Headquarters

Royal Dutch Shell

world’s largest energy company

is

second largest company in the world measured by revenues

one of the six oil and gas "super majors"

has operations in over 90 countries, produces around 3.1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has

44,000 service stations worldwide.

What’s more?

“Global Best Practices 2010- Manage integrity risk”-

Shell and Society

Brent Spar

Location : North Sea

Brent Spar - obsolete and awaiting decommissioning.

Greenpeace UK reacted quickly and successfully to the situation and Shell backed down.

Shell and Greenpeace granted permission by the British government to dump Brent Spar in a deep water trench in

the North Sea.

Hundreds of similar oil installations exist, over 50 of which are due for decommissioning in the next

10 years!

Niger Delta

Location : North Sea

The Niger Delta produces 80% of the oil that comes from Nigeria. It is also the home to many

small minority ethnic groups, dependent on fishing and farming, who suffer the irreparable

damages of oil drilling on their lands

this environmental assault has smothered land with oil, killed masses of fish and other aquatic life, and introduced devastating acid rain to the

land of the Ogoni

For the Ogoni, a people dependent upon farming and fishing, the poisoning of the land and water

has had devastating economic and health consequences

Shell Blames Communities for 98 Percent Oil Spill!

Although Shell drills oil in 28 countries, 40% of its oil spills worldwide have occurred in the Niger Delta. In the Niger Delta, there were 2,976 oil

spills between 1976 and 199

Ken Saro Wiwa

protest by the Ogoni nation in Nigeria against Shell's operations

This resulted in Nigeria's suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations for over 3 years

Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 others were tried and executed

Shell continues to operate in Nigeria!

South Africa

Apartheid

In violation of the United Nations sponsored international oil embargo against South Africa,

Shell has shipped large quantities of crude oil to South Africa.

Shell has pumped huge amounts of its capital into the petroleum refining and chemical industries in

South Africa.

Shell has supplied oil products to the South African military and police, well-known for their

brutality.

Shell South Africa pays its white employees while they serve in the South African military--The South

African government pays draftees a token wage which Shell supplements.

Shell exploits its black workforce in South Africa!

Forced Labor/ Human Trafficking

Brazil

Shell announced that it was putting $12 billion into a venture with Cosan, the leading company

in Brazil’s sugar cane ethanol industry

Cosan was blacklisted by the Labor Ministry in Brazil after severe labor rights abuses were

identified at one of the company’s suppliers.

Sugarcane from Brazil is often produced by forced labor.

Agro fuels have been criticized for many reasons –- negative environmental impacts, contributing

to hunger, grabbing land from communities!

The general conditions for workers in this sector often include low pay, long hours, minimal or no

attention to health and safety standards, exposure to toxic chemicals, and miserable living

conditions

Over the years, many workers in Brazil’s sugar industry have been removed from forced labor

conditions as well as situations of debt bondage.
