Presidents ReportHello Members
I was asked recently what to look for when buying a new laptop andI found this difficult to answer. It’s a bit like buying a car – there are manymakes and models and we all use them for different purposes so there isno one size fits all.
Windows laptops now come in a wide range of specifications withprices ranging from under $300 to well over $3000. While they all use thesame operating system (Windows 10) their capabilities vary greatly withthe lower priced ones suitable for simple tasks such as web browsing andemailing. Usually they have smaller screens, limited storage capacity andlower powered (therefore slower) processers. As the tasks become moredemanding such as photo editing, word processing or buildingspreadsheets you will need the faster processing power, more storageand a bigger screen that’s found on the more expensive range ofmachines. The top end computers have the fastest processers, massesof storage and high quality video cards and are suitable for everythingincluding gaming, video editing and multi-tasking.
Weight, physical size and how long it will run between batterycharges are also important if you need it to be truly portable but not soimportant if you just want to store it out of sight when not in use.
My suggestion would be to go for a good sized screen, about500GB of storage, at least 2 usb ports, a CD/DVD drive and the fastestprocesser and RAM you can afford. You may not think you will need afast machine now but, believe me; you will be disappointed when youcompare yours with someone else’s a few months after buying it!
Regards, John.
