunitiestorevitalisetheirteachingandtotryoutnewapproachestocurriculumdesignandassessment.

Theaimofthismoduleistoenablethoseinanacademicroletoreflect,reviewand

beyond.Participantswilldeconstructtheircurrentpractice,appraiseappropriate
methodologiesandexploretheoreticalconceptswithaviewtodevelopingfuture

whichelementsyourequire/wishtoconcentrateonfromthealternativemodules/
sectionsonoffer;AssessingandTeachingforLearning,theScholarshipofTeaching,
EvaluatingTeaching,SessionPlansandModulesetc.
Pleasenotethenegotiatedassignmentmustbeagreedandsignedoffbythemodule
coordinator.
Therearethreesectionstotheassessment:
1. Groupworkundertakeninsessionandonline–thataidsandfeedsinto

Therearetwopotentialwaysinwhichthefinalassignmentmaybeproduced:
1.Paper
Thecandidatemaycomposeapaperoressaystylepiecethatidentifiesa‘critical
incident’orpertinentfocusfromwithinone’spractice.
Thepieceisrequiredtomakeeitherexplicitorimplicitreferencetooneormoreof
thefiveelementsofdocumentaryevidencerequestedabove.Thismaybebywayof
example,explanationorincludedasaseriesofappendices.
Thesubmissionmustalsoincludetheindividual’steachingphilosophy(whichcites
relevanttexts).Thismaybedoneasaforewordtothepaper/essaythatimbuesthe
followingdiscussion,proposals,reviewetc.Oralternativelythephilosophymaybe
includedasanindependentpiecetothecorepaperi.e.asanappendix.
Relevantandappropriatereferencetoteachingandlearningtextsisessential
throughout.
2.Portfolio
Thecandiatemaycollatematerialsforafledglingportfolio.
Thiswillcompriseaninitialpositionpaperthatoutlinesone’spositionandpractice,
withinwhichistheindividual’steachingphilosophy(whichcitesrelevanttexts).
Theportfoliomaterialsarerequiredtomakeeitherexplicitorimplicitreferenceto
oneormoreofthefiveelementsofdocumentaryevidencerequestedabove.
Eachcollectionofrelevantexamplesistobeframedbyashortessay/commentary
thatreflectsone’scurrentpractice,understandingofsuch(e.g.disciplinary,
institutionalcontext,programmeormoduleevaluation,alignmentetc),analysisof
learner/teacherneeds,applicationofchangeandrationaleforsuch.
Relevantandappropriatereferencetoteachingandlearningtextsisessential
throughout.

Thismodulefocusesonthecentralroleofassessmentininfluencinghowstudents

Thismoduleexploresapproachestothedesignofengaging,creative,inclusive
modulesandprogrammes.Itintroduceslearnerstonewideas,recentresearchand
internationaltrendstoinforminnovativedesign.Itexploresdifferentstrategiesfor
thesequencingofteachingandlearningactivitiesandthedevelopmentof
programmecoherence.Itencourageslearnerstousedesignthinkingprocessesfor
programmedevelopment

AdmissionsEligibility
EntrytotheProfessionalCertificateandProfessionalDiplomainUniversityTeachingandLearningisopentoallacademicsinanactiveteachingrole.ProfessionalstaffwithasignificantteachingcommitmentmayalsoapplyandthefinaldecisiononeligibilityofallcandidateswillbemadebytheBoardofStudies.Thedefinitionof“significantteachingcommitment”willvarywithcontext;but,asageneralrule,aminimumof2hoursteachingperweekor50hoursoverthecourseoftheacademicyearwouldbeexpected.TheteachingroleneedstobeonprogrammeswithinauniversityoratNFQlevel7orabove.Normallyapplicantstotheseprogrammeswillholdanhonoursdegreeorequivalentinanydiscipline.
