January 2020
This is a time of the year I truly enjoy. Advent has opened our hearts
and lives to be filled again with the loving light of God’s love. Christ-
mas brings us twelve days of festive celebrations with community
connections.
Epiphany elevates the gifts of all people who come to honor Jesus
from all walks of life and experience. Jesus’ baptism with the blessing
of the Holy Spirit enters our cold winter days. Then a liturgical pause
during winter as we travel together, pilgrims with the Wiseman, refu-
gees with the Holy Family; through the Season of Epiphany which
varies greatly in length from year to year.
An aspect of the unexpected built right into our life together. In 2020
we get seven weeks before leaning into Lent. (Ash Wednesday wor-
ship is February 26th.) Time to explore the unexpected. Season of
Holy Spirit Wonder. Nearly two months of epiphany inspiration to
motivate and empower our intentions toward growing in grace. For
disciples, this is a growing season; letting all that hope, wonder, joy,
peace, and love from Christmas to develop and blossom into actions.
Holiness of heart shining forth in holiness of life. Together we experi-
ence the Holy Spirit resting on us, remembering that in our baptism
we are claimed and called blessed to be a blessing for the world;
Christ’s light brightly gleaming.
As decorations are put away, wrappings are cleaned up, gifts find their
new homes, and everyone returns home and routine; let the season of
Epiphany light glow with radiant beams of God’s holy light. Happy
New Year. May we all give thanks for today and have bright hope for
tomorrow ~Pastor Gretchen

Note from Our Music Ministries Director:
Words fail me trying to thank our musician/sanctuary choir for all the work
they put into the Christmas music offering for this year. The Sanctuary Choir
is a dedicated bunch of wonderful singers/musicians who give their time and
talents to pull together the anthems each week and to present a programs as
they did for December 22 (for two services) their efforts were extraordinary.
Thank you for serving God and Wesley in this way.
Another word of thanks from me to each of you who were kind enough to give me a Christmas
card this year. They are always nice and your comments are so gracious. It is my pleasure to serve
as your Minister of Music and I am grateful for the opportunity. ~Jerry

January 2020: THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS BEGINS
Being a steward is a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude to God for life, for family, for our Chris-
tian faith. We “steward” creation, wealth and possessions. We are stewards of our bodies created by God to be
used for his glory. We even steward relationships, in the sense that they are gifts to be carefully maintained
and nurtured. We do this because we are created by God.
But here may be a new one. The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 “Think of us in this way, as serv-
ants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. Moreover, it is required of servants that they be found trust-
worthy.” When I think of “God’s mysteries” my mind goes to the love and grace of God which is available for
all and the calling of God which is upon us all. Why God loves us is a mystery when humankind has been so
arrogant toward God. Might it be that this gift of love and grace is itself the mystery to be handled as stew-
ards? Not carelessly. Not frivolously. And yet generously with a hurting world.
We have been handed a unique task that of sharing the message of the love of Jesus with others.
Let me try to say it with a marvelous poem from Howard Thurman, a poem I like to bring out after Christmas.
THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS BEGINS
When the song of the angels of silent
When the star in the sky is gone
When the kings and princes are home
When the shepherds are again tending their sheep
When the manger is darkened and still
The work of Christmas begins...........
To find the lost
To heal the broken
To feed the hungry
To bring peace among people
To befriend the lonely
To release the prisoner
To make music in the heart.
~ Howard Thurman ~
Maybe the surprising work of stewardship this year will be exactly what he urges, to do this vital work of the
Kingdom of God, which we may not think of as stewardship, but it is the stewardship of the gospel.
And practice generosity! Always practice generosity!

Each week in worship you lift up people and situations in prayer. These are
prayed over by the Pastor, the Monday Crew, and the Tuesday Prayer
Group. Many other individuals also continually pray for these and other sit-
uations daily. When you complete a prayer card or send an email to the
church office, it is a great help for this ministry of care. Being a Prayer Cov-
enant Community is an incredible gift of grace for Wesley. Thank you for
your continued prayers in support of the ministries we share. All are wel-
come to share in this practiced faith experience on any Tuesday morning.

There are 18 plans to cover this year. Each is 21 days long. Start at the beginning and work through the year
(and a few days into January 2021)!
Read the Bible Together!
For the past three years Bishop Lewis has been encouraging all of us in the Virgin-
ia Conference to read the Bible together, all the way through in a year. This year's schedule is a
thematic reading of all 66 books through eighteen 21 day plans. Consider starting a new prac-
tice on January 1st or enhancing how you already engage scripture. Add a journal to your prac-
tice. Make plans to meet up with others once a week and talk about the readings. Choose a way
that fits your daily schedule.
If you need a Bible, want to explore a new study Bible option, or your current Bible needs some TLC let me
know. To be included in a daily text or email reminder, contact Pastor Gretchen and you will be added to the
daily reading list.
Let's covenant to read God's holy texts together to grow in faith and love. Peace, Pastor Gretchen
In this new year, challenge yourself to study the Bible and strengthen your faith in the process.
Tips on reading the Bible daily:
• Start reading the Bible today.
• Set aside a specific time and place each day. Set your schedule and then stick to it. Mornings are great; but
feel free to use any time that works consistently with your schedule.
• Get a good study Bible to help to illuminate the meaning of the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek text.
• Choose a translation to use during your reading.
• Say a short prayer to God before you begin, asking the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding.
• Dive in and enjoy the richness of God’s Word! Apply God’s Word to your life. Bible study should be prac-
tical and applicable. These seven steps will help you begin a journey in becoming a “lifelong learner” of
God’s Word.

Human Relations Sunday - January 19 United Methodist Special Ministry offering day
We have been asked to love one another like members of our family. Knowing
how hard this request would be, God sent Jesus to show us how. Jesus walked
with those in the margins during his life and shared the message that everyone is
valuable and loved. This is the message we celebrate on Human Relations Day.
On Jan. 19, across the United Methodist connection, we come together to help bridge the gap between church
and community. We do this by participating in an offering set aside for Human Relations Day. For more than
half a century, United Methodists have observed this church wide special Sunday in recognition of the mes-
sage Jesus demonstrated during his life: every one of God’s children is important.
The Human Relations Day offering supports neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, com-
munity advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services and works with at-risk youth through the
Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. Such ministries give us the opportunity to walk in the margins and
continue the work of Jesus. http://www.umcgiving.org/ministry-articles/human-relations-day
