The content of the original Policies and Procedures document was developed from the Coordinating Committee on Graduate Affairs (CCGA) Sociology proposal voted on and approved unanimously by the Sociology Graduate Group on 10/31/2013 (Faculty Members Van Dyke, Almeida, Golash-Boza, Valdez, Hamilton, Beattie, Dodson). Modifications to the original Policies and Procedures were made by the Sociology Graduate Group and approved by a majority vote of all faculty members of the Sociology Graduate Group on Friday, February 10, 2017 (Faculty Members Van Dyke, Almeida, Golash-Boza, Valdez, Hamilton, Beattie, Dodson, Flores, Pirtle, Alegria), which were approved by Graduate Council on May 2, 2017. Modifications that are reflected in this current version of the Policies and Procedures for the Sociology Graduate Group were approved by majority vote of all faculty members of the Sociology Graduate Group during the monthly faculty meeting held August 28, 2017. 1) PELP,InAbsentiaandFilingFeeStatus

A. Introduction

1) Aimsand Scope: Sociologyisthescientificstudyofsociety,socialinstitutions,socialrelationships,andhumanorganization.TheSociologyfacultyatUCMercedmakeupavibrantandcollegialintellectualcommunity,markedbyoutstandingscholarshipandparticipationininterdisciplinarycommunitiesofinquiry.Ourprogramfostersscholarly excellenceinSociology,withaspecificfocusonsocialinequality,organizationsandinstitutions, andpolitics.Ourprogramisnationallyandinternationallyrecognizedforits highqualityscholarship,graduatetraining,andcontributionstotheuniversityandcommunity. Studentsaretaughtstate‐of‐the‐artresearchdesignmethodsandconceptualmodelsfor carryingoutindependentresearch.Thefull‐timeprogramleadstothedegreeofDoctorof PhilosophyinSociology.Ph.D.studentshavetheoptiontoobtainaMasterofArtsin Sociologydegree,eitherenroutetoaPh.D.degree(non‐terminal),orinlieuofaPh.D.degree (terminal)ifastudentexitsthegraduateprogrampriortofulfillingthePh.D.requirements.Theprogram'soverarchinggoalistoconvertstudentsfromconsumersofsociologicalknowledgetoindependent,expertproducersofsocialresearch.TheUCMercedgraduateprograminSociologyisdistinctiveinseveralways.First,itprovidesintensivementoringtograduatestudents,withpersonalizedattentiongiventosmallcohortsofacceptedstudents.Studentsarematchedwithafacultymentorimmediatelyuponentranceintotheprogram,andtheprogramcurriculumincludessmallseminarsaswellasanintensivewritingcoursetofacilitateindependentresearchandthepreparationofjournalarticles.Second,ourprogramoffersauniquesetofsubstantivefociwithinaninterdisciplinaryenvironment.Sociologyfacultystudyacombinationoftopics,suchasrace,healthcareandeducationthatareespeciallyrelevanttoCalifornia'sCentralValley,thestateandthenation.Ourprogramincludesopportunitiestoparticipateininterdisciplinaryresearchprojects,aswellasinformalandformalseminarsfromacrosstheuniversity.Finally,theprogramisdesignedtotrainstudentsinresearchcareersinbothhighereducationandpublicandprivateagenciesoutsideofacademia.TheAmericanSociologicalAssociation(ASA)faultsgraduateprogramsinsociologyforfailingtopreparestudentsforcareersoutsideofacademia.Ourprogramprovidestrainingonarangeofsubstantivetopicsandresearchmethodologiesthatwillprovideanexcellentfoundationforcareersinacademiaandasresearchers.

2) AdmissionsRequirements:

Consideration for graduate group admission requires a bachelor’s degree, three lettersofrecommendation,officialtranscripts,GREscores,TOEFLorIELTSscore(ifapplicable)andsubmissionofthegraduateonlineapplicationwithfeebythestatedadmissiondeadline. A minimumGPAof3.0isrequired. Admissiondecisionsaremadeonacase‐bycasebasis. Meeting someorallofthesecriteriadoesnotguaranteeadmission,butmerelyeligibility.Thedecisionto recommendadmissiontotheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducationwillbemadebythe GraduateGroupAdmissionsCommitteeonthebasisofavailablespaceandthecompetitivenessof applicantscomparedtotheeligiblepool.

b) Deficiencies:Courseworkdeficienciesshouldbemadeupbytheendofthefirstacademicyearfollowinginitialenrollmentbyearningalettergradeof“B”orbetter.

3) GeneralCommittees:

a) ExecutiveCommittee:

TheExecutiveCommitteeshall,inconsultationwiththefaculty,determineandimplementpolicyfortheGroup.TheExecutiveCommitteeshallconsistofthree members(theGraduateGroupChairplustwomembers,appointedbytheGradGroupChairinconsultationwiththefaculty).TheExecutiveCommitteemakesappointmentstotheAdmissionsCommitteeandEducationPolicyCommitteefortheGradGroup.

b) AdmissionCommittee:TheAdmissionsCommitteeismadeupofthreefacultymembers,atleastoneofwhomisamemberoftheExecutiveCommittee(Chair),andwhoappointstwoadditionalmembers,inconsultationwiththeExecutiveCommittee.TheAdmissionsCommitteedeterminescriteriaforassessingstudentapplicants,includingdevelopingarubricforscoring(excellent,verygood,good,fair,poor,basedoninformationprovidedtousontheonlineadmissionstool,whichincludesbutisnotlimitedtoundergradcollegeandgpa,gradcollege(MA)andgpa,interests,fit,andfacultymentioned).TheAdmissionsCommitteemeetsatleastoncetorankstudentsandmakesrecommendationstofaculty;finalselectionismadebyAdmissionsCommitteeinconsultationwithfaculty.TheAdmissionsCommitteeisresponsibleforsendingthefinallistofrecommendedadmitstotheDeanofGraduateStudiesandisalsochargedwiththerecommendations/allocationofintramuralfinancialassistance,fellowships,andawardsfor newandcontinuingstudents.

c) EducationPolicyCommittee: TheEducationPolicyCommitteeconsistsofseveralad‐hoccommitteememberschargedwithestablishingandmaintainingdocumentationontheSociologyGraduateGroupcurriculum.ThecommitteepreparesandexecutesallreviewsoftheSociologyGraduateGroupprogram,includingthe seven‐yearreview,WASCsubstantivechanges,andotherevaluationsspecifiedinthis proposal.Inconsultationwiththeprogramfaculty,theEducationPolicyCommitteecoordinatesanddocumentsproposedchangesinprogrammaticrequirementsoftheSociologyGraduateGroupprogram,andpresentingproposedchangestothevotingbody,GraduateandCouncilandWASCasneeded.AllchangestotheprogrammaticrequirementsoftheSociologyGraduateGroupcurriculumandassociatedrequirementsmustbeapprovedbyvoteoftheeligibleGraduateGroupFaculty.

e) ThesisRequirements: Thesiscommitteemeetings:Thecandidateandadvisorshouldmeetatleastoncea yearwiththeothermembersof thethesiscommitteetodiscussprogressandanychanges inresearchobjectives.Thesis:ResearchfortheMaster'sthesisistobecarriedoutunderthesupervisionofafaculty memberoftheprogramandmustrepresentanoriginalcontributiontoknowledgeinthefield. Thethesisresearchmustbeconductedwhilethestudentisenrolledintheprogram.Thethesisis submittedtothethesiscommitteeatleastonemonthbeforethescheduleddefense.Allcommittee membersmust approve the thesis in its entirety andsign the title page before the thesis is submitted electronically to the Graduate Divisionfor final approval. Should the committee determine that the thesis is unacceptable,evenwith substantial revisions; the programmay recommendthestudentfordisqualificationfromtheprogramtotheViceProvostandDeanof GraduateEducation,inkeepingwiththeUCMercedGraduatePoliciesandProceduresHandbook.The thesis must be submitted by the deadline in the semester in which the degree isto be conferred.Those studentswho complete requirements and submit thesis after theend of the semesterandpriortothestartofthesubsequentsemesterwillearnadegreeforthefollowing semester,butwillnotberequiredtopayfeesforthatsemester.Instructionsonpreparationof thethesisareavailableintheUCMThesisandDissertationalManualandascheduleofdates forfilingthethesisinfinalformarepublishedontheGraduateDivisionwebsiteinthecalendar anddeadlinessection.

3) Advising Structure andMentoring:

Thegraduateadvisoristhefacultymemberwhosupervisesthestudent’sresearch andthesis.TheGraduateAdvisor,whoisappointedbyGraduateGroupChair,isaresourcefor informationonacademicrequirements,policiesandprocedures,andregistrationinformationuntil the Thesis Committee is formed. The Graduate Group Staff assistsstudents with identifying appointmentsandgeneraluniversitypolicies.TheMentoringGuidelinescanbefoundatthefollowinglinkUCMMentoringGuidelines.

4) Master’sDegreeCommittees:

a. Thesis Committee: TheThesisCommitteeiscomprisedofthreefacultymembers.Thestudent,inconsultationwithhis/hergraduateadvisor andgraduategroupchair,nominatetwoadditionalfaculty(inadditiontotheadvisorwhoservesasChair)toserveontheThesisCommittee.

These nominationsaresubmittedtotheGraduateDivisionforformalappointmentinaccordancewith GraduateCouncilpolicy.Acommitteeofthreefacultymembersshallapprovethesubjectandpassonthecontentofthesis.

4) DissertationPlan:InaccordancewithUniversityofCaliforniapolicy,aminimumoffour

TheGraduateAdvisoristhefacultymemberwhosupervisesthestudent’sresearchanddissertation.TheGraduateChair,whoisappointedbytheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducation,isaresourceforinformationonacademicrequirements,policiesandprocedures,andregistrationinformationuntiltheDoctoralCommitteeisformed.TheGraduateGroupCoordinatorassistsstudentswithidentifyingappointmentsandgeneraluniversitypolicies.TheMentoringGuidelinescanbefoundatthefollowinglink,UCMMentoringGuidelines.

6) DoctoralDegreeCommittees:

a. Qualifying Examination Committee: TheQualifyingExamCommitteeiscomprisedoftwofacultymembers.ThegraduategroupchairinconsultationwithfacultynominatefacultytoserveontheQualifyingExamination Committeebasedonareaexpertise. These nominations are submitted tothe Graduate DivisionforformalappointmentinaccordancewithGraduateCouncilpolicy.TheCommittee shall approve the subjectand pass on the content ofexamination.Usuallyoneofthecommitteemembersdirectstheexamination.b) CandidacyCommittee:TheCandidacyCommitteeiscomprisedofthreefacultymembers.Thestudent,inconsultationwithhis/hergraduateadvisor,nominatestwofacultytoserveontheCandidacyCommittee(inadditiontotheadvisorwhoservesasChair).ThesenominationsaresubmittedtotheGraduateGroupChairforformalappointmentinaccordancewithGraduateCouncilpolicy.TheCandidacyCommittee,inconsultationwiththegraduatestudentandthefacultyadvisor,selectsfacultytoserveonthethree‐memberDoctoralCommittee.TheCommitteeordinarilywillreviewanoutlineoftheproposeddissertationproject,andwilldeterminebyoralexamination(theDissertationProposalDefense)thestudent'scompetenceinthatarea.When,byunanimousvote,theCommitteedecidesthestudentisqualifiedforthedissertationphase,itshallrecommendadvancementtocandidacytotheGraduateCouncilviatheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducation.

7) AdvancementtoCandidacy:

Beforeadvancingtocandidacyforadoctoraldegree,astudentmusthavesatisfiedallrequirementssetbythegraduateprogram,musthavemaintainedaminimumGPAof3.2inallcourseworkundertaken,andmusthavepassedunanimouslytheQualifyingExaminationbeforetheQualifyingExamCommitteeappointedtoadministerthatexamination.TheApplicationforQualifyingExaminationavailableontheGraduateDivisionwebsitemustbesubmittedonemonthpriortotheproposedexaminationdate.Studentsmustbeingoodacademicstandingandregisteredforthesemesterinwhichtheexaminationisheld.TheQualifyingExaminationCommitteeconductstheexamandsubmitsresultstotheGraduateDivisionusingtheQualifyingExaminationReportForm.Normally,studentsadvancebytheendoftheseventhsemester.Thestudentmustfiletheappropriatepaperwork(AdvancetoCandidacyfortheDegreeofDoctorPhilosophyFormandConflictofInterestForm)withtheGraduateDivisionandpaythecandidacyfeeinordertobeofficiallypromotedtoPh.D.Candidacy.

8) QualifyingExaminationRequirements:

a) QualifyingExaminationi. GeneralInformation

AllstudentswillcompleteallcourserequirementsbeforetakingtheirQualifyingExamination.Passingthisexam,inadditiontopassingtheDissertationProposalDefense,makesthestudenteligibleforadvancementtocandidacy.Thequalifyingexamshouldbetakenbythe6thsemesterandnolaterthanthebeginningofthe7thsemesterafteradmissiontothePh.D.program.

TheQualifyingExaminationshouldevaluatebothgeneralpreparednessinthediscipline,andspecificcompetencetopursuetheproposeddissertationtopic.Initsdeliberation,theCommitteeordinarilywillreviewthestudent'sacademicrecord,preliminaryexaminationsandevaluationsbyotherfaculty.TheCommitteemayconductanyotherexaminationitdeemsappropriate.Followingitsformalappointment,theCommitteeisfreetoadoptwhateverproceduresitdeemsappropriatetoconducttheQualifyingExaminationforcandidacy,subjecttotherulesoftheprogramandthosespecifiedbelow:— AdministrationoftheCandidacyExaminationmustconformtothepoliciesestablishedbytheGraduateCouncil.

— Thestudentmustbegivenadequatenoticeofthecontent,formandtimeoftheexamination.

— TheCommitteemustmeettodecideupontheprocedurestobefollowed,andthestudentgivenanopportunitytocommentupontheselectedprocedures.

ii. ConductoftheExam

AlthoughtheformalQualifyingExaminationforcandidacyordinarilyisconductedover72hours,theCommitteemaymeetintermittentlyoveralongerperiod,andmaydecidetoreexaminethestudentononeormoretopicsafteraspecifiedinterval.TheCommitteemustreporttotheGraduateCouncilviatheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducationwithin45days.UponcompletionofthequalifyingexaminationandallotherGraduateGrouprequirementsforAdvancementtoCandidacy,theresultsshouldbesubmittedtotheGraduateDivisionontheQualifyingExaminationReportForm.TheQualifyingExaminationReportForm

mustbesignedbyallcommitteemembersatthetimethecandidacyexaminationisconcludedandsubmittedevenifthestudentfailedtheexamination.Priortoconveningastudentcommitteeforadvancementtocandidacyexam,theFacultyAdvisor,theGraduateGroupChair,andthegraduatestudentmustsigntheStatementonConflictofInterestformthatisincludedintheAdvancementtoCandidacyfortheDegreeofDoctorofPhilosophyform.IftheunanimousrecommendationoftheCommitteeisfavorable,andthestudentpassestheDissertationProposalDefense,thestudentmustpaythecurrentadvancementtocandidacyfeetothecampusCashier'sOfficethatwillvalidatetheadvancementtocandidacyform.ThestudentmustthensubmittheadvancementtocandidacyformtotheGraduateDivision.ThecandidateandgraduateprogramwillbenotifiedofformaladvancementandtheappointmentofaDoctoralCommittee.AdvancementtoCandidacybeginswiththefirstacademictermfollowingcompletionofallrequirements(includingsubmissionofallforms).

iii. OutcomeoftheExamBeforevotinguponitsrecommendationfororagainstpassingtheQualifyingExam,theCommittee,asawhole,mayelecttomeetwiththestudent,andanymemberoftheCommitteewillhavetherighttoposeappropriatequestionstothestudent.Thecommittee,havingreachedaunanimousdecision,shallinformthestudentofitsdecisionto:

Pass‐AstudenthaspassedwhentheQualifyingExaminationCommitteeunanimouslyvotesthatthestudentpassedtheentireexaminationwithscholarshipthatisatleastacceptable.ThecommitteemustreporttotheGraduateCouncilviatheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducationwithin45days.Ifagreedunanimouslybythecommitteethestudentmaybeallowedtomakeminormodificationspriortosubmittingtheresultsoftheexamination.

Fail‐AstudenthasfailedwhentheQualifyingExaminationCommitteevotesunanimouslythatthestudentfailedtheentireexamination.Thesecondexaminationmayhaveaformatdifferentfromthefirst,butthesubstanceshouldremainthesameundermostcircumstances.Astudentwhoseperformanceonthesecondattemptisalsounsatisfactory,orwhodoesnotundertakeasecondexaminationwithinareasonableperiodoftime,issubjecttoacademicdisqualification,inkeepingwithUCMercedGraduatePoliciesandProceduresHandbook.

AthirdexaminationmaybegivenonlywiththeapprovaloftheGraduateGroupcommitteeandtheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducation.Astudentwhoseperformanceonthethirdattemptisalsounsatisfactory,orwhodoesnotundertakeathirdexaminationwithinareasonableperiodoftime,issubjecttoacademicdisqualification.

PartialPass‐AstudenthaspartiallypassedwhentheQualifyingExaminationCommitteevotesunanimouslythatthestudentpassedsomecomponentsbutfailedothers.Inthisinstance,thefollowingapply:

o Thestudenthastheoptionoftakingasecondexaminationasdetailedinaboveonthecomponentsfailed;and

o Thechairofthecommitteemustwritealettertothestudent,withacopytotheGraduateDivision,conveying

8) Dissertation Requirements:

a. FinalExaminationAfinalexamination,ororaldefense,isrequiredbythegraduateprogram,theDoctoralCommitteesupervisesthatexamination,thefocusofwhichisthecontentofthedoctoraldissertation.Ordinarily,thefinalexaminationwillbegivenjustpriortothecompletionofthedissertationandwhilethestudentisinresidenceduringaregularacademicsession.AdministrationofthefinalexaminationissubjecttothepoliciesoftheGraduateCouncilgoverningcriticalexaminations.Uponcompletionofthefinalexaminationandapprovalofthedissertation,theDoctoralCommitteerecommends,bysubmissionoftheReportonFinalExaminationofthePh.D.DegreeForm,theconferralofthePh.D.subjecttofinalsubmissionoftheapproveddissertationfordepositintheUniversityArchives.TheCommitteerecommendationmustbeunanimous.

b. GeneralRequirements

Thesubmissionofthedissertationisthelaststepintheprogramleadingtotheawardofanadvanceddegree.AlldissertationssubmittedinfulfillmentofrequirementsforadvanceddegreesatUCMmustconformtocertainUniversityregulationsandspecificationswithregardtoformatandmethodofpreparation.TheUCMThesisandDissertationManualareavailableattheGraduateDivisionwebsite.TheDoctoralCommitteecertifiesthatthecompleteddissertationissatisfactorythroughthesignaturesofallCommitteemembersonthesignaturepageofthecompleteddissertation.Thedoctoralcommitteechairisresponsibleforthecontentandfinalpresentationofthemanuscript.

FilinginstructionsarefoundintheUCMThesisandDissertationManual.Theadvanceddegreemanuscriptisexpectedtobesubmittedbythedeadlineinthesemesterinwhichthedegreeistobeconferred.Theendofthesemesteristhedeadlineforsubmittingdissertationsduringeachsemester.Thosestudentswhocompleterequirementsandsubmitdissertationsaftertheendofthesemesterandpriortothestartofthesubsequentsemesterwillearnadegreeforthefollowingsemester,butwillnotberequiredtopayfeesforthatsemester.InaccordancewithUCandUCMpolicy,allapprovedthesis/dissertationmanuscriptsautomaticallybecomeavailableforpublicaccessandcirculationaspartoftheUCLibrariescollections.

c. Dissertation

Theresearchconductedbythestudentmustbeofsuchcharacterastoshowabilitytopursueindependentresearch.Thedissertationreportsascholarlypieceofworkofpublishablequalitythatsolvesasignificantscientificprobleminthefieldandiscarriedoutunderthesupervisionofamemberoftheprogramwhilethestudentisenrolledintheprogram.Thechairofthedoctoralcommitteemustbeamemberoftheprogramandmustbeimmediatelyinvolvedwiththeplanningandexecutionoftheexperimentalworkdoneto

formulatethedissertation.

Studentsshouldmeetregularlywiththeirdissertationcommittee.Thedissertationmustbesubmittedtoeachmemberofthedissertationcommitteeatleastonemonthbeforethestudentexpectstomakethedefense.Informingcommitteemembersofprogressaswritingproceedshelpsthememberstoplantoreadthedissertationandprovidefeedback.ThedissertationmustbeapprovedandsignedbythedissertationcommitteebeforeitissubmittedtoGraduateDivisionforfinalapproval.

A. Introduction

1) Aimsand Scope: Sociologyisthescientificstudyofsociety,socialinstitutions,socialrelationships,andhumanorganization.TheSociologyfacultyatUCMercedmakeupavibrantandcollegialintellectualcommunity,markedbyoutstandingscholarshipandparticipationininterdisciplinarycommunitiesofinquiry.Ourprogramfostersscholarly excellenceinSociology,withaspecificfocusonsocialinequality,organizationsandinstitutions, andpolitics.Ourprogramisnationallyandinternationallyrecognizedforits highqualityscholarship,graduatetraining,andcontributionstotheuniversityandcommunity. Studentsaretaughtstate‐of‐the‐artresearchdesignmethodsandconceptualmodelsfor carryingoutindependentresearch.Thefull‐timeprogramleadstothedegreeofDoctorof PhilosophyinSociology.Ph.D.studentshavetheoptiontoobtainaMasterofArtsin Sociologydegree,eitherenroutetoaPh.D.degree(non‐terminal),orinlieuofaPh.D.degree (terminal)ifastudentexitsthegraduateprogrampriortofulfillingthePh.D.requirements.Theprogram'soverarchinggoalistoconvertstudentsfromconsumersofsociologicalknowledgetoindependent,expertproducersofsocialresearch.TheUCMercedgraduateprograminSociologyisdistinctiveinseveralways.First,itprovidesintensivementoringtograduatestudents,withpersonalizedattentiongiventosmallcohortsofacceptedstudents.Studentsarematchedwithafacultymentorimmediatelyuponentranceintotheprogram,andtheprogramcurriculumincludessmallseminarsaswellasanintensivewritingcoursetofacilitateindependentresearchandthepreparationofjournalarticles.Second,ourprogramoffersauniquesetofsubstantivefociwithinaninterdisciplinaryenvironment.Sociologyfacultystudyacombinationoftopics,suchasrace,healthcareandeducationthatareespeciallyrelevanttoCalifornia'sCentralValley,thestateandthenation.Ourprogramincludesopportunitiestoparticipateininterdisciplinaryresearchprojects,aswellasinformalandformalseminarsfromacrosstheuniversity.Finally,theprogramisdesignedtotrainstudentsinresearchcareersinbothhighereducationandpublicandprivateagenciesoutsideofacademia.TheAmericanSociologicalAssociation(ASA)faultsgraduateprogramsinsociologyforfailingtopreparestudentsforcareersoutsideofacademia.Ourprogramprovidestrainingonarangeofsubstantivetopicsandresearchmethodologiesthatwillprovideanexcellentfoundationforcareersinacademiaandasresearchers.

2) AdmissionsRequirements:

Consideration for graduate group admission requires a bachelor’s degree, three lettersofrecommendation,officialtranscripts,GREscores,TOEFLorIELTSscore(ifapplicable)andsubmissionofthegraduateonlineapplicationwithfeebythestatedadmissiondeadline. A minimumGPAof3.0isrequired. Admissiondecisionsaremadeonacase‐bycasebasis. Meeting someorallofthesecriteriadoesnotguaranteeadmission,butmerelyeligibility.Thedecisionto recommendadmissiontotheViceProvostandDeanofGraduateEducationwillbemadebythe GraduateGroupAdmissionsCommitteeonthebasisofavailablespaceandthecompetitivenessof applicantscomparedtotheeligiblepool.

b) Deficiencies:Courseworkdeficienciesshouldbemadeupbytheendofthefirstacademicyearfollowinginitialenrollmentbyearningalettergradeof“B”orbetter.

3) GeneralCommittees:

a) ExecutiveCommittee:

TheExecutiveCommitteeshall,inconsultationwiththefaculty,determineandimplementpolicyfortheGroup.TheExecutiveCommitteeshallconsistofthree members(theGraduateGroupChairplustwomembers,appointedbytheGradGroupChairinconsultationwiththefaculty).TheExecutiveCommitteemakesappointmentstotheAdmissionsCommitteeandEducationPolicyCommitteefortheGradGroup.

b) AdmissionCommittee:TheAdmissionsCommitteeismadeupofthreefacultymembers,atleastoneofwhomisamemberoftheExecutiveCommittee(Chair),andwhoappointstwoadditionalmembers,inconsultationwiththeExecutiveCommittee.TheAdmissionsCommitteedeterminescriteriaforassessingstudentapplicants,includingdevelopingarubricforscoring(excellent,verygood,good,fair,poor,basedoninformationprovidedtousontheonlineadmissionstool,whichincludesbutisnotlimitedtoundergradcollegeandgpa,gradcollege(MA)andgpa,interests,fit,andfacultymentioned).TheAdmissionsCommitteemeetsatleastoncetorankstudentsandmakesrecommendationstofaculty;finalselectionismadebyAdmissionsCommitteeinconsultationwithfaculty.TheAdmissionsCommitteeisresponsibleforsendingthefinallistofrecommendedadmitstotheDeanofGraduateStudiesandisalsochargedwiththerecommendations/allocationofintramuralfinancialassistance,fellowships,andawardsfor newandcontinuingstudents.

c. Dissertation

Theresearchconductedbythestudentmustbeofsuchcharacterastoshowabilitytopursueindependentresearch.Thedissertationreportsascholarlypieceofworkofpublishablequalitythatsolvesasignificantscientificprobleminthefieldandiscarriedoutunderthesupervisionofamemberoftheprogramwhilethestudentisenrolledintheprogram.Thechairofthedoctoralcommitteemustbeamemberoftheprogramandmustbeimmediatelyinvolvedwiththeplanningandexecutionoftheexperimentalworkdonetoformulatethedissertation.

Studentsshouldmeetregularlywiththeirdissertationcommittee.Thedissertationmustbesubmittedtoeachmemberofthedissertationcommitteeatleastonemonthbeforethestudentexpectstomakethedefense.Informingcommitteemembersofprogressaswritingproceedshelpsthememberstoplantoreadthedissertationandprovidefeedback.ThedissertationmustbeapprovedandsignedbythedissertationcommitteebeforeitissubmittedtoGraduateDivisionforfinalapproval.
