principal’s report
Welcome back to Term 3 – I may be imagining it but I am sure the days are
getting longer and spring could be just around the corner. I hope everyone
had a restful and enjoyable school holiday period. I would like to thank
parents for their patience whilst we changed software for student reports.
The new software created some challenges in printing that caused delays in
reports being distributed, especially for years 7, 8 and 9.
Goulburn High staff started the term with part of their training in the ‗No
Gap, No Excuse‘ program. This is a five module course that aims to close the
gap in the school performance of Aboriginal students compared to non-Aboriginal students through
staff training and school programs and processes. Whilst this course is specific to the needs of Aborigi-
nal students, much of what is learned and developed will assist lower performing students from a varie-
ty of backgrounds. The training will continue at various times over the next 6 – 9 months. Our first
week back also saw our celebrations of NAIDOC week with a flag raising ceremony, display of Abo-
riginal art produced by our students and lunch consisting of gourmet kangaroo burgers. Many thanks to
the efforts of Mr Boyd, Mr Mani and Ms Whiley in organising these events and the effort put in by our
dedicated team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.
Congratulations to Emmot Falconer and Ryan Haynes who represented the school in the State Cross
Country carnival. The boys did a great job finishing 57th and 60th in the state for their age division. By
the time this newsletter is printed, our representatives to the Regional Athletics Carnival would have
competed. Good luck and do your best to all those participating. Tianna Saxby continues to go from
strength to strength in squash, being picked for the state team to compete later this term – well done
Tianna! Mark Gibson is also performing brilliantly in cycling, recently coming fifth in an event even
though he was competing in an older age division.
Year 12 students will be sitting their trial HSC exams in week 4 – I would like to encourage them to
study hard and aim high. We expect our students to do their best and to focus on their goals. The best
revision students can do is to attempt past HSC questions and ask their teachers for feedback on ques-
tions they have attempted. This is an opportunity to remind students and parents of our excellent home-
work centre that runs every Monday afternoon from 3.30pm – 5.00pm in our library.
On the 15th of August, the subject selection information evening for year 8 (from 5.30 – 6.30pm) and
year 10 (7.00 – 8.30pm) will take place in the school hall. I would urge all parents of students in those
years to attend as it is a great opportunity to ask questions about the suitability of subjects and patterns
of study for their child.
A reminder that the school‘s P and C Association meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the
staff common room at 7.00pm. I would love to see more parents attend these meetings and be involved
in the decision making process that helps shape our school and your child‘s future.
Finally, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Mr Jack Plews OAM, who
passed away over the July holidays. Mr Plews was a former student, teacher, head teacher, deputy prin-
cipal and principal of Goulburn High School. Over this time period, he touched the lives of thousands
of teachers, students and their families and made a very significant and long-lasting contribution to our
school.

GOULBURN HOMEWORK CENTRE
The Australian National University students tutoring at the
Goulburn High Homework Centre
In Term 2, Goulburn High School welcomed several ANU students to four of their homework
centre sessions. ANU students assisted Goulburn High students in various subjects including
Physics, English, Drama and Mathematics, and also assisted year 9 and 10 students prepare for
their term two exams. The Goulburn High students who attended the homework centre were able
to talk to the ANU students about university and career options, and how topics they are studying
now will benefit them in their future studies.
Due to the success last term, ANU students will be returning as tutors in term
3 at the Goulburn High Homework Centre on a fortnightly basis. They began
on 23 July, and will be there on 6 and 20 August, 3 and 17 September from
3:30-5.00pm. ANU Students participating as tutors come from a diverse range
of degree disciplines, including Law, Science, History, English, Arts and Chi-
nese language. Some of the students are from regional and rural centres in NSW and others have
come from overseas to study.
If you would like assistance with your homework or assignments or a chance to talk about univer-
sity and career options, please come to one of the above sessions on Monday afternoons in the
library. There is no cost to participate. We look forward to seeing you there!
Hooked on Science Hooked on Science is a program run by the Australian
Academy of Science (ANU) to inspire young Australi-
ans to get involved in science. 120 students from 12
Canberra and surrounding schools travelled to the Shine
Dome to listen to Professor Elizabeth Blackburn (Nobel
Laureate 2009), Dr Andy Hogg (Theoretical Oceanog-
rapher) and Dr Michelle Coote (Molecular Chemist).
Each expert in their field spoke about how they got involved in
science and what they love the most about their job. They also
spoke about their current research and how the knowledge they
are gaining can help society. All students were excellent and a
great time was had by all.
Katherine Hyland (HT Science)
Year 7 students are getting into the swing of the Olympics.
They have been studying the history of the Olympic Games
and some students have received medals for their efforts.
And the winners are: Hollyanne Dawes, Tehlea Williams
and Clohe Swift.
Don‘t forget to place your Earn and Learn stickers and sheets in the boxes in M block (near
the photocopy room). Thank you to students and families - we appreciate your support!
Save The Bilby Fund Competition
2012
Bilbies were common in many different habitats throughout Australia until European settlement.
Predation by European red foxes and feral cats has meant that bilby populations now only occur in
the isolated arid and semi-arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. Save
the Bilby Fund was co-founded by conservationists Frank Manthey
and Peter McRae to raise money to help stop the steady decline of
the wild bilby population.
Students across all years in science will be participating in this free
competition by completing a cross-word that will help to save the
bilby and other endangered Australian species. Students will need to
complete their entry forms by Monday 20th August and hand it back
to Miss Bailey in the Science staffroom for their chance to win a visit from a live bilby and hundreds
of other fantastic prizes.
PBS at GHS PBS (Positive Behaviour for Success) continues to be an important focus for
Goulburn High. Students are acknowledged for their consistent demonstra-
tion of the school values: Aiming High, Being Considerate, Being Positive,
Being Responsible, and Respecting Yourself, Others and the Environment.
The photos show students who were recently acknowledged for their sus-
tained efforts in keeping our playground tidy and for 100% Attendance.
Students have also participated in discussions during roll call, considering
what the values mean and what they look like as we interact with others.

Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome back to Term 3.
We have "hit the ground running" at the start of this term with many fantastic
activities planned, enabling students to enrich their learning experiences and
access the great opportunities the school can offer: the Korean exchange
program is a great example.
Year 12 are very close to the completion of 13 years of schooling; BUT, they
have much to do in these first weeks with their Trial HSC Examinations star-
ting in Week 4. We expect them to have already begun studying hard and our
expectations are HIGH for each and every one of them.
Year 11 conclude their Preliminary course work this term with final exam weeks towards the end of this
term. They also need to work hard to ensure that they begin their HSC courses next term with a solid
foundation of knowledge and skills.
More generally, it is vitally important that all students read the teacher comments on their Half Yearly Re-
ports carefully and act upon this valuable advice to maximise their effort, focus and application during
terms 3 and 4 to show improvement at the end of this year..
Thank you to all students (and their parents) who make an effort to be consistent in wearing complete
school uniform. Our school community has mandated a school uniform so all students must make every
attempt to be in full uniform, each and every day. With the cold weather upon us, if a student is unable to
wear the correct school jacket, the wearing of a brightly coloured jacket and/or jacket with a logo is unac-
ceptable. If a student is unable to wear correct uniform on any day, a note should be provided from home,
clearly indicating what the problem is and when the problem will be fixed. Show pride in your school by
the way you dress. Impress the community by your high standards of personal presentation.
Year 8 and 10 students will be making subject selection choices later in the term. Parents should discuss
with their children appropriate and enjoyable subjects that can be chosen in conjunction with core sub-
jects. Students MUST make realistic choices to ensure future success. Remember, choices must be your
own and not based on what your friends may be choosing and/or what teacher you may think will be
teaching the course. Students should also ensure that they cover a broad range of subjects to maximise
future opportunities and remember that a change of course may NOT be possible in the future. A parent
and student information evening will be held on Wednesday 15th August in the school hall; Year 8, 5:30 –
6:30 pm; Year 10, 7 – 8:30 pm. Your attendance at these meetings is highly recommended to receive the
most up-to-date information and for you to take the opportunity to talk with teaching staff here at Goul-
burn High.
Best wishes for the term.
Mr Allan Wybrow
Deputy Principal
Year 12 Hospitality have been enjoy-ing showing the culmination of skills they have learnt as they created their very own Black Forest Cakes. Pictures of cakes created by Luke Charnock, Amy Hayward and Travis Stockton.
August will see us induct our leaders for our school‘s 100th Year. We look forward to writing
another page of GHS history. Members of the P&C are supporting the school‘s 100 Year Cel-
ebrations. The Celebration Dinner on the 29th September is attracting keen interest from gen-
erations of ex-students and teachers of our past. It will be a great occasion indeed.
One of our past teachers, Mr Jack Plews, sadly passed away recently. He had been Dux of
GHS in 1940, and after attending university and serving in the war, he returned to begin his
teaching career at GHS. He taught for 37 years without a day‘s leave of absence!
We thank the teachers involved in the Homework Centre which runs each Monday afternoon.
Afternoon tea is provided for the students, and then help is provided for homework and as-
signments where students may need some assistance.
We also thank staff who organise the free breakfast at school Monday to Thursday. Students
can have breakfast with their friends and I‘ve been told they have pancakes! How good is
that? Thank you to all the families who have sent in their Woolworth shopper stickers. We
had a very good response and hope to benefit well from this promotion. We will keep you
posted.
Our school hall is one of our priorities and we are endeavouring to attract funding to upgrade
its facilities. This is a huge undertaking, but we have some keen involvement in the school
community which will work to achieve this end. Any parent involvement is much valued, so
if you can help, please join us.
We simply could not compete with the State of Origin Rugby League last month. Our meeting
could not go ahead due to too few parents in attendance. We look forward to parents taking
advantage of the information reported by our Principal, Mr Joseph at our next meeting. It is an
excellent way to keep abreast of developments in the school in a warm and friendly atmos-
phere, so please come along.

SPORT REPORT
Term 3 will again be a busy one for sport at GHS.
During year sport, students will be attending the basketball stadium. For just $4 students will be guaran-
teed quality courts and a warm environment to play a variety of indoor sports. Students are reminded to
bring $4 every sport lesson as well as PE gear to ensure they are taking full advantage of this opportunity.
Emmott Falconer and Ryan Haynes capped off the Cross Country season with outstanding runs at the State
Carnival. Emmott finished 57th and Ryan 60th out of approximately 95 starters. Congratulations to these
boys for excellent performances against the state‘s best runners.
At GHS we are very proud of the diverse and numerous range of sports that we have athletes competing in.
In squash, Tiana Saxby recently made both the NSW State and NSW Combined High Schools sides. The-
se selections came as a result of excellent performances for the South Coast side and a 2nd place at NSW
Junior Age Titles. Congratulations, Tiana, and good luck at the next level.
Every few years we have a GHS team who excels and finishes in the top few schools in the state. This year
our Lawn Bowls team consisting of Ellyn Ryan, Andrew Caldow and Tracey-Lee Swift came 5th in the
state. Unfortunately they dropped a rare game in the semi-finals of the state competition, because they
were probably the 2nd best team at the Finals competition. Congratulations to these students on a memora-
ble result for GHS.
Fantastic news for one of our PBS Ambassadors
Former student Naomi Evans was selected for the National Jun-
ior Squad in Women‘s Hockey last week. Congratulations to
Naomi who is a true role model for our PBS program. Naomi is
one of 25 young Australian women to be selected to play at the
Junior World Cup Qualifier in 2013 in Canada.

YEAR 7 TRIP TO THE ZOO On the 15th of June, 53 Year 7 students visited Canberra‘s National Zoo and Aquarium.
This excursion was undertaken as part of the ―Trip to the Zoo‖ topic students had been
studying in Science throughout term 2. Part of this topic involved learning about adap-
tations – the special features that help plants and animals to survive in their natural en-
vironment. During our visit we were fortunate to have the chance to closely examine
the adaptations of many animals. For example, we learnt that boa constrictors like to
climb as high in a tree as possible. Many of our students were given the opportunity to
impersonate a tree. Lloyd Warren was particularly brave and didn‘t seem fussed at all at
having a boa constrictor draped over his shoulders. He was much braver than the staff
members present, especially Jacqui Porter, who wanted nothing to do with this three
metre long python.

Refugee Week Celebrations
From the 17th and 23rd of June, Goulburn High School celebrated Refugee Week. The theme of this year‘s
celebrations was ―Restoring Hope‖.
At GHS, we have approximately 20 students who come from a refugee background. Their dedication to their
study and their unshakable determination to learn a new language and a new culture is truly admirable.
To celebrate Refugee Week, we hosted a short film festival and cooked a lunchtime barbecue. The aim of
these activities was to raise money so our school could make a donation to UNHCR, the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. All of our refugee students have directly benefited from the work of UNHCR,
and we all agreed that it would be a good thing to give something back, to help restore hope for others who
are still living in refugee situations around the world. We raised about $200 in total.
A big thank you must go to Gail and Ann in the canteen. Their support and generosity made it possible to
host such a successful barbecue. We would also like to thank the GHS school community for their support.
