GREAT ARTISTS,PAST AND PRESENTInterpreting the Arts: A Digital Library of Artists of African Descent

for Humanities Teaching in the Performing and Visual ArtsLenora Helm Hammonds, Assistant Professor, Department of Music

Vision■ This proposal request was to fund the creation of a digital library for teaching artists, for use in the new set of courses to be included

in the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Teaching Artist Certificate program. Our vision is that the teaching artist digital library,

Interpreting the Arts: A Digital Library for Humanities Teaching in the Performing and Visual Arts, will aide the student, equip the

instructor and provide a substantial collection of resources to the teaching artist field at large. The first of its kind at an HBCU and

only the second university in the U.S. to host such a course, the NCCU Teaching Artist Certificate program--an online instructional

program—launched its first students, Fall 2017. The first courses included pre-requisite material, but subsequent courses in future

semesters will incorporate the contents of the proposed digital library: The course, Arts Integration and Collaboration and the

Capstone Residency for Teaching Artists. The digital library will comprise a diverse array of American artists, including a segment of

African-American native North Carolinians. These artists chronicled are from all genres in the arts, and all arts disciplines. The

resulting collection will fill a void in humanities materials featuring an underrepresented and diverse cultural swath of regional and

national internationally renowned performing and visual artists.

Why this project?

Why this project?

Why this project?Traveling far and it’s lonely, keeping the dreams that you’ve sown. See the truth as it is, or that life that you live may not be your own.”
