BASIC INFORMATION

• 570 students• Less than average in

our district (680)• Grades K-5• Average class sizes:

23, 20, 16, 19, 20, 23 (K-5 respectively)• Address: 5307 Six

Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609

DEMOGRAPHICS

• 70% of students receive free and reduced lunch

• Majority of students are African-American and Hispanic

MAGNET SCHOOL

• World Languages Magnet School• Leadership Magnet

School

• Public school• Small % of

students apply to get in, the rest are neighborhood kids

• The longer Green has their magnet affiliation, the more application students they will take

TRANSITIONING FACULTY

• Over half of the staff is new this year• There are 7 BT’s,

which are teachers that are in either their first, second, or third year of teaching

LEADER-IN-ME GRANT

“To Develop Leaders, One Child at a Time”• Green was just awarded the Leader-in-me

Grant • A whole school transformation model• Based on The 7 Habits of

Highly Effective People• Mission: schools should not

merely be focused on improving test scores, but should provide opportunities for students to develop their full potential

CURRENT LIBRARY

• The current librarian is new; This is her first year as a full time employee

• Fixed scheduling: classes go to the library once a week during specials

• Students can also go into the library in the mornings before class

LIBRARY WEBSITE

• The current library website is simply the catalog• No other information, pictures, announcements,

or anything else

TRANSITIONING SCHEDULE

• Until this school year, Green was a year round school but has now changed to a traditional schedule for the 2013-2014 school year

GOING, GOING, GONE GREEN

• The school is named “Green” because they have a focus on the environment and recycling• On the homepage of

their website the biggest announcement is about voting for the school as green at target.com

“MAGNET THEME ESSENTIALS”• Emphasis on 21st century leadership

development and character development based on principles of Dr. Stephen Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

• Student led projects developing communication and presentation skills

• Daily Spanish or Mandarin Chinese language instruction for all K-5 students

• Technology used to facilitate learning about the world and to communicate across cultures

LOCATION

• Surrounding public institutions: 2 country clubs and North Hills shopping center• Closest public

library is inCameronVillage

• The school is on a very busy street and some students get bused in from different neighborhoods• School building is

very old and may possibly be torn down soon

WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

Diversity Controversy• In 2010, the board

voted to switch from a socioeconomic diversification policy it had followed for a decade to a system that focused on neighborhood schools

• This changed the percentage of students that could have free or reduced lunch• Thus it drew

criticism form those claiming it would “resegregate” schools
