ICT / Software Sector
Automotive Sensors • AutoSense - Advanced sensors and algorithms for autonomous driving
• Streaming sensor data from vehicle and fixed nodes to cloud
• Extending local vehicle map using cloud sensor data
• Advanced sensor technologies & sensor mix
• Difficult environment sensing (adverse conditions)
• RAVSLAM - Robust Autonomy through Visual SLAM
• Building and maintaining a map from multiple traversals of an environment
• Use of deep learning to “fill-in” for partial sensory information
High Definition Maps
• Integration of multimodal terrestrial and airborne sensor data (Optical &
LiDAR) to rapidly map and monitor road corridors and generate a
semantically rich 3D route-network database
• Develop highly-automated, computational workflows based on Machine
Learning and cloud technologies
• Meet the needs of stakeholders such as transportation developers, local
authorities (planning), safety engineers & vehicle navigation service
companies
Driver Assessment using Telematics
• Industry Partner (re)insures over 3 million vehicles in 50 countries
• Most of these vehicles are tracked using onboard telematics devices
• Analyzing the data will reduce fraud, increase vehicle safety and longevity and reduce emissions
• AI techniques will also provide drivers with bespoke safety information
• Particular attention paid to the risk of EVs and bespoke risk reduction for those vehicles
Neuroergonomics for Remote Operator Monitoring in BAV
• Study remote driver attention and engagement to ensure driver remains “in the loop”
• Develop novel HCI technology for monitoring cognitive engagement during remote supervision of BAV (eye gaze, EEG)
• Test Platform (mobile robot): includes cameras, radar, ultrasonic, perception, mapping and localization, navigation
• Industry partner gains head start in future markets and necessary HCI (neuroergonomics)
Autonomous Payload Perception Systems
• Dynamic load perception, vehicle control with odd-form loads in narrow aisle high stack ware-houses. Emphasis on safety critical auto operation
• Vision/lidar/radar imaging for navigation in multi vehicle and shared human environment
Baledrive Plus
• Quantify operator behaviour to improve performance/lower operating costs
• Predicting time remaining in-field• Field boundary estimation
• Time/crop remaining prediction
•Machine and crop performance• Crop weight estimation
• Machine performance
• Telematics
CAV Infrastructure Development
• NUI Galway Test Vehicle and On-Campus Testbed
• SFI Infrastructure Award (NATDaP)
• Collaboration between Lero and CONNECT researchers
• MU – Lead
• NUI Galway
• CONNECT@UCC
• MTU
• Lero and CONNECT researchers also contributed to successful Future Mobility Campus Ireland proposal
• Lero/UL/ITS submission CAV Ireland Cluster Manager (based in UL)
Policy Development
• Lero researchers active in all WGs in Horizon Europe CCAM Partnership
• Contribution to Government guidelines for testing CAV on public roads in Ireland
• Prof Dan Toal elected as Scientific Council Member for French Oceanographic Fleet (Operated by Ifremer), Jan 2021 – Dec 2026. Advising on Connected Vehicles in the Ocean
Value Proposition - Lero
