This poem is about finding someone to spend your life with. No one wants to die

VOLKSVERHAAL: Gaïerodien

The wazir had 2 sons. The eldest was Gaïerodien, He wasn’t afraid/scared of
anyone or any animal. The wazir decided to help his son and gave him money to go
explore the world, but he has to make sure that he hears from him after 3 years.
He then went on to find something to scare him, and didn’t find anything or anyone.
He met two men and asked them where he can find something or something that he
will be afraid of.
He needed to go down a gallow where he will find bodies of two men who were
hung, and bury them. He did it, and slept in the gallow that night.
He met the same men, and they told him to go and live in the sultan’s house. They
warned him that no one has ever made it through more than one night in this
haunted palace. He said that he will do it, so they instructed him to clean the house.
If he could stay there, he can marry the sultan’s daughter.
The first night in the palace two big black cats came into the room. He saw it as a
good sign and gave them some of his curry and roti. It seemed as if the cats were
two guards. Suddenly Gaïerodien saw someone standing in front of the fire. The
cat’s hair stood up the cats back while the fire shines through the man’s body.
The stranger asked Gaïerodien if he wanted to play cards. They played cards, and
Gaïerodien won nine times. The stranger said they must play one more game, If
Gaïerodien wins he must give him everything that he owns but if he loses he must
give him his life.
Gaïerodien lost! He grabbed Gaierodien. The cats jumped onto the stranger
scratching him until he left Gaierodien. Gaierodien was upset, because he doesn’t
think that anything will scare him.

The third night the stranger came again. Gaierodien asked the stranger who he
really was. He replied that he the evil spirit of the palace. He said anyone who wants
to live there must give him their life. He threw Gaierodien in a cellar, he told him to
pick up a horseshoe. Gaierodien didn’t. The two cats jumped on the stranger and
said they are going to help Gaierodien because he helped them. They forced the
stranger to give them the keys of the palace and made him promise to never haunt
the palace again.
Gaierodien asked the cats how he helped them. They said the two men that he
buried…they were the two men, and he freed their souls.
He can now marry the sultan’s daughter. He had one problem. That there was still
nothing that scared him. The cats said they will make a plan.
The sultan introduced his daughter to Gaierodien. Shortly after they got married.
The cats told his wife that she must make as if she wants to burn his hand with a
candle. He then pulled away his hand. She asked why he did it, and he replied that
he is scared that she will burn him. So, he eventually got a fright.
