God is greater than our hearts!

1 John 3:20

19th April 2015

If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

1 John 3:20

GuiltGood or Bad?

My story

Kite war

Guilt is a lethal weapon

The origin of guilt Romans 2:12-16

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who

sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the

law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will

be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by

nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though

they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are

written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their

thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus

Christ, as my gospel declares.

Conscience (moral compass)Romans 2:12-16

Created by God

Existed in all Human Beings

Existed for a Purpose

How does one develop a guilt feeling?

Guilt unsettles our emotions

For this is how we know we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence whenever our hearts

condemn us.

1 John 3:19-20a

John’s discovery

1 John 3:18-19

This is the only way we’ll know we’re living truly, living in God’s reality. It’s also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it.

The Message version

A peek into Paul’s life

• Paul had missteps and felt condemned (Rom 7:18b-24a)

Paul’s Discovery

• Salvation in Christ (Rom 7:24b-25)

• There is no more condemnation in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1)

Who shall condemn us if God doesn’t?

The point is..

What “God is greater than our hearts” is NOT

A stepping stone to confidence

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and we receive anything we ask,

because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.
